Denied another job...it's not easy

Nor does the migrant farm worker think it's fair that he picks lettuce all day for three bucks and can't get antibiotics for his sick kids in one of the most affluent countries because he can't get insurance. But the single mom trying to make end's meet by working a second job doesn't think it's fair that her taxes go up just to provide care for the uninsured and their families.

Several years ago, after being "downsized" from good job when the company was taken over, I was interviewed for a position as a department head at a local college. It looked promising as I had all the proper credentials, 20+ years of practical experience in the field and the right salary requirements. I was called back no less than five times for interviews with different and ever-increasing people of importance, each time being told that I was the leading candidate and the interview was "just a formality." After going around for almost three months and even going so far as to participate in a mock classroom, they hired someone else who had less experience and performed poorly in the classroom. Their reasoning was "we are going another direction."

I found out later that this was the guy they wanted all along and I was being used to negotiate his salary lower. Sure I was pissed, but i don't blame either the guy who got the job or the school. They were all simply trying to get what they wanted as was I. I just happened to lose that time.

Personally, I don't think it's fair that the Yankees can afford to buy winning ball teams every year.

I hate the Yankees too.

No this IS a race issue, and it's complete bullshit. And if I ever find the idiot that came up with this idea, I'd shoot him & bury him myself.

Business's BY LAW are REQUIRED to keep a racial/ethnic diverisity within thier company, regardless of qualifications.

And if people REALLY want to complain about what the "White man" did to them, why don't they go blame the "Black Man" in Africa who FIRST IMPRISONED, ENSLAVED, AND THEN SOLD them to the "White man".

And yes, this is Personal to me, as I don't like being told who to hire in our business. Eff that, and I won't listen anyways.

Yea it's kind of a double edged sword. Very difficult subject. Not because of the sensitivity, but because of the complexity. We didn't do anything wrong. It was the past whites who persecuted blacks and as a result, our generations are the ones that have to pay for it (i.e. give them jobs over whites that are more qualified).

It would be nice to see Americans of all colors and races to be on a level standard of living. But on the other hand, it's not fair to the white kid who grew up in a poor family and worked his butt off to be rejected while the Chinese or Black or Woman with less intelligence and experience gets the job just because of their race/gender.. which in and of itself seems prejudice/racist unfortunately. It's also not fair that the black kid's dad is in jail and didn't have a good opportunity for life lessons and an education (As of 2000, fewer African American men were in college than were in prison. Moreover, black children were nine times as likely as white children to have at least one parent in prison, Encyclopedia.com). It's also impossible to *force* everyone into the same standard of living through acts and laws. As you can see, it's pretty much a lose lose situation. There are so many variables in this equation that it may never get solved except by time itself - long ways away.

I grew up in Milwaukee and it has been a top segregated city for many years. It's a really sad site but is getting a little better. You cross one street and it's an all poor black neighborhood with crime and then the other side are all middle class to wealthy whites on Lake Michigan. It's Port Washington Road. It's called the divider. All of the black kids are in poor Milwaukee inner city schools which are complete garbage - half of the kids drop out and the teachers can't get a lesson in.. while everyone east of Port Washington Road are born into well known suburbia schools. They started busing in blacks (about 5 per grade) when I was in high school to help remedy the situation. I'm betting that number has increased. Moral of the story - America has a LONG way to go.

It's kind of like with how our government is screwing everything up and now the future generations will pay for it in taxes and higher inflation. You may be able to fix something, but someone in the end will end up suffering.

The examples are endless.

Regarding your company, our company doesn't have any racial/ethnic diversity and it hasn't for 30 years from what I've heard from the seniors that have been here for a long time. I don't fully understand where the requirements come in to hire people of other ethnicity.. perhaps it's for large corporations. But I know most small businesses don't get hassled if they have an entourage of white employees. Ours certainly never hasn't.

The discussion sucks and there isn't 'a solution' except for time itself. But America might be United States of China by then anyways.

But to answer the OPs question. You can't use these acts and laws as an excuse for not getting a job. If you have the qualifications, a corporation will eventually hire you.

But another solution is to find a small company if you want a job that bad without worrying about discrimination. Small companies do not really have color/ethnicity requirements. At least none that any abide by. This is a fact. You will not see a 10-15 person company get hit by the government for not having an employee of another color/race/ethnicity.. unless someone has insurmountable evidence that they weren't hired for being of another color (which is pretty much impossible).

Your other problem is that companies aren't hiring much right now. Give it time and keep applying.

Slavery goes back to bible times, I don't see people complaining about the bible being racist

Slavery in bible times was way more humane, and could more be compared to selling your services at a long time.

Thank you. I probably should have read the whole thread.

and I apologize to the OP. I tend to lump all of these into the same category... the person assumes they could only be denied the job because of race, but has no actual proof of that.

I would have to say, that I would see the Equal Employment Opportunity Department and discuss it with them. But that's just me.

As far as hiring quotas, and whatnot... my opinion is... you can't fix racism, with racism.

I'm a student who has to pay for college myself because I wasn't ethnically diverse enough to get a scholarship.

And the sad part about this is, I got denied for financial aid too. Then this year I reapplied, and I marked that I'm native american(which I am, btw, very small percentage but still) and low and behold, I got something like 5.5k in GRANTS and another 10k in forgivable loans, PER SEMESTER. Seriously?

That's because the high school graduation rates for Native Americans are extremely low and if you end up getting in to college there are all sorts of grants and scholarships you qualify for. It might not seem fair but it was a carrot dangled to encourage better school performance.

Still doesn't make it right that I check a box and the world caters to be all of a sudden. Not to mention when I originally went into College I had a 4.0 GPA in AP classes none the less, but still no help because they felt my mom & dad should pay for it.
