Root Darktremor A2SD for Prevail [Updated 5-7-12]

So I rooted my phone last night for the first time using FA19 Gingerbread Rooted Image with CWM5 by Koumajutsu and hroark13. Then I got my phone all setup, and as I was reading further into it, I decided I wanted to use A2SD. This was the one that seemed most highly recommended, and I went ahead and attempted to install it. Problem is, when I try to move stuff onto the SD card, it seems like it's going to move, but then everything goes back the way it was, and nothing is moved. I'm wondering if the root version I'm using is compatible with Darktremor's A2SD, or if I needed to take more steps.

Because I had just finished up rooting my phone, and gotten things setup as I liked, I was hoping to avoid starting ALL over again just to get A2SD working. For reference, I quoted the exact, and only steps I took during this process on my phone that was already rooted with what I listed above. So, did I do something wrong, or is there more to it in order to actually get this working?

Install With CWM
1. Back up your entire sd card contents to a folder on your computer.
2. Place downloaded .zip on SD card
3. Turn off phone
4. Boot into recovery (hold vol up + power)

NOW'S A GOOD TIME TO MAKE ANOTHER BACKUP. OK, Let's Continue.

4. Select - Mounts and Storage > mount /system then mount /data. When done, press power button to return to main menu.
5. Select - Install zip from sdcard > Choose zip from sdcard > dt_a2sd_prevail.zip. When that finishes, press power button to return to main menu.
6. Select - Advanced > Partiton sd card > ext size (any) > swap size (0M). When finished, press power button to return to main menu.
7. Select - Reboot system now

First boot may take a few minutes while apps are moved.
To see if it worked check the a2sdGUI now in your app drawer
or open a terminal or adb shell with root privileges and type
Code:
a2sd check
You should get a status dialogue.
Thanks!

PS. I searched and searched, and after 2 hours of reading, I gave up, registered, and am posting this now.

Ok I may try that. But what if I just downgrade KoumaKernel to a version that is compatible with A2SD within CTMod 3.3? Will that work? Bc I actually like A2SD's features and functionality, plus I have gotten accustomed to the way it works considering I am usually the one messing with the settings on my gf's phone and fixing whatever goes wrong with it lol. If that will work, which version should I go with and do I just flash it over the existing kernel or do I have to go thru a complete wipe of the phone? Thanks

you should check the koumakernel thread. he keeps a changelog and all previous versions in the OP.

you don't need to "move" any apps once you flash this. they are all installed to your sdext automatically and immediately once you open the a2sdGUI and set "apps are on sd".

you can also "move and rebuild" dalvik-cache to sd to get the most internal storage savings possible with this method. again, moving apps with the Manage Applications menu or with Titanium Backup is unnecessary and redundant.

The solution to your problem can be found here: http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/522573-very-confused.html

I know this is my noobiness showing here, but I don't know if I'm understanding the steps I need to take exactly with the information you provided? Unless this is supposed to make it so I don't have to re-root? Looking through the instructions for the KoumaKernel 2.3, I would just need to run that installation on top of my already installed rooted Odin FA19 with CWM using the recovery panel, and THEN install the ROM you listed in that thread?

Or I'm wrong, and I need to re-root with the HalfAssRom and then install the KoumaKernel 2.3 using the recovery panel? Just hoping for some clarity. I'm sure once I do these things a bit more it will become much easier. I would like to root my wife's phone, but would prefer to get mine sorted first.

Thanks!

Will this wipe my current settings? Should I do a Titanium backup? I've already got the important stuff backed up on my SD card, as well as my calendar and contacts synced to my Gmail account. The apps, I'm not so concerned with since I can just download them again anyways, and I only have a few installed right now while I wait to get this sorted out.

Yes, flashing roms will wipe current settings. Its usually better to install apps fresh when updating roms, but restoring the apks with TB is usually okay. Restoring system data with titanium backup can cause issues.

And if you are using a Koumakernel-based apps to SD setup, formatting and/or partitioning will wipe the SD card, so back it up to your computer.

Ok. Well, I'm going to wait to get a larger SD card, because once I factor in music and photos, my 2GB card will be cutting it close. Not to mention not knowing what class of card it is.

Thanks for the help. I'll update when I get this done.

EDIT: I found a real cheap 8GB MicroSD card on Newegg. Only $3.99 after rebate. Thought I would share it with you guys. Rebate is only good until April 2, 2012. If it turns out to be a dud, I won't be too bent out of shape over only $4.

I found a Patriot class 10 16gb card on the same site . Bought it for 19.99 and got 10.00 rebate . It might not be the best in the world but by golly I'm happy with it .I'm getting 8-9 on write speeds 19-22 on read which is darn good . I'll probably end up getting a Sandisk class 10 16gb card when I get my new phone but this 1 works fine for now .

