DamageControl v2.09.1

I have now successfully flashed 2.09.1. It did require me to flash it after wiping to get it installed. I was not able to wipe ext, but apparently, that didn't matter...I have not used aps2sd, so perhaps that is why?? It took a very long time after flashing to boot, maybe 10-15 minutes. Upon begining to set up my widgets and such, some of the widgets were missing, as in: they weren't available in the list to be added to the screens, but after a reboot, they were all again available...which I had read on xda. DCconfig gives you some optins to remove some of the Sprint bloatware, but I don't see how I can be selective, it look slike its all or none, unless i am missing something. No biggy, as I have the instructions for removing the few i don't want via adb, and have done that before.

That's about it for now. Fire away with questions if you want. :)

Okay Socodef and JB, I have started the process. I am using the DCupdater and it downloaded that 104mb file. I had already made two back ups of my .o8 so I started the installation on the Hero. The install process has been going 13 minutes now. I got to the Nandroid screen and started the boot process. I'm sitting on the first HTC screen and I'll update as it goes. Wish me luck.........

Lisa

Update: At 15 minutes we're at the NOW screen...........

Update: At 21 minutes it goes to the white screen with HTC Quietly Brilliant and then animate "Sprint Welcome to NOW" and appears to be looping!

Update: At 25 minutes still looping........

Lisa, did you wipe the data and dalvik? When i didn't wipe, it boot looped. I then went back, by pulling the battery and booting into recovery, then wiped, then it worked.

I ran this ROM last night through today. I reverted back to my Sprint.zip from Damageless. I had no issues getting the ROM to load, but I did have a small issue with the Sense widgets. They just would not show up. The widgets that did show up I didn't like. I was really hoping this would be the end all for me, but alas it was not. I have been flashing through a few ROM's over the last day or two and really, the "Official" minus a few pieces of bloatware is what I seem to prefer. The ROM is well made, but it's just not for me.

The widgets showed up for me after a second reboot, and have stayed thru many reboots since.
EDIT: I also have access to the "get more HTC widgets" with this ROM, that i haven't had with any of the other ROMS yet.

Well, JB at 30 minutes into the project and the last 9 minutes of looping I pulled the battery. I then restored my DC v2.08.1 and it loaded properly and apparently everything is as it was. Thank Nandroid for returning my phone to me...........

On your question did I wipe? No I did not. I knew that risk existed but some folks say it would work and other say no. Well it didn't work for me. As I stated wiping the phone and then having to go through all the resetup and all the effort to rebuild the phone the way I wanted it was not worth it to me. In Damages instructions he says it should install but he prefers a wipe of everything first. I'm glad I tried it as I would have always wondered if it would work and now I know it won't. I'm very happy with .08. I didn't know what to expect on the other side of .09 as all I have read about .09 are the problems with this or that. As I have stated numerous times, I have a perfect running phone in all respects, from bluetooth, to dialers, to no lag in my key boards, to the live wallpaper on my opening screen. The phone just works perfectly. Not knowing any advantage for going to .09 or even having anyone enumerate the differences or benefits of .09 I'm just going to stay here.

I do appreciate all your encouragement and assistance in answering my questions but it didn't work. I have about 18 months before I get an upgrade so who knows what will await us at that time. I'm just going to go back to the Hero and enjoy it knowing it's the best it gets.

Thanks again...........

Lisa ;)

I rebooted several times and they still would not show up. I did have access to the "Get more HTC Widgets" though. Strange I know, but that's how it was for me.

Lisa, I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. One more suggestion...if I may...Have you thought about trying Titanium Backup from the market? It's free for 30 days, I think. From what I have read here, it is very good and should allow you to wipe, and get alot of things setup easliy again after flashing a new ROM.

Keep in mind, that even if you do wipe, and install a new ROM, your nandroid backup will still get you back exactly as it was before, if you decide you don't like the new ROM. The wiping doesn't effect the nandroid. I was willing to try wiping and flashing 2.09.1 (rather than doing it thru the DCupdater, when that didn't work for me) becasue of this.

So far , I am liking 2.09.1 very much!

Well JB, I still have that 104meg file on my phone and I will probably revisit it when I have more time. I do have and use "My Backup Pro" and it captures everything pretty good. I also have all my contacts and stuff like that in Outlook and I sync that with Companionlink software. Of course I have pictures in some of my Android Contacts file and I am not sure I get those back with my back up program. But what you did say which was interesting that the Nandroid backup preserves "Data" and Dalvik so I can just revert to .08 if I wanted too. I could even do a full wipe, then try for a successful install of the 2.09. If I was successful with that install I could play with it and then back it up and go back to .08 and when I had more time to tweak and play with .09 go back there again. Also I could try .09 (providing the wipe is the key) and see if I notice any differences or improvements that would make it worth while to really keep it. That was one of MY original questions on this thread was "what's the difference between .08 and .09"? We have discussed just having the latest and all that but is there a real noticeable difference? What is exactly different? Besides being the latest and greatest is it really worth it if you are having absolutely NO problems with the .08?

