We all stopped complaining and asking. Now we make fun of mac fanboys and rip on eachother. why worry about root when the igarbage just came out? I worry less about root and 2.1 and more about enlightening crackberry users to why android is better.

cyanogen is a rom maker i think, they/he makes what are considered some of the best roms...

i guess when "cooking" a rom you can add any number of features and tweaks to the UI so the skill of the builder directly affects the finally output on your phone.

The Linux kernel supports a myriad of options, features, hardware, etc, etc. The "build" supplied manufacturer's phones include what they want users to have. Doesn't mean it's right or wrong, it's just a decision based on business reasons (I believe tethering or even making our phones a WiFi access point is possible, but turned off for us) or performance reasons (poor battery life).

Gotcha.

So when xda roots this thing, will we then need to wait on a ROM, or is that exactly what they're doing right now?

You think they'll give us something for setting processor usage parameters, like power options on Windows? Overclocking it, and never have the processor below 50% or something?

Very true, Cyanogen is a genius, and he is a ROM maker as well as various Hacks and Mods..
But all ROMS have their own personal touchs or Flavor if you will.
Like with my Xperia, I make my own ROMS at times because I like things set up in a certain speed/way/apps/tweaks and etc.
Eventually once we have root, we will have different flavors to choose from.
I have started to complile my own 2.1 for down the road and so will others...
it just depends on what you use your phone for or how you like it really..

So once the phone is rooted and moved to a 2.x ROM, I take it Sense UI is no longer usable at that point? If you root and stay with 1.5, will it still work?

Sense is great, definitely one of the reasons I was attracted to the phone in the first place. Just wondering what will be lost in the process.

Root sounds very interesting... I've learned a ton about smart phones since I got this thing, and the process continues! Thanks for all the info and effort!

That is not the case at all. What does happen is that a ROM builder will choose whether to use Sense or to throw it out of the ROM. A lot of people will request to keep Sense so I'm quite sure that it will be left in some ROM's while others will take it out and use stock Android. You will have your choice of which ROMs you want to use. The great ROM makers usually make at least a couple that offer choices based on what their fans are looking for.

can we get a poll going now...just to get it out the way...who wants sense in their rom? :)
cause the question will pop up!
i know if its anything like winmo and touch flo 3d then most people will say no...cause it makes the phone laggy (could actually be the reason for some of our lag now!). but i want it!
give me sense with the animated wallpaper and navigation. and google goggles...and wifi tethering...and...aps2sd...and im good :)

I've read a few places that Android has a built-in "task killer" of sorts; that it starts killing apps when available memory drops below a certain level--a forum member states here that it's set at 16MB. He also speculates that this threshold can be changed with root access. Is this true?

(pleasepleasepleaseplease)

wait..your source is this site?

"that it's set at 16MB."

the source code has the auto-cleanup set to 16mb on our phone and it can't be changed without rooting the phone. It's a configuration item that's burned in.

it's not really a task killer either. at 16mb it starts asking all running applications that are not active to nicely free up memory. There is an event developers can listen to and wake up and free some memory and go back to sleep. A good citizen will do this but I doubt most developers do this. So after some time if that doesn't work the os will start closing down applications to secure more memory.

What HAS been stated is that the Android system is based off of Linux and the linux os handles memory differently. It has been stated that linux will recover memory when a critical threshold is met. Is this fact for our phones? I don't know.

No need yet really....
When I make a ROM, there will be a "Bare-Bones" one and also an "Premium" one...with sense and animated wallpers (if it works) and all the other goood stuff in it.

But yet again we are getting ahead of ourselves...
Root first...and progress is being made guys!
We will get Root...just a matter of time and patience on everyones part :)

Aah, I was under the impression that HTC was having problems applying Sense to 2.x. That's awesome!

The Eris is my first smart phone, I love tinkering with this thing! I've only had it since November, but man... it is soooo far beyond the Moto Q I came from (ugh) and I have learned a TON in the process.

My GF hit the nail on the head when she said it was the perfect phone for me... I enjoy playing with her Pre but get bored with it pretty easily; with Android it seems as if the possibilities are endless!

I'm really geeking on Android :-) Thanks for answering my noob questions, this community is great. Looking forward to my first root!
