Root Cyanogenmod 7.1 questions

Myarse

Newbie
Hi all.
Looking for a bit of help.

I'm currently running my first new rom (Insertcoin) which I flashed with the help of this forum, but now I fancy a change and am looking at CM7.

My questions are:
1, I currently have a 1gb ext4 partition will this be a problem with the new rom?
2, Looking at the CM7 wiki it says I need to flash the latest radio...my current radio is 5.11.05.27 is this new enough?? Don't feel confident enough to start flashing radios
3,How hard is it to add apps2ext (to make use of my ext4 partition)
4, Am I right in thinking that I need to make a Nandroid, flash/wipe and then go for the install?

Sorry for the list, been a while since my first rom flashing and am getting a bit nervous again :D

Thanks in advance.

1, No
2, Don't unless you know what you're doing.
3, not sure.
4, yes, always Nandroid.

2, No need. Yours is fine
3, easy. You can flash one of the a2sd+ options from the CM thread, or download simple2ext (s2e) from the market

hi.
cm7 rocks! :-D
I don't have a gparted sd card yet and it runs with no issues for me.
just nandroid, wipe fully and then flash it.
remember to flash the extra Google apps too otherwise no market!
I got stuck on the above until someone told me :-D
enjoy

cheers
dan

Sorry :p a few more questions:

1, To flash CM7.1 do I need to be S-OFF?
2, Where can I find the right Gapps for 7.1
3, Can I flash CM7 with my stock HBOOT or do I need CM7 HBOOT?

Sorry for being a pain, just want to make sure I don't screw up, better to ask first rather than going at it like a bull in a china shop and giving you guys the aggro of helping sort out my phone if I balls it up!

Thanks again.

Wow - snap. Currently running Insertcoin, 1gb ext4 partition and then tried to flash CM7 yesterday. It didn't go well though, so ended up using my nandroid backup to return to Insertcoin.

I've got the stock hboot version of Insertcoin - wanted to minimise the messing about with flashing different things until I felt more comfortable/ confident. This version allows you to use the ext4 partition to load up on apps - so guess what I did!

Now on to the CM7 flash. Didn't change the hboot or radio - just wanted a look to see if it was worth it before doing any more. I flashed the google apps package at the same time as per instructions.

During the set up procedure, it asks if you want to download your apps from the Market - with an option to skip until you get wifi. Like a fool, I clicked the bit to go ahead and download, thinking it was just the google apps that were coming - but no - it was every app I had downloaded for Insertcoin! Had to quickly jump on the wifi setting and get connected as loads of downloads started happening. This filled up the internal memory in no time so the downloads started to fail and got loads of error messages.

Once that was over, I thought right, need to get the apps to SD bit done. Tried flashing the darktremors script, but this didn't seem to help any. As I restored apps from TI, the internal memory was going down quite quickly, though using Quick System Info I could see that some space was being used on the ext4 partition so it was working, but the majority of the apps size seemed to be staying on internal? Maybe the Insertcoin version of apps2sd moves more? Tried uninstalling apps and rebooting a few times then restoring apps through TI to see if this changed anything - but it didn't seem to.

Did a bit of searching on the forums, and saw the reference to simple2exe (s2e). Tried that, but I think I did something wrong here. I ticked all the options to move apps, but didn’t tick the import from darktremor – wasn’t sure what this did. Re-booted the phone, but then it got stuck with the splash screen for about an hour. Ended up pulling the battery and restoring the nandroid backup of Insertcoin through recovery – now back to exactly where I was before I started flashing. Really glad I had done that backup! Not sure if I had left it, it would have gone through, but I think it was stuck in a bootloop.

I’ll probably give it another go next weekend – but remember not to restore apps from Google, make sure the nandroid backup is up to date and read a bit more on the apps 2 sd.

Cheers Coos Lick,

Can I ask are you S-OFF? I've read conflicting versions saying you need to be and others saying you don't!

The CM Wiki says S-OFF so I guess that's the way to go

Thanks all, you are all stars! :D

Right that's settled then, gonna flash the rom later (gotta go back to work first )

Hopefully I won't be back on here crying later, instead I'll be playing with my nice shiny new rom

a2sd+ shouldn't be a problem. Install the a2sd tool (simple2ext, DarkTremor, whatever) before you restore your apps. If you are short of space (e.g. using standard hboot) then set the option to move the dalvik cache to ext before restoring. With DarkTremor that's done using a terminal and typing:

su
a2sd cachesd

I've never used simple2ext so don't know for that, but it has a gui so shouldn't be too hard to set up. If in doubt, restore a few apps first and see how it is working, then use a batch operation for the rest.

I don't trust simple2ext.

I.don't.trust anything that sits where its moving things to. Don't know why

Was running CM7 but couldn't seem to get the apps2sd side of things sorted (just me being a noob :p)

So flashed Oxygen instead, running smoothly and am now making use of my partition again!

Once again, thanks all! your help is appreciated.
