Help Default ANDROID Browser

mrtoolman

Newbie
Hey everyone, I need to know what the default web browser for Android OS is and how to get it on an Optimus M. I don't want MetroWEB. I'm working with a mobile app developer for work and we want to see if the apps will work on most android devices, so I need the default browser :). Thanks in advance!

Browser.apk

That's MetroWEB. I want the one that is not associated with a specific carrier that most devices come with. I know other phones don't have MetroWEB

They are called the same on any Android OS...

You want to replace it with a standard Android Browser.apk?

Many of these apk's sync with the OS or other apks using shared id's. Pulling one from the circle can break others or disturb the process of the OS. Lg w/ MPCS have made it nearly impossible to modify its contents, going as far as even using encryptions on even their pictures (.png's) inside the apk's... Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news...

The same rules apply here as well...

it's just a different name. My buddy has a droid x and it's the same browser.

do you really think metro would have any nice running program? all their crap looks like it belongs on my old 386 computer.

on the Optimus M there is NO default browser except MetroWEB.
It's the only choice when you first boot up the phone. There are no others.

When you install Dolphin HD or Skyfire, those are added to the browser choices. And you can choose the "always" option to make another browser be the new default browwer.

But MetroWEB is the ONLY browser available on the phone when you get a new Optimus M. It's the only browser, it's the default browser. Maybe it's the "Android" browser in disguise, I don't know. But it's called MetroWEB.

I know MetroWEB is the default for the Optimus M. I need the default for Android OS as a whole (ex: IE comes with all Windows computers, I want the Android equivalent distribution-wise of IE)... not for any specific phone. Does that make sense? I guess I'm not communicating my point very well.

No, to be honest, it wasn't communicated well. ;) It sounded like you were saying there's a "default" (stock) Android browser hidden somewhere on the Optimus M and you wanted Optmimus M owners to either tell you where it is or how to activate it...

Optimus M owners don't have any browser on their phones at first boot up except for MetroWEB. So, if you want some generic/default/stock Android browser, you should look at a phone that has it?

What browsers do the the other Optimus siblings use :

LG Optimus S
LG Optimus U
LG Optimus T
LG Vortex (Verizon's version)

I know there's a custom rom for the Optimus S. What browser does it use?

2.2-Browser.apk

Put this in /system/app... Let me know if it works...
You have to remove (save it first w/ its Browser.odex brother) the original...

It has a G Chrome logo so you can tell the difference...

edit: FYI
Opra mini is the fastest browser for Android because it compresses before it sends it....

I've heard Opera mini recommended... Does it do flash videos as well as skyfire and dolphin HD?

I haven't played with it recently. But it work wonders on the Moto i1, so good, it's the stock browser on the phone using boostest nations worst 2g network...

No Opera mini does not play flash vids. Only one that seems to work is skyfire, which loads in a seperate window, though it will not work on vids with mutiple parts.

Ahh help!! I can't get the default browser installed back on!!! :(

Normally, your system folder is protected and was mounted R/O (read only)
Your system partition has to be mounted as R/W (read/write)..
Or the OS won't let you (re)place or write anything on it.
-using a file manager with root privileges, most have the option to remount the partition to the system folder.

Option 1: place the Browser.apk and Browser.odex in /system/app
Option 2: place the 2.2-Browser.apk in system/app

It is mounted as R/W (using root explorer). I put the files in /system/app and it didn't show up anywhere on either one, so I tried running the .apk file neither one worked (only had one of the options in the folder at a time)

I can't install any apps now, even from the Market.... what's the deal?

EDIT:
I am getting the error "the process android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." and have to press the Force Close button

Okay, so like i said earlier I just followed RichieDaze's direction, its pretty self explainitory:

So download the link, then back up you browser.apk, then copy the downloaded file to your /system/app folder. Simple as that.

I have noticed that some apk's you also have to change the permissions.

Change it to rw-r--r--

Reboot and retest

Didn't work for me. I moved the (metroWeb) browser.apk and the browser.obex file from system/app to an sd card folder.

then I re-named the 2.2 browser.apk file (which was on my sd card) to just browser.apk (mimicking the other browser's name). I then copied that over to sytem/app to make it be the stock android browser.

I then clicked on the apk to install. it said in installed but after that every time I tried to open the browser I got error messages. Said it was not installed.

I powered down, powered back up, tried to run again. Same problem.

Tried to install again and run. Same problem.

So, I gave up.

I then deleted it, and moved the original (metroWEB) browser.apk and browser.obex file from the sub-folder on my sd card back to sytem/app folder. I clicked on the .apk file and tried to re-install it. Got error message saying it was not installed.

However, my Market app seems to run OK, and my default browser is Dolphin HD and that runs fine. So, the phone is OK -- just won't install and run the "stock" Android browser in place of the metroWeb browser.

I'm sure if I install that downloaded browser under the 2.2 browser name, it will probaby install OK -- but the point was to try to replace the "browser.apk" file with another browser using the "browser.apk" name. That experiment did not work for me.