Nice work all around. I know this mod is sorta a thing of the past with kouma and the ssm but honestly I think every member here has ran A2SD at one time during their adventures with the prevail. I actually still have the zip on my SD card and on occasion I still use this when I revert to my CT 2 point versions. I love this app and I truly appreciate all you have done with it for our wonderful little engine that could (prevail) hats off to you and your work for all of us!!

Hmmm!
I see this thread has been updated?
What has changed with dark tremors apps to sd?
Hopefully it now supports cm 7 Because it's hard to know if s2e is doing the job.
Anyone?

I am running the CM9 KANG 3.5 alpha only because I could not get A2SD to run in CM7 either.
I have a 2gb and 8gb sdcards from 2 diff makers and have used the 8gb before in a tablet. I have formatted both to EXT4 inside CWM and in Minitool Partition Wizard. When I install CM9 I get no errors in the process.
The rom itself works fine. The App2sd gui inside it does not let me move anything to the sdcard and my internal memory has on 81 of 160mb left.

I thought I woiuld possibly get it to work by downloading the zip and installing that way. But, that brings me full circle to the reason I put the Alpha on.
I have downloaded the dt_a2sd_prevail.zip file I don't know how many times and from as many locations as I can including the link on the top of this thread. I get an error: Mount Partition: SYSTEM mount() expects 3 args, got 4 E:Error in /sdcard/dt_as2sd_preva (Status 7)
Installation aborted.

Any help would be appreciated. I spent few hours working with understanding the roms and the rest of the weekend working on getting A2SD working. I have flashed tablets several times but this is my first phone.

The gui in CM9 goes back to apps on internal storage when I try to move to the external and I cannot move Dalvik either to external

Also, and tell me if I should post this in the CM9 thread, does anyone know if the EJ06 changes after flashing CM9 because mine is still on EJ06. I saw a comment in that thread that made me believe it changes.

Thanks guys

I have to say that enabling swap on this rom is kinda cool. I gotta say my phone doesnt lagg in high cpu performance setting even though i have multiple apps running. Might wanna try it! Swapper formated the ext made a new one and enabled it... Something in the a2sd app does not work, or most likely , my noobness.. I would really like for you guys to try my little tweaked out cm9.. Its like it gives the phone a tune up... If anybody would like to try lemme know. Happy deving !

Install the cm9. Partition your card in cwm. Reboot. Try the a2sd app and let me know what happens.

Thanks for replying. I have done that a few times now and after formatting the SD creating the partition.
Funny thing is I installed apps2sd free from the market and it moves some applications that can be moved to my sd.
I have flashed CM9 after doing all wipes and same results. The sd is 8gb and I have 1gb for the ext4 partition. I can see the ext4 in Minitools and like I said I can move apps with apps2sd free so my partition is good.

i would start over bro..

copy everything to your pc then wipe your sd and start again

after formatting the SD creating the partition.

i don't know what this part means.
you don't need any other software to accomplish this. just use clockworkmod to create the partitions (1024 and 128 are suggested for cm9) and immediately boot into cm9. once booted, open the app and select 'apps on sd' and then 'move and rebuild' the dalvik allowing the phone to reboot. apps2sd from the market doesn't use the ext4 partition. it makes a folder on your vfat partition and puts parts in there.

the zip installer for dt_a2sd is broken, thanks for letting me know. i'll get it fixed.

enabling swap and changing swappiness will work straight away on cm9 without any additional apps as long as your partitions are correct. i tried to make sure all the buttons worked as intended before sending it out.

also, post your tweaked version. this is your second invitation to do so.

I just meant I even tried formatting the entire sd before creating the partition in CWM.

Ok, the installer is broken, I was hoping I was not doing something stupid with the dt_a2sd lol

But, if I am understanding everything the CM9 install should do an automatic creation of what dt_a2sd does, is that correct?
I was just trying to run it manually so I could see if it worked by itself.

Thanks for explaining the vfat partition I did not realize it worked that way.

NOW I did just as you said booted to CWM, created partition, size 1024 swap 128, rebooted to CM9, opened the app and it said apps were on internal, I clicked it and it brought up working message and went back to apps on internal, i clicked Dalvik and it said on internal, i clicked move and rebuild, it rebooted, then said Android is upgrading I think it said 61 apps, I then went into the app again, it still said on apps on internal and so does Dalvik. I went to setup and storage and it still says internal storage total space is 160mb apps 46.44 available 88.65 mb. This is what I always get

Any more idea? I hope LOL
Thanks for your time
