Google Messagin Service will always be running as that's the SMS application. So would the Touch Input.

The Media Scanner Service would most likely be the culprit...I think that's what using the Mediaserver. I'm not very tech savy either (mostly Google for answers) so it seems that you have an app that is using the Media Scanner Service.

MediaScannerConnection provides a way for applications to pass a newly created or downloaded media file to the media scanner service. The media scanner service will read metadata from the file and add the file to the media content provider. The MediaScannerConnectionClient provides an interface for the media scanner service to return the Uri for a newly scanned file to the client of the MediaScannerConnection class

Found a thread that has a similar issue (high battery usage of the Media server): http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/15784-mediaserver-what.html

I've tried to find some thing on the phone to disable Media Scanner Service but have been unable to find anything.

Now my battery is at 25% on 4 hours and 22min.

Mediaserver 44%
Cell standby 24%
Phone Idle 23%
Androis system 7%
Display 2%

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Less than 5 hours and it dies..

smokeygb, are you using the airplane mode or is this with 2G/3G on?

No i dont have Airplane mode on...I will try airplane mode when it fully recharges up. Can i still web browse with this still on ?
What is 2G / 3G ?? Sorry dont know !

Ok it's 05:16 PM and about to die and the following.
Mediaserver 40%
Phone idle 24%
Cell standby 24%
Android system 7%
Display 5%
6Hour 58 min now...dead.

Sounds like you're running a DLNA app which enables the Mediaserver service. This type of service is for sharing music, videos, photos with TV, computer, etc. over a wifi connection. Obviously it eats battery.

2G is Edge (use to talk on the phone)
3G is Data (allows you to use the Internet)

So you are using 3G as you're using the web browser

2G is Edge (use to talk on the phone)
Just to clarify, 2G is a set of technological specifications that includes EDGE which is actually a data spec. GSM is the spec for voice on the phone. We also have GPRS for data within the 2G spec on the Desire (technically EDGE is actually within 3G specs, but phones show it as a 2G connection).
3G is Data (allows you to use the Internet)
3G is also a set of specs that includes HSPA for data and voice simultaneously. 3G voice is typically clearer with less background noise and sounds more natural compared to 2G GSM calls, but of course that depends on the phone in use and how well the chipset implements the specs.
So you are using 3G as you're using the web browser
Depends on the tower you're connected with at the time and why the Desire shows the type of data connection in use. If you're browsing the web and the phone shows an E for EDGE, then you're using the slower 2G data network and GSM for voice. If you see 3G or H (HSPA), then you're using the faster 3G network for both voice and data.

Thank you bfksc for the technical explanation, lol...I went the quick way with links to wiki but it looked weird so threw in short explanations which I guess weren't enough.

Thanks, I was bored and needed to increase my post count!
:D
Seriously, the other poster must be running a DLNA service or something else like it to eat that much battery. I get 2 days out of my Desire mostly, and a full day if I use it more heavily. I've had 3 days out of it when I was down in PEI and couldn't use 3G data...
:(

Think my battery is screwed...

I charged my phone all night and it died before I got to work :)

Then it did not want to charge, the orange light did not want to go on, will be going to a Lab88 to see if it's not the cable, I think I'll end up buying a new battery. Not sure how this might have happened though.

Now I'm using my faithfull ol W910
The battery life is just worlds better than what my desire will ever be, and such is the evolution of 'cellphones'

I might even end up keeping my W910 in my car as a backup, might also find myself using my backup phone more :)

I used to get around 6-8 hours of battery life out of my Desire.. A few weeks ago I did a few things that have really helped:

-Disable Always-on mobile data
-Wireless timeout to 15mins (press the menu button at the wireless settings to access this)
-Installed y5 Battery saver (only did this recently so I'm not sure how big the savings are yet)

Now the phone can last 36-42 hours with light usage (some mp3's and audio books, some quick browsing). Of course when I use it heavily by for example browsing the web continually for more than an hour, I can almost see the battery bar getting shorter before my eyes, and the whole device heats up. But at least it achieves 1/8th of the standby time of my previous phone now.

My handset's been going for 2 days now and will definitley survive with 40% until tonight! Been using it plenty aswell so i'm more than happy :D
Ffricin love the desire, now orange... sort 2.2 out so i can preserve internal memory and i will marry it. Lol

I don't see any problem with yours, I use mine as much and I get the same stand-by. I tell you, probably there's nothing wrong, just that the today's battery life is not up to par with smartphone demands.

lol, it's all about the post counts :P next it'll be the thanks count ;)

I get similar battery life on my N1 and yeah you might be right, but I've never used a DLNA service to share music/files so I can't speak from experience how much battery that uses.

It seems like you've listened to a lot of music/video. Yes, 7 hrs is about all you can get out of it.
lol, it seemed like that except smokey said this in an earlier post:

I've not listen to No music and no videos.

Smokey, can you give us your list of apps you're using? Maybe someone here can see if one of your apps might be the culprit. You can use the appbrain app

But the thing is i was not doing any music listening.

I was testing it on a light browse only and got so little use.

I have now sent the phone off to CPW Tech guys and even they said they think the phone is faulty or battery ( There really good  these guys )
So i am now without it for 10 days.
Many Thanks for those who have tried to help me and i'll report back what its like or what they have found.

Good old Carphone Warehouse... i hate those guys. Lol

Another thing to try is conditioning your battery. If I remember the steps correctly,
1. Charge your phone normally for 8hrs or so.
2. unplug the phone, switch it off then replug it into the charger for another hr.
3. Unplug the phone, switch it on, leave it for 2 mins then switch it off again.
4. Replug the phone to the charger while switched off for another hr.
5. Unplug the phone, switch it on and use as normal.

Someone needs to put a sticky somewhere informing people that this superstitious, hand-waving exercise is pointless.

It could also mention that app killing applications are also a pointless waste of battery time too.

WEll my phone has been sent to HTC because CPW tech guys cannot get battery to last any longer than 4 hours on standby and that was by going to default.
So another 14/21 days to wait..ggrrr

I've had this problem for just 2 days. Then i added the power control widget to my homescreen where i can adjust the screen brightness, turn on/off automatic syncing, turn mobile internet or wifi on/off as and when i need it. Voila! Its 7:30PM and i still have like 80% left. Charged it this time last night :D.

I've switched my 3G off all day today (only had it on for about 10 mins to browse the web) & I notice a big improvement.

Over the next few days I'm gonna leave it on & try the untick always on tip above & see what that does.

I think it's just trial & error really.

If you don't need 3G on all the time it seems a good idea to switch it off.

how do these settings look

Up time: 195:21:38

Awake time: 130:39:45

Battery Use

Android System: 41%
Cell standby: 26%
Phone idle: 17%
Display: 14%
Wifi: 2%

i've sent like 70 texts today and been on wifi for 15 mins

current level 31%

is my battery duff?
