Root Dead thread.

I would just like to know more about updating after rooting in general... someone said earlier that you can't update after you root at all. If that's true then is the only way to install custom roms?... I'm new to this so please go easy on me.

I have many questions such as yours, too Chaos.

I intend to tread lightly with this root privilege about to be available to us; I may just sit back for a long time and read in here how Eris users are doing, what issues they may deal with, etc.

The updates we hear about are more anticipated by me than root, mainly because it is a certainty that those OTAs will be sanctioned by HTC, Android software and the carriers themselves. If that's also true about getting root privileges, I haven't seen it said anywhere (could have missed it somewhere, maybe even here).

My only concern is that I may be biting off more than I can chew for how little I want, bit obtaining the last two things ill do just about anything to get

The discussions I've seen in here about overclocking the device make sense because it is now underclocked in the Eris. The only caveat seeming to be that it might be underclocked for a very good reason (battery life being an issue with many users, particularly users who really get the most out of the Eris on a daily basis).

MTU.. well, I'll stay off that, being as how my knowledge of it is pretty thin compared to how it could be after I read more on it.

The xbox has a min. Requirement for mtu. So i need the mtu of my phone to be 1500 to be able to link my droid internet to the xbox. But root access could be cool to have in general and I'm sure id find way more reasons to have root if I had root.

In the thread about anticipation of root (too lazy to get the link for you :p) there is ongoing discussion about what rooting has to offer.

I've been reading in there and am cheering them on, but as I say, I'm a bit of a lurker more than a pioneer when it comes to swishing my hand around in the inner workings of an operating system (I need to see what others have proven can be done safely).

It's way to early to not be lazy, but id love that link later. And I agree with not being much of a pioneer but I've tried everything else... it might be time to try pioneering :)

I was joking, Chaos (I do need to hit the :D or the ;) or whatever before hitting "submit reply").

We're in the thread now about anticipation of root. :p .. I mean :D

I'm very interested in the rooting of this phone as it's my first android phone (ex-iphone owner/developer) Looking for a good site to learn about ROM development and android kernel compiling - is XDA the place to start? Suggestions please :)

What brought you over to Android? I've heard a lot about the migration being one-way. Why is that?

Welcome to the light side of the force:)

Also, I wouldn't recommend moving APPS or SYSTEM MEMORY to SD because, your phone is only as fast as your SD and unusable without it.

That is when this was first done to the G1 it was only recommended to be done on a class 6 with at least a 2gig card. I did it with a class 4 and was disappointed so I returned it for a class 6.

I will be happy to get just plain Android 2.x I can do without out Sense. I got forced into buying the Eris when I joined someone else's plan. I went from t-Mobile(Doh!) to Verizon. I wish now that I would have stayed with T-Mobile. My contract would have been right in line with the Nexus being released and now with Verizon it will be another year before I can get a subsidized phone from them. One of the many bad moves I have made in my life.

Okay I know the Eris has 528 mhz processor but what is it clocked at when we get it?

528mhz.

When rooted, it can be overclocked. Most Hero users I know don't overclock their 528mhz though. They either

a) overclock a few mhz (not often)
b) use a different home program (OpenHome, dxTop, etc)
c) go to a 2.0/2.1 ROM

d) deal with it because Sense UI is awesome, and it's what makes the interfaces on these HTC phones > iPhone, and others (in my opinion, and others').

Root is great.

But what we have is pretty good too. 528mhz is fine with me.

Programs shouldn't be written in Java - it's incredibly inefficient by its incredibly awful distance away from machine code, but the apps you download for Android, for the most part, are. Lag will always be a part of our lives.

The n1 - a great phone, surely. If you can load sense UI on there, I'm on board. I went without Sense UI for a couple of weeks (for the speed of the interface), and I REALLY missed Sense. I went back (after trying a few other Homes).

I'd buy the n1 if it were the HTC Dragon instead. I think Sense > stock Android UI. If someone ports Sense to a ROM for it, I'm all over it.

My point is that, even though Rooting is sweet, our phone is great without. Way more functionality in many ways than iPhone and others, right out of the box, and Sense UI is part of what makes it better, IMO.

There is no way to disable Sense on the Eris, is there? Just run plain Android? I think I can live without sense if it's snappy enough without it.

@smacky

Go Setting >> Applications >> Manage Applications >> Sense >> Clear Defaults

Then click home and check use this default and click Home

or install Homeswitcher from the marketplace

I heard it was intentionally underclocked though?

This is common. Underclocking makes battery life longer and reduces heat among other things. It is the same reason Apple doesn't have Flash, they want to be able to claim a 10hr battery. With Flash enabled they could never achieve this. Their is a netbook out there with an 8hr battery with flash that I am sure if it was disabled it would last 10hr+

Wow. Thanks. Did not know you could do this. Gonna run this set up for a bit and see if my lag issues go away because of all the extra fluff gone.

Ya, I went to this but missed the HTC Widgets, then I discovered SweeterHome and the trays allowing you to make it so you only saw icons when you wanted them... Well, that was worth it!

That's just another program to install and worry about. With Sense completely gone, I don't miss a thing. My calender was through an app so that should come in handy.

Interesting.. would you mind describing more about how the device functions now? Suppose for example you want to go to a stock app.. are the icons still there?
