Cyanogenmod?

I'm finally ready to give cyanogenmod a go (my first time using custom ROM), but I'm curious as to how stable it is with the boost mobile s2? The only file I find on the official website is the nightly version and it says it's unstable. Can anyone throw me a couple of tips?
Thanks in advance.

I am a longtime soft moder. Welcome to your new obsession. I strongly recommend not starting with an experimental build. Use the stable version. You should not have to debug an alpha build.

Install ROM Manager and Goo Manager they help at downloading the most up to date stable build for your device.

Thank you. I'll go download those now. I'm surfing the web trying to find some info on the installation. I saw a video that said I need ICS to install, but I'm on Jellybean and rooted. I'm just hoping this doesn't prove to be a big pain lol.

I suggest checking here for CM and other AOSP builds

Although Rom Manager is a nice app. I do not recommend it for this phone. Custom recovery (CWM) is tied to the kernel on this device, and so changing the kernel affects it.

AOSP ROMs (CM is one of these) were developed before Touch Wiz JB arrived, and so are not compatible with the Touch Wiz JB modem (baseband). For AOSP ROMs to work you must use and ICS modem..

You should be able to flash the correct modem while you are in recovety following the instructions for the ROM you want. If unsure you can do a one click of ICS. Being rooted is fine. The CM you flash would be rooted anyways.

I've decided that I'm pretty much clueless about going back to ICS so I can install cyanogenmod. I found a thread on this site but it says I'll become unrooted if I install per the directions. I'd like to keep root access. Anyone know how to do this?

So I'm ready to install cyanogenmod now, except I've not went from jellybean back to ICS yet and I understand I have to have ICS for the custom rom process. What has me stumped is being rooted at the moment. When I go back to ICS won't I lose root access? And will I have to re-root my phone to install cyanogenmod? Thanks guys. I'm slowly learning :o

Which thread are you referring to? It isn't hard to get to where you want to be for the install of what you want. There are a bunch of us that can help you get through it.

You can get many needed files from here.

I moved your thread to your original thread to keep it all in one place ;)

Short answer, no you won't if you do a one click install of the rooted version of ICS. This will accomplish two needed things. First it will give you the ICS modem you need for AOSP/AOKP ROMs, and second it will reformat the phones partitions as Touch Wiz JB has the /preload partition in there taking up space.

All you need is your pc with the Samsung drivers, the one click install of the Rooted ICS (available from the repository)

, along with your phone (in download mode) and its usb cable.

After that you will need to use Odin or mobile Odin to flash in the recovery kernel that the CM ROMs instructions tell you to use for installing the ROM.

I'm not even sure which place I saw the unrooting thing. I read so many last night... I'm going right now to look at the link you gave me.
I know it can't be as hard as I've made it haha. And thank you very much for info. You guys are terrific. Someone always has an answer for me on this site. =)

I found the rooted .tar immediately. THANKS!!!!! I guess I was overly tired last night from working a million hours. I'm in the process of downloading right now. I'll let y'all know how everything goes.

No problem. If you are confused on the one click install just let us know and we can give you the steps to do it. The file downloaded is a self extracting archive and will create a folder with the installer inside it. Copy any pictures and stuff to your pc or external SD card before doing a restore install.

Okay with the .tar file you will need to use Odin to install it, ad the file would go in the pda slot.

Note: Mobile Odin has problems with flashing modems so don't use that to do it.

You're a step ahead of me. I was just about to ask if I needed to drop that in the PDA slot. I've got Mobile Odin but never used it and wasn't about to try for this. My pc version is simple and to the point. I did a backup of all my pictures and stuff last night, so I'm good to go. I'll know if it works in about 5 minutes :)

I just noticed I have two versions of Odin- 1.85 and 3.07. Can't remember why, but is there any reason I should use one over the other?

WooHoo!!! Android 4.0.4 is live! NOW, on to cyanogenmod. I've got my fingers crossed that I have less trouble with that than previously.

Okay now follow the ROMs thread instructions. It should tell you which recovery to use (usually el26 or EL29). You will need to use Odin and flash in that kernel then boot right into its CWM recovery.

Again download all files you need to the phone (ROM, Gapps etc) before you start the process.
