Help Damaged screen on Arc

Lurker
I damaged the screen on my Arc the day after I bought it my dropping it. It was a three foot drop and I guess I hit just the right spot for the glass the shatter in the top right corner. It's not affecting the use of the phone as the shattered glass doesn't even extend into the area where the time is displayed. The damaged triangle is mainly in the black area on the phone, not the actual lcd part of the display. There are no damaged pixels, no 'stains' or anything. It appears to be just the upper glass in the corner, a triangle shape, that's damaged.

The factory applied screen protector is keeping it all in and I don't really notice it when using it, when making calls sometimes I notice the edge is a little rough where the corner of shattered glass is. I'm worried that the corner will eventually 'dog-ear' and making calls will become difficult... plus.. it's damaged, I would obviously prefer to have it repaired.

I have the address and number of a Sony service centre here in Canada, what would be the approximate cost of replacing the screen. Can just the glass be replaced, will the entire display need to be replaced, can I do this myself? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi,

There should be a glass screen layer and a digitizer layer. From your description looks like the glass screen has been damaged. I guess it's the cost of replacing the glass screen.

Easiest thing would be to phone the service center and ask how much it would cost.

As for replacing it yourself, it's almost certainly possible, but it would be very, very fiddly indeed. You would have to take the entire phone to pieces, and bear in mind that the glass/digitiser is usually glued onto the case. One of the (many) steps for replacing the digitiser on the HTC hero involves putting it in an oven to soften the adhesive! There are also bits of tape and glue holding ribbon cables etc into place. A total nightmare.

Also, i wouldnt attempt it unless you had access to instructions, either in the form of a service manual (just had a search & couldnt find one), or a youtube video (can't see one of those either) or something. There is a LOT of stuff packed into a very small space on this phone, it would be very easy to damage something. The point is, unless you know what youre doing, you could bollocks up your phone.

EXACTLY! Same thing happened to me when I dropped it to a *Carper floor* from less than 150m. But what happened to me was a faint scratch on top right conrner of display. So Rogers didn't accept my phone when I returned it. But instead they sent it because its top left of screen is not secure and seems to be pulling away )even so slightly).

That was really lame, and made me worried about using it in future.

Hi, im having almost the same predicament. When I was plugging in the charger to my phone, it slipped from my finger and scratched my phone back cover. The sharp metal end of my charger has caused a deep long scratch to the cover. On another occasion, it slips and scratched the front screen of my phone. I tried various method, but am not able to remove these scratch marks. I have checked with SE service center for the cost to replace my phone cover and screen, but they could not provide then. I was advised to wait for their technical staff's call and to send in for replacement of the parts. It is rather anoying as it might take more than 2 weeks for the repair, which is also chargeable. Im having this phone for less than a week and im loving it. However, I felt that it is very fragile as compared to the x10 I previously owned.

@randyrocky: The arc comes with a screen protector already fitted (in addition to the spare in the box). It's probably this that's scratched, not the screen itself (the screen is pretty tough mineral glass, you'd really have to go some to scratch it). Peel off the protector, and fit the spare (although personally unless it's really bad i'd leave the protector on there).

Sony really should draw more attention to the fact that there's a screen protector already on the phone, it'd probably save them a lot of hassle and bad press about how easily the screen is scratched :)

As for the back cover, the arc is pretty new, so there arent many places selling spares yet, theres a place here that sells them for about 15 quid (theyre out of stock, but at least it gives you a ballpark figure for how much it'll cost):

Hi Daveybaby, thanks for the needed answer. After checking carefully, there is indeed an applied screen protector. Its confirmed that I have scratched the screen protector and slightly on the side of the plastic front cover. Im relieved to later find out that SE service center are selling black cover separately, although it is currently not in stock. Im very grateful for your advise. Indeed, SE shall indicate that there are two pieces of screen protector issued with the phone package just like the previous x10 package. ARC is a really good phone that I am glad to own one. I love most features of this phone except that it drains battery pretty fast. Cheers.

God you people are unlucky, i got mine yesterday and dropped it from about 2 meters onto floorboards and not a scratch on it that i can see. im very grateful! has anyone noticed a rough edge where the battery cover meets the silver plating when you run ur finger over the side of the arc with the headphone jack? like its not sitting on the device right? wish they made it so the back didnt open...it feels flimsy even when its connected!

Maybe that's from where you dropped it.
