Desire battery consumption

Hi all,

Just thought I would let you know since updating to Froyo - I have gone from yesterday morning unplugging phone at 10am. It's been 26 hours and my battery is on 54%...

Before Froyo..I would unplug at 10am...and have to be charging it again by 11pm because it would die in the middle of the night causing my alarm to not go off...

So I have had a substantial increase in the battery life since Froyo - from 100-0 in 14 hours to 100-56% in 26 hours - looking like I will easily get two days out of the phone without needing to charge...

I use it for normal text, camera and calls and I would say using it more often lately as Ive been getting loads of apps to shove on the SD card :)

Well i'm having trouble since the update, I'm on a debranded orange desire, and at the moment my phone is completly dead in 3 hours or mininal use, no calls or text and all data connections turned off. Phone is also running very warm.
I think that problem is with an app not letting the phone standby but dont know how to find which one, can anyone help out?

Download an app called spare parts and check partial wake usage

as my avatar suggests.....
have you tried turning it off and on again? :p
would try that with a battery pull, when I first got my desire I had high "Android System" usage that a normal reboot wouldnt fix.

But that software should show you battery culprits

on 2.1 I used to have excellent battery life, around 36 hours with normal use. Since upgrading to Froyo, my battery has totally dischanged from 100% in about 10 hours of normal use. 10 hours!!
This is all with always on mobile off, GSM connection, plain black wallpaper, and screen brightness at 50%. I did have the data connection on all day, but only on GSM, as I did before when it lasted a day and a half. Very unhappy and confused!

I had the same issue when I first updated to Froyo for the first 2 weeks, I had really REALLY horrible battery. Less than 12 hours with light use. I think the battery has to 'relearn' how the new OS function or something, but after a couple of weeks, I've noticed battery life slowly improving. Right now I can do about 40 hours with light use (30 minutes phone call, 1 hour of music, 1 hours surfing, 2 hour adiko). I suggest you wait and see if your battery will improve :) I did discharge the battery completely once a week or two (though there have been people that said this 'hurts' the battery'...but I think it helps XD). As the Desire and Nexus are very similar, I'm thinking Froyo might have the same effect on your phone that it has on mine and I'm simply saying that there's hope after Froyo with your battery :) lol

Another thing that might be causing the bad battery is that you might have an app that's not compatible with Froyo so now the codes not working properly (like it's awake constantly). You can try what nacatomi said and use sparepart to see if that's the case :)

Great tips even for any Android user (not just Desire). It sucks to pull out your phone at around 1 or 2pm and see the battery at 1/5 health and still have several hours before you can go back home to charge it.

Bluetooth in a2dp use* (not standby): every 100 minutes is 1% total battery loss
Cell standby in 4 bar area: every 2 hours is 1% total battery loss
Phone idle: every 2 hours is 1% total battery loss
Display (on auto setting): every 44 minutes it is on is 1% total battery loss
Wifi connection to a WPA access point: every 76 minutes is 1% total battery loss

*I am assuming the mp3 player process usage is under "Android" battery usage and not "Bluetooth usage".

I'm keeping a close eye on my battery since noticing it's going down quicker with 2.2 and it is indeed draining faster than it was with 2.1. Also, it no longer charges to 100% and then drops quite quickly in the first hour after you've unplugged it from the charger.

At the moment I would rather still be on 2.1 with better battery life, considering 2.2 hasn't really brought anything that changes the way I use my phone.

I'm on 2.2, and my phone charged to 100% over night, has been on standby for at least two hours, and I've dropped 1% battery life. It's not a generic 2.2 battery issue.

I too have noticed quicker battery drain since I installed Froyo. I have the Desire for over a month now and battery has settled fine within first 10 days of usage (with 2.1). It could easily last a day and a half with some moderate (and occasionaly heavy) usage - 1-2 hours of surfing, couple of hours playing games etc.

Now, since Froyo was installed, it can barely last a day and I have to be very careful about how I use it.

This are the values after whole day of usage (finished charging at 8AM, battery depleted at 11PM):
Cell standby 29% (0% time without signal)
Android system 29%
Phone idle 26%
Display 14%
Wi-Fi 2%

EDIT:
Just for the record, Wi-Fi or 3G is on only when surfing. Syncing is disabled

Since I have installed Froyo, I have done a factory reset. I then fully charged my desire, then took it off the charger. Then re-installed about 8 apps using my home WIFI, and used the phone as normal, e.g. phone calls some WIFI stuff. I have set all my apps to sync either manually or not at all. When the phone battery indicator turned red and the phone suggested to charge it, the phone was at 15% and the counter in the battery info page read 2d 2h 56m 32s since unplugged.

