Desire, Insurance and Rooting.

Hi there,

I have a Desire with Virgin Mobile and I pay for insurance monthly (it DOES cover accidental damage) If I were to root the phone, try out 2.2 or custom ROMS and the phone ended up bricked, would my insurance be void? Would it be possible to put the original ROM backup back on if it was bricked?

It does say in the terms and conditions :

Cover will not be provided for:
1. Loss or damage caused by, or during, maintenance or modification of the phone and/or accessorie

Thanks

Highly likely any claim you made would be denied I'm afraid.

No idea re. your second question.

The problem may come if you can't switch the phone on to reset it. My mate did the jailbreak thing with his month old iPhone. Two weeks later the screen died for no apparent reason. He sent it off for repair under warranty and it came back saying as it had been modified it was no longer covered under warranty. He had to replace the iPhone in the end as he had 22 months of contract to go and sell his old one for spares. It cost him a fortune.

And no, he didn't have loss/theft insurance!

If you brick your phone rooting it, your insurance won't cover that.

If it gets lost, stolen or accidentally damaged I can't see any reason why your claim would be denied though.

If you root and it causes a problem this will not be covered. However, rooting is not the same as jailbreaking. There is little chance of anything going wrong rooting your desire.

As danfrance says, if you accidentally lose your phone instead, this will be covered.
