Desire battery consumption

??? First time yesterday night that I placed my Desire into airplane mode and used it as an alarm clock to wake me up. Battery still shows 100%!
I tried this for the first time last night. Fully charged at 11pm. Woke up with the alarm at 6.45 and battery showed 81%! Have checked one page on the internet and its now 8.56 and showing 71%.
I am getting fed up with the battery life. It reminds me of when I first bought an N95.

My Desire is new (3 days old today) and I get the same thing. Barely got anything on there and i'm killing most things off, so like Cultor I think something seems up. I'm thinking maybe i've done something wrong in my initial setting up stuff?
I think it's wrong to go so public with this phone when users havn't got the foggiest on how to actualy use it.. I ran into somebody the other day who is a complete novice and only ever used nokias but now has the desire, they said they were taking it back to the shop becuase the battery is broken, They said tey were only getting 6 hours use off a full charge, When I looked at the phone, Wifi was on, Mobile Data was on, GPS was on and screen was on full brightness, I installed an Quick Sys info on it to see what was running and the list was long!
But I explained that you need to turn these things off when you aren't using them. and the response was 'how do i do that? and what's the point in having it if I can't use it??' I then installed the power control widget on the homescreen (this is a must, it should be there by default).
This guys understanding of the phone was not surprising... But for me, I just knew from the start what was needed.. coming from a long line of HTC and SPV phones I've owned in the past.
But another shocker I came across was this woman who didn't even know you could put apps on it, didn't know what the market was and had been using the phone for 2 weeks just with what it came with!!! The phone is next to useless without apps!!! You basicly build your own phone with a phone like this. The 1st thing you should be doing when you switch it on is getting your google account and going to the market or visiting appbrain.com

fatriff - you speak the truth. Actually, I'd say the first thing to do should be to visit this forum. The instructions that come with most smartphones are hopeless, and it's only from forums like this that I've learnt to get the most out of my phone.
It is hardly the manufacturer's fault if people buy products they have not bothered researching beforehand. Why on earth would someone buy a top end product if they don't want top end features?? The Desire is my 1st smartphone and only my 5th mobile in 10 years, but I knew what I was buying. You wouldn't leave your car's lights on all night & be surprised that your battery was flat the next day would you?
Getting back to power consumption, I've had my Desire a few weeks now and a full charge will last me for a day. Average use consists of texting, browsing the web on the commute to & from work and having a look around the marketplace & the odd download of an app.

It's a proportionate measure, not absolute. So it just means that of 100% usage the system did 90%. If you had other things switched on this would be a lower percentage as these other things would consume some of the 100%.
The question is how much battery charge does it use? How much did the battery go down?
Try something like Battery Graph to see how much/fast your battery is affected.
Ok, I have got to the bottom of the car charging issue, and it's the phone that is the culprit, well sort of.
Basically the desire detects whether it is on USB or AC charge.
If on USB charge it will draw no more than 500ma to charge, as I believe this is the max that a PC USB connection will supply.
If on AC it will draw around 900-950ms current.
How does it know it's on AC I hear you ask? Well I'm not sure about the HTC mains charger, but if you short the data pins (the two centre ones) on a car charger, the phone thinks it's on AC and draws the current accordingly.
I have tested this with a charger from Maplin
Micro DC to USB Adaptor : Caravan & Camping : Maplin
I opened it up and soldered the two centre pins together, see attached pic, the red dots indicate the two pins I have soldered together.
The charger will now happily charge my battery whilst I have Bluetooth and Navigation running, and whilst making/receiving calls. This was also using the HTC supplied USB cable, not sure if it is true, but I have read that the cable can also affect charging.
Obviously the car charger needs to be able to supply the correct current, so making this mod on a charger rated below 1A is not worth it.
I take no responsibility for any damage cause by this, as I say it worked for me using the above charger

Most phones should have an auto stop for the battery when then phone is 100% charged.
When you use the phone when it is still plugged in, the phone will use the current from the outlet instead of the battery.
Yes live wallpaper uses more resources then a static one. Thus using more power and depleting the battery quicker.
' battery use' that is part of the phone's setting allows you see the % of battery being used for each app that uses more than 1% of the battery. You can create a short cut for this on your home screen.
Anyone who is seeing their battery discharge in 3 or 4 hours and/or android system useage at about 90% should try a reboot (remove the battery for at least 11 seconds). It worked for me after FM Radio crashed and sent the android system into a spin. Since the reboot I get over 24 hours and the android system uses less than 10% most of the time.
hi sorry to post this but ive just put pandahome on and some nice themes,i have MY htc desire set up quite well but when i was running htc sence i had power widget but also had a single widget for gprs to turn on and off manually but i'll be damned if i can remember what or where i found it/find it,any help would be greatly appreciated,

I think you are mistaken here. The battery is rated at 1400 milliamp-hours. That is not the same as milliamps.
From my tests, the phone draws 400ma from a standard USB socket. If the phone recognises the charger, it will draw up to 800ma, depending on circumstances.
400ma is 2 watts. If you are navigating, it is likely your app is making your phone circuit use more than 2 watts. This is more to do with the app than the phone. Given that sat nav devices with he same type of CPU (ARM processor) work effectively with a 250Mhz CPU, drawing much less than 2 watts, a sat nav program on the desire should use no more than 25% of CPU power and perhaps 1w with all bits enabled.

So just to clarify, your emails still come in and the weather / friendstream etc still update?
So mobile data is off unless an app requests a connection?
Are your emails definitely push (instant) or does the app just update in intervals?

no i use it regularly for phone calls and browsering the net.
The last rom i used was DeFroST_0.6
it has all the HTC crap removed and a lot of google ones such as google maps, which you can just re-download from the google store.
As i also said it using Googles andorid 2.2. currently only relesed for the nexus.
The battery shopuld last a long time but because of all the crap that connects to the net even when your not using it the battery life gets used up very quickly.
same with windows mobile. windows mobile lasts ages before it needs recharging.
before the update I had to charge my phone everyday.

Interesting that you're getting...a week out of your battery. From the N1 Forum, it doesn't seem that people are seeing THAT much of a battery improvement with their N1 running 2.2.
I can't speak from experience since I'm waiting for my OTA as well
But I'd love to get a week of battery life with normal use. Can you be more specific with average daily phone usage when you're calling or on the net or doing other stuff?
no. but it might have it built into the rom.

Yeah if you install the undervolt ROM...but this would explain the really great battery life
