Cyanogenmod?

Hello everyone, after much googleing and youtube I couldn't seem to find the instructions I needed to install CM 10.1 on my s2. A lot of the stuff I read seemed geared to the Sprint version. Which is virtually the same I suppose. I decided to seek help as I tried installing the official nightlies using the instructions on the official cyanogenmod page but ended up bricking my phone and had to reinstall the stock 4.1.2 JB ROM.

I've never installed custom stuff on my phone before, I'm new to this. As of now I'm on stock 4.1.2 non-rooted. So how do I get CM 10.1 on my phone?

If you are wanting to run CM 10.1 you will be running the one for the Sprint version. There is no real issue with doing that as Boost is on the Sprint network. Our phone is the exact same thing as the Epic 4G Touch, and that is the section you go to on XDA when looking for ROMs for this phone. With this phone our recovery is tied to the kernel so when the kernel is changed, the Recovery changes, and this makes it important to follow directions in the OP for the ROM exactly.

Here is the link to the Android Original Development section on XDA, where you will fine posts for the ROMs you are looking for.

Epic 4G Touch Original Development - xda-developers

Do note that nightly builds aren't always the most stable and are still early in development. Take your time and read the OP and note down bugs and issues others may have, then decide if that ROM is for you.

I've read all of this thread:

[ROM][SPH-D710][JB][4.2.2] CyanogenMod 10.1 Official Nightly Builds

It says that you shouldnt be on a JB modem, im on stock 4.1.2 so I'm assuming I'm using a JB modem? How do I go back to ICS?

I understand that nightlies have bugs and whatnot but its the ROM I've decided on. I just need instructions on how to install it, im afraid of following the instructions on the cyanogenmod page again as I tried and it meessed up my phone.

You follow the instructions in that post. you need to flash an ICS modem, and use the correct recovery kernel (usually EL26) And have all the files set to go before flashing that kernel as it will not run JB and is only used for the recovery packaged with it.

I'm going to use the file SPH-D710BST_FI22_Rooted_Restore.exe in the link you provided earlier in the thread, Rwilco12 Android Repository, to get the ICS modem. As I dont see instructions for doing that in the XDA thread. Would that be fine?

Well I successfully went back to ICS. I'm going to try the instructions on the cyanogenmod site again to get to CM 10.1 and see how it goes this time around.

Okay well Im stuck on this part from the WiKi:

  1. Place dastin1015's ClockworkMod Recovery file into the Heimdall directory.
  2. On the computer, open a terminal and run the following command from the Heimdall directory: heimdall flash --kernel zImage --no-reboot Tip: It may be necessary to run the command as root in Linux distributions, ie "sudo heimdall [...]". If a blue bar doesn't show up after the process has finished or this appears: "Failed to confirm end of file transfer sequence!", it may be a symptom. Tip: it may be necessary to capitalize the name of the partition on some devices... ie --KERNEL instead of --kernel, or --recovery instead of --RECOVERY Tip: protocol initialization can (does?) fail if the device is connected via a USB hub - connect directly to the PC Tip: If on Linux 64bit you get "unable to execute ./heimdall: No such file or directory" - try the 32bit version and make sure to run it with sudo. Tip: On Mac OS X you may see this message: "ERROR: Claiming interface failed!", if so, you need to disable the default USB drivers with the following commands:
    sudo kextunload -b com.apple.driver.AppleUSBCDC;
    sudo kextunload -b com.apple.driver.AppleUSBCDCACMControl;
    sudo kextunload -b com.apple.driver.AppleUSBCDCACMData;

    In the command line I get an error sayin that "zImage" cant be found. I put the ClockworkMod Recovery file named "StockCWM-EL26.tar.MD5" in the Heimdall folder.

Well I bricked my phone again following the instructions on the cyanogenmod page, really unfriendly for someone new at this. Wonder if there are better instructions somewhere else.

What exactly am I suppose to do with the StockCWM-EL26.tar.MD5 file? the only way I can extract it and get the zImage is if I get rid of the MD5 extension at the end.

You dont extract the el26 file. You flash it in with odin then boot into its recovery. You then use that recovery to flash the ROM. You also don't change the name, leave it as it is, including the MD5

When I follow this step:

I get an error say the "zImage" file cant be found. Even after I've put the el26 file in the heimdall directory like the instructions state.

Just Stop! First close what ever terminal you are opening. Did you download Odin? you use that to flash the EL26 file. Get Odin, run it, in the "PDA" slot you put the EL26 file (the .tar.md5 just as you downloaded it without trying to open it or change its name). then put your phone in download mode, then connect it to the pc with the usb cable (assuming you have the Samsung usb drivers already on your pc). When you see the com port on Odin light up, hit start.

I was finally able to install the the clockworkmod recovery and install CM 10.1 :) I am trying it out and messing with the settings just to see how everything works, so far it seems pretty stable, well at least the latest nightly.

The only problems I've found so far is that MMS doesnt work and my 4G speeds are slow. Also, I no longer see the voicemail app I use to have, how does voicemail work with CM 10.1?

Thank you for your help Codegerm :)

One more question, I know they will probably release more nightly builds, is there like an app that simplifies the process of updating to the latest build?

Check the one stop shop post that is a sticky. In that you will find a link to the post to fix your MMS, the server settings have to be adjusted to the ones for Boost. 4g speeds do seem affected, but then others have said theirs were okay. For upgrading to the next released build, I usually just boot into recovery and flashed the zip, rebooted, then restored any apps I need to (not system ones or data on user ones unless i needed that data). I believe there is a VVM app you can download on XDA to give you your voicemail app back.

Okay I was able to get MMS working by flashing the zip they talk about in the thread. Now the problem is that when I send someone a picture the image looks really choppy on the persons phone, they didnt look like that when I would send them before. Is this common? When I receive pics from someone the pics look fine.

Not sure what you mean by choppy. Are you referring to reduced resolution? Check your settings. I haven't run into that issue.

I know the images get compressed when sending and quality is reduced, but the images have jaggies all over the place, not sure if you get what I mean. There is just a noticeable difference in picture quality.
