What is the best app to use to back up application data before rooting, if I choose to do a Factory reset?

Thanks.

Titanium backup. There's both a free and paid version in the market, there's an option to b/u the app, data or both

Thanks. Have you had any experience with My Backup? I heard that is a good one also. This is just a personal preference maybe....

Titanium backup is for rooted phones only. I'm not yet rooted.

I've never used my backup, yeah sorry I missed the before root part there lol all my backup programs I've obtained after root. SMS backup/restore I think is also root only. What are you looking to backup?

Well, I'm most concerned about notes, application data, photos....the usual stuff.
Mostly the application data though.

I've read most of the rooting primers and the one I decided to go with is the
Rooting for dummies->unrevoked3. It seems like the best for first timers.

While going through the "pre-root" recommendations, it recommends factory resetting and wiping the sd card too. So, me trying to the be good first time
rooter, that's what I will do.

Titanium backup would have to be used with z4root to get a temporary root before running unrevoked. My Backup Pro I believe is usable rooted or not. You may not need to factory reset your phone prior to rooting it. You can give it a shot and see if it works. Once in a while, I believe that installed apps can cause some issues with unrevoked and it is necessary to wipe the phone first but not always.

If the info is stored on your sdcard, unrevoked will not touch it.

I've cleared everything off of the sdcard as the go-by recommends formatting that, too.

Sounds like this method may be overkill.

I've seen Youtube videos that make it look much simpler than this....

First off, Welcome to the forum! Look, you don't *have* to do a Factory Data Reset prior to rooting, I didn't and I know plenty of other people that didn't either and rooted w/o issue just fine.....It's just recommended.
