I try to keep up with what's happening with the various handsets so that I can quickly point peeps to the right info in required. It keeps me from tinkering with my Hero.... it's suffered enough already. :D

Oh oh oh. And... uh, how do I phrase this? Preoccupation win?

I need to find something like that to keep me from downloading new apps for my mac and my phone as a boredom relief tactic.

Anyone..... how can I get the green alien that pops up on the in call screen off or even change it............. I really dont like to see it??? Any help??????? Thanks

Set a custom picture for your caller.

Open the People app, Edit a contact (long-press, then Edit works), and at the top left corner, click the Camera and assign a picture to a contact.

Or open your Albums, open up a picture, and hit Menu > Set As > and make it a Contact's picture from there.

Also, this is probably not the proper place to ask a question like this. Start a new thread or find one with the 'Search' feature (about 1/8 of the way down from the top of the screen) to look for this first. You might find some useful information!

Jumping ahead to the future and the Eris is rooted, if VZW/HTC pushes 2.x.x to us before someone roots their phone and patches the exploit(s) used to do the root, I am thinking it could make them "start over". On the other hand, I don't know how "Android" versions are sync'd with Linux kernel versions or if they are at all (other than saying Android v "X.X" requires kernel "Y" or later.

Acidbath: Can you answer or ask your developer friends what would happen if the 2.x.x OTA update is pushed to us before they root the phone, what "issues" there may be, if any ?

It's possible to roll back. It was discussed somewhere on the forum here or over on xda forum. You dont have to update the phone after VZW pushes the ota. just choose reminder me later.

We have already forseen this issue, but honestly I think that we will be done before that happens.
HTC patches exploits based off Devs and Users finding them and exploiting them, they have no idea what exploits we have found, so even after the 2.1 OTA it would still be there, in theory of course.

As far as when the 2.1 OTA comes after you already have a Rooted and Cooked ROM on your Eris, you will no recieve it.
if you wanted it you would simply flash back to a stock ROM and then flash the update, I am sure it will be made available for those who want to flash via PC or whatever.

What kernel build do we currently have ? What kernel build did HTC release ?

I realize that once a phone is rooted, it no longer takes OTA updates. I was referring to if 2.1 got pushed to a phone before and that the 2.1 update just so happened to fix the exploit(s) you guys used. It would be starting over, yes ?

I would like to say I'm rooting for the root but that is just douchie...

Can't wait for Eclair AND root! Good luck, Acid!

There are enough "what if's" in this thread for a few forums haha. And as always: Thanks to acid and all the other dev's for their hard work on getting us this root!!

I just recently got an XDA account to look in on progress every now and then. Those Devs are hard at work. Those guys are my heros

So it'll take at least two months for the Eris to have any decent roms? Wow. Talk about anti-climactic.

It may take Verizon and HTC that long to release a new ROM but for the devs here? They can have a ROM put together and tested in a matter of a couple of days. From Acidbath's posts of the past, there are ROM's that are actually put together and awaiting root so that they can be put on the Eris. I wouldn't doubt it if the dev's are testing a ROM on the eris at this very moment.

If they have rooted a phone and working out the details, yes, they could have a working ROM and be going through the testing process. Otherwise, the ROM is just sitting waiting .... how can one know if it works ?

Ya got to remember guys, the Hero has been rooted for quite a while, and that hardware is basically the same. It should only take a few tweeks for the carrier (Verizion) info to be loaded into a Hero rom. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The ROMs will be close. We'll see. The LCD is only 65k(or whatever) colors on the Hero and 262k on the Eris. The differences in the software that drives the hardware is likely mostly the same, but sometimes subtle differences make the difference between working 100% and working 0%.

We can hope!

The carrier info is loaded into the radio, but the hero ROMS will be the easiest to port.

Is this talk of rooting the Eris moot since we're supposed to be getting 2.x next month? It seems to me that what ever exploit comes in at basically the 11th hour will more than likely be patched by HTC/Android when we move up to 2.x

Just my 2

Thank god.

Not sure how far back, but Acidbath addressed this in this thread... The Devs have been REAL quiet about what the exploits are, so if HTC doesn't know how they got in, how are they gonna patch the hole???

You make a good point. The Devs are keeping this hush hush. Until ROOT is 100% there will be no leaking of any info beside what Acidbath & Caddy give us
