Help Data problems after doing various things.

Newbie
hi .. i unlocked my s3 am having serious issues using data after that. i took it into a store where they are now just trying to tell me that it is a hardware issue which of course is just bs .. the phone was working great before i took it in. no problems whatsoever.

First Attempt at unlocking:

they used something called nsteam nspro. They had to root the phone to do this.
result: i couldn't do anything on the phone- no calls,no texts, no data.

second attempt:
i took it back and they ran nsteam nspro again.
result: i could make calls/texts. Data did not work intermittently (about half the time) and it could not get onto LTE. It looked like when it tried to get on LTE, things would stop working - it would show it was connected to LTE but data would not work. I am not sure if this was the trigger though, just an observation.

Third Attempt:
Downgraded from Jelly bean to ice cream sandwich so he could "get the code directly from the phone". Unrooted the phone.

Result: i can make calls, texts but had problems with data. Issues with data. I can no longer get more than 3G. Even that does not work properly without the connection dropping.

Fourth attempt:
They flashed everything and loaded firmware from my carrier. I don't have more details (sadly on any of the processes).

Result: i can make calls, texts but had problems with data. Issues with data. I can no longer get more than 3G. Even on 3G there are intermittent problems where the data connection just drops. It connects to 4G once in while. It rarely works when on 4G.

Tried:
1. Sat down with a friend who has an unlocked S3. My SIM worked fine in his phone. Put his SIM in my phone had the same problems. It is clearly not a carrier/sim issue.
2. Upgraded to Jelly Bean.
3. In the settings, checked the access point, it is definitely on the LTE option.

it's almost like something is "lingering" from attempt 1 that did not get cleared up.

any idea on what i can do to fix this? i don't care if the phone is not unlocked. i just want it to be back to the way it was. i dont' think a factory restore will do it..

Thanks, appreciate any input you guys may have!

Was all the cache data cleared (and a factory reset done) after each attempt? It should have been. Normal "unlocking" is just putting in the unlock code when the "locked out" SIM is put into the phone and the phone asks for the unlock code. It has nothing to do with rooting or ROMs.

thanks for the response rukbat...
i posted here because i thought the knowledge required to fix this would be here among this group.. the first attempt was made without an unlock code. i dont' know how that works exactly.. to answer your question though, no a factory reset was not done after each attempt. i dont' think the cache was cleared either.

first attempt was with software and later attempts were by pulling the code from the phone somehow and then to reload everything from my provider. my concern is more about what was done after rooting in the first attempt. i don't really know.. nsteam nspro.. i'm not sure what that does to actually unlock the phone.

i have downloaded something called adblogcat and was trying to dump out logs. there is a file not found exception (possibly due to having root and then removing it??).. but google seems to indicate that this is a fairly common error and is often logged wtih no real consequence.

Tried this from another forum, no luck :(

[Q] Rogers Galaxy S3 4G/LTE but I'm stuck on Edge? - xda-developers

"I was looking around at a few things some other people have done, not with the exact problem I have, but similar, I tried something out and it worked. Dial *#197328640#>UMTS>DEBUG SCREEN>PHONE CONTROL>NETWORK CONTROL>BAND SELECTION>LTE BAND PREFERENCE>LTE ALL, let it sit there for about 30 seconds and then reset the phone. Do it again, go in to BAND SELECTION and then choose AUTOMATIC, wait 30 seconds and reboot your phone again. I'm back to 4g and actually, it seems faster than when I originally had 4G, but I think I'm just used to how slow Edge is now :P. Although the other fix got me back to 4G as well, but then it swapped back to Edge so I'll wait for at least 24 hours before I can confirm it completely fixed. Once again thanks for the response!"

I don't have this other problem of a missing iMEI that they talk about...

Drew,

Who is your carrier?

I'd like to move your thread over to the proper SGS3 all-things-root area where you can get some additional feedback.

I'm going to move you to the SGS3 area for the time being since that's "closer" to where it needs to eventually be.

Thanks!