But anyway JB you have been very kind and I appreciate your help and encouragement. I do enjoy playing with the phone and I am kind of a techie person. Plus I'm getting over the fear of bricking the phone. To see my Nandroid come back tonight was a relief but there are thousand of folks that rely on that and it works. So I can roll back and forth if I want too.

On the wiping...... When booting into Nandroid there is a line there asking if you want to wipe. I believe there is only one line there like that so does it wipe data and Dalvik at the same time? Or is there another line there deeper that will wipe Dalvik specifically? But it's good to know that I can do a wipe and still go back to my Nandroid back up.

It does make me a little nervous to be playing with a couple of hundred dollar toy and not really know what I'm doing with it. Also to have that hanging over your head that if you do something wrong it's no longer any good. So that threat is on my mind too. But I know about the warning of the radio's and I'll never go there. I'm still fighting roms..........

Thanks again for your's and everyone else's help here.........
Much appreciated..........

Lisa :)

Lisa, Like you, I was concerned about messing up my Hero, and in fact, did have an issue trying to nandroid back once. Turns out, I was out of room on the SD card. Since then, it has become easy to try new ROMS without fear. I'LL flash it, and try it for a while, without setting everything up. If I like, then I set it up, and make a nandroid.

I was happy with 2.08.1. With one exception... It didn't allow me to get the extra HTC widgets...Not that I needed them, but it indicated to me that the ROM was not based on the official Sprint 2.1. 2.09.1 DOES allow those extra widgets, because it is based on the official Sprint 2.1. That in itself, made me want to use it. Also, it is deodexed (too techincal for me, but it seems to be a good thing!) I tried several other ROMs, and each was good, but didn't have that official feel that I like. Always some little difference to remind me. With 2.09.1, all the Sprint Bloatware is there, I think, but can be removed, or left, if you want it. Not all ROMS do. Each of us has different likes and dislikes. I don't care for NFL or Nascar, but Ilike Sprint Navigation.

Good luck and Happy Flashing!

Regarding your question of wiping, yes, there are two different lines to choose, data, and dalvik.

Titanium Backup is free. There is no trial period from what I can tell. After trying out the DC ROM, I used a Nandroid for the first time and I am so glad it worked the way it was advertised so to speak. I am now much more content to flash new ROM's knowing that it is simple to go back to what you had and liked. Lisa, MyBackupPro is a good app, but I would definitely suggest checking out Titanium Backup. I believe it is a little more full featured. If I can get the Sense widgets to return to this ROM for me, I could see myself using it. Maybe I'll give it another try soon. It definitely has some potential, and I did notice it to be pretty fast.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll check out titanium backup as you can't be backed up enough in my book. I'll back up everything again and give it another try. I have a 16gig sd card so I have plenty of room.

I also gather that DC's app remove is a all or nothing thing too. But as mentioned you can use the stock app manager to remove things.

The "drodexed" thing is an interesting point. Can anyone explain more about that? The more info the better decisions we can make.

Thanks for the info......

Lisa

I rebooted several times and they still would not show up. I did have access to the "Get more HTC Widgets" though. Strange I know, but that's how it was for me.

As I mentioned, all my widgets returned, but I found this on xda regarding this issue on Damageless roms:

HTC WIDGET FIX if needed
go to settings > Mange Apps > Find Htc Sense and clear data this should fix it

First I want to say a major Thank You to the following guys that gave me some great advice:

Socodef
Mysticmead
JBinAZ
Kitsapandroid

All your adviced worked perfectly. I am running a very smooth DC 2.09.1 now!

Here's how it went, actually pretty fast and easy if you think about it. I spent three hours on it and this is what I did. Kitsapandroid recommended the Titanium Backup and I got that and made a complete back up of everything. This is really a much more comprehensive program then My Backup Pro that I have been using. Then I did another Nandroid backup of my working 2.08.1. Then I went into the DC Updater and started the program from there. Being I already had the 104 meg upgrade downloaded it went fast. When I got into the Nandroid start up I did a wipe of the data but couldn't wipe the Dalvik as it promped me to do it from adb. Didn't have my laptop so I just went for it. Five minutes later it booted up the the lock screen. I couldn't believe it! IT WORKED!!!!! After poking around in this new Hero for a little while I decided to use Titanium and do a restore of everything I backed up. Low and behold I got 95% of it back on the first try. I spent another two hours tweaking little things but everything worked form my data connect to my internet and email connections. This whole process took a total of 3 hours from start to finish and my phone looks exactly like it did before I started. Looking in the Settings> About Phone> Software Information: I have Firmware 2.1-update 1 Build Number: Damage Control v2.09.1

So I did it thanks to all your help, coaxing, and recommendations. Thank you very much and I hope this helps anyone that follows our footsteps.

Now I'm going to Nandroid backup again and start dumping the bloatware.

Thank you gentlemen.........

Lisa :D

You are very welcome! I am glad you gave it another shot, and I am glad that I coaxed you! :D

So what are the main advantages of going to .09? Seems like it's been a hassle for most people and is it really worth it??