How's everyone else fairing since installing Froyo?

How long did it last with 2.1?

Hope that will be the case on Desire, cuz right now the battery life is a nightmare to me.. I had a full charge at 3pm, and the battery drained at 8pm..

If installed, try uninstalling the latest official Facebook update, v1.3.0, because it doesn't let the phone sleep, so I wonder if this has been the cause of my poor battery performance lately. I've uninstalled it and will see how it goes.

I uninstalled it about an hour ago and the Android System unsage has dropped by 6% - definatly think something was up with FB

EDIT - Actually scrap that, its just gone to the top of the battery usage list again!!!!!

I've just had a look at running services and there are loads...
3G watchdog, Handcent, Jorte calendar, SDCard Memory Widget, Internal Memory Widget, Battery Left, yahoo mail sync, and some regulars!!!

My unbranded Desire (purchased from CPW) on orange used to last less than a day. I did a factory reset as suggested by HTC engineer and things got a little better. But the battery never lasted over 1.5 days.

I had Froyo last week, and things weren't significantly changed.

I leave mobile internet always on, keep google talk running, have auto sync on for gmail & facebook.

Since yesterday things have changed slightly.

See, I didn't used to use my home wifi because I have an unlimited internet plan. So, I just used to keep orange mobile internet always on. And I need the phone to be always on internet because I want to be online on google talk always so that people can get in touch with me any time.

Yesterday, for a change I kept my phone completely on home wifi, during the day and night. And to my amazement, after 1 day and 11 hours the battery is still at 50%.

That suggests me that orange mobile internet connection is consuming quite a lot of power (even more than Wifi???)!!!

I am planning to keep testing this over next few days.

Anyone else has observed anything similar about orange mobile internet connectivity consuming too much battery?

Well, I've had my Desire since Monday afternoon and prior to today I didn't get more than 18 hours out of my battery. Yesterday I installed the stock Power Control widget on one of my home screens and actively use it to switch Bluetooth and Wireless on and off and also the Mobile Network widget for the 3g. I've also set my updates (news feeds, friend feed etc) to manually update as it was defaulted to every 5 minutes! In addition, I've disabled Google Talk as it was constantly running in the background (which I didn't realise until today!).

So far today, the phone has been unplugged for 13hrs 45mins and the battery indicator is down to approx. 70% (I haven''t installed a more advanced battery app, so can't be sure of the exact value). Obviously something's working better as I'm on course for almost 40 hours now. I've made a few calls, sent a few messages and updated my feeds a few times today, although admittedly I haven't caned the internet today as we have that at work! Also had Bluetooth on for the drive home. I haven't installed any Task Killers or Power Management apps as I've heard that 2.1 already manages power fairly well.

I think users just need to be mindful of exactly what their phone is doing. It's a bit of a shame having to micro-manage like this, but hey - these things are power-hungry! I still get far much more time on my phone than my laptop could even dream of, so in comparison, the Desire isn't actually that bad! :)

So I just checked again and I have between 30 - 40% battery left after 30hrs 35mins which is great!

What I have also noticed though, is that Google Talk seems to constantly run in the background, unless I manually stop it. I had previously gone into the settings and disabled automatic login, but somehow the application manages to bypass this. Anyone else found that with Google Talk? It's pretty frustrating as it eats battery and I never use it! I've gone back into the settings and disabled auto login again, so we'll see what happens.

On another note, i used GPS for about 3 mins today trying to find an address and Google Maps somehow now accounts for 51% of my total battery useage! WTF?!

I'd like to permanently disable Google Talk as well as I have no interest in it but as far as I know it's not possible.

Yep - GPS really savages the battery - I've just ordered a windscreen mount and car charger today as these are a must have if using the Desire as a sat nav.

Google Talk always comes back, I think it's fixed in Froyo but I'm not running it yet.

Personally after 6 hours use today my battery is down to 40% already, only been running 37% of the time with WiFi been on 55%.

Google Talk was an integeral service to other functions of Android, but was misleading in the Running services menu because it appeared by its app name. If you go to Running services on 2.2 you will see one called Google Messaging Service, which I believe is the newly named Google Talk component that Android needs.
