data limits on all networks

Hi Guys,

I hope this is the right place to do this, but i need advice on how to kerb data usage on my phone. I don't have any data package, so it's chowing me alive. I hear there's all this "automatic" stuff that happens in the back ground, but I'm not too sure how to switch it off. Also, I'm within wifi range most of the day, but it still seems to use my 3G connection.

Please help!

Try Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Network (Uncheck the box).

That should switch off the data network.

You could also switch of autosync.

Settings -> Accounts & Sync - Auto-sync (Uncheck the box).

Does that help at all?

Thanks Pres! I switched off background sync, will that do more harm than good? I went through each of the apps that sync and made them "once a day". Is this overboard? Thanks for advice, I do feel a bit thick for not working that out myself :)

Once a day is fine. I have a data plan (but I'm connected to WiFi most of the time) and I've turned autosync off altogether, it depends on how much you get charged for data and what your need for the data is when you're syncing I suppose.

Some apps need background data (the market for example), but switch it off, see if it effects the way your phone works and if any apps don't function correctly with it off.

Roughly what sort of usage were you getting per day? You can install an app called 3G Watchdog which will keep tabs on things for you too.

If you are getting charged a hefty whack, is it feasible to get a data plan?

You're right, a data plan is a good idea. Here in sunny South Africa data is expensive doesn't matter what you do...but a package definitely helps! Just gotta convince the boss its a good idea, it is a work phone :)

Thanks again for all your help.
