Desire V Galaxy s

I don't trust numbers on linpack's web site. Most of these phones are overclocked and tweaked. It's easy to cheat.
Here is an other example where the galaxy S beat the desire in linpack :

anyway guys, please don't let thus get off topic. If you want to talk about that do it in another thread.

nah no need to take it else where, it will end here
was a healthy chat, its good to see both sides which i think the op will get an idea.
samsung G-S is better than i initially thought, still wouldnt have one but no one can argue with those stats really.

I decided against the Galaxy S just because of the feel of it in my hand (a little too wide to be comfortable). But that's both personal and easy to test.

Several posters have commented on the TouchWiz setup vs HTC's Sense, especially the "default home screen at the far end of the list" business (very iPhone-like) in the Samsung. But you aren't forced to use either launcher. I'm currently running LauncherPro on a Desire, and while I do choose the default home page to be in the middle of the list rather than at the end, it allows me to choose whatever I fancy (and change it). So that type of thing need not be an argument either way - the beauty of Android is that you aren't stuck with the defaults. The main difference is that if you prefer either Touchwiz or Sense to the alternatives then you do need to have either a Samsung or an HTC (respectively).

Btw I just visited the Galaxy S forum to check that LP works OK on that phone - didn't take long to find an answer (which was positive). But if you're deciding between the two, do check both fora for opinions, as the people here have mostly made their choice :)

i set my gf up lp on her desire, better than their stock launcher, better than sense, better than any custom launcher :p

Well yes, I agree :).

I'd also say to anyone else to try it, see if you like it, and if so buy the paid version (it's less than a beer, gives you some extra features, and developers should be supported for their efforts).

But this does remove the launcher as a reason for choosing a particular handset, unless you happen to prefer one of the manufacturers' launchers (which I'd find odd, but who am I to tell someone else what they should prefer?).

OK...
This is interesting
But, let's keep it simple here... that is a little bit too much stats hands down, don't forget that we're trying to make a suggestion to a lady here, so we might keep our geekiness in check (yeah, mine too)

So to make the conclusion:

Galaxy S:
-pros:
faster chip
brighter Super AMOLED screen, bigger too
quite good camera (5Mpix + HD Recording)
Swype keyboard (why doesn't anyone mention this? It's the one of the few side of GS Software that is good)

-cons:
UI (as in Ugly Interface)
might take some time until froyo and bug fix to comes out (seems like it's really buggy, the GS forum is filled with complains)
no flash with camera
no dedicated cloud service

Desire:
-pros:
Better UI (that's really about sums it up)
Froyo is up already
flash for camera

-cons:
the chip is slower on Eclair, but on par with GS with froyo
basically the camera doesn't do HD recording, but froyo fixed it up
AMOLED screen doesn't have the same quality with Super AMOLED, and if you're one of the unlucky one to get the newest Desire, it came with Super LCD instead which even lowers the screen vibrancy a little bit (but it doesn't drains as much battery juice as AMOLED so there's plus and minus)
No swype (but you can get app to match)
No words yet on availability into HTCSence.com cloud service

So there you have it. Comparing Desire and Galaxy is is difficult because they have different fronts they want to show off. Galaxy got better hardware, but Desire have the best software and UI than most Smartphone currently existing.
For a woman, I'd recommend Desire though, as it's friendlier to use. Just ask someone to help you upgrade it into Froyo and you're done.

Been a lurker for a while but felt I had to comment on above post. Could you be more patronising if you tried???

Us girls are are capable of being just as geeky as you guys! Comments such as "don't forget we're trying to make suggestios to a lady here" and "for a woman I'd recommend the Desire, as its friendlier to use" are pathetic.

My 18 year old son has a Galaxy S which I set up for him and I am hoping to get my hands on a Desire HD next month. My current mobile is a Nokia N900.

Rant over, back to my flower arranging lol

Are you posting from the kitchen? :D

Just kidding! ;)

lol dont worry im not very techy when it comes to phones i was a bit lost there for awhile

as for the updates does that happen just through the phone or do you have to do it online through a program?

The phone checks to see if there are any automatically.

I can't speak for the Samsung, but on the Desire you get a popup message telling you that there's an update available. It's best if you connect your phone via wifi as it can be quite a large download, then you just click OK and wait.

If you're not very techy I'd suggest you have a look at both in the shop and go for whichever you like the best, I doubt you'll be disappointed with either. Personally I much prefer the Desire, but I have a friend with a Galaxy and she loves it. I have heard that Samsung's support is very poor though.

Yes. Like I have mentioned a lot now (sorry, broken record...) you kinda need a standard phone with no branding, the branded ones dont get updated as often (or at all it seems) for example, the standard Desire has had Froyo (2.2) for about 7 weeks now, the Orange branded phones are still one 2.1! There have been about 5 updates for the stock phone, none at all for Orange phones... Its just stupid and the only major failing of the Android OS atm. But if you get a standard phone this isnt really an issue!

spot on ( says guy with unbranded Desire running 2.2;o) avoid a carrier banded version if you possibly can. Its not just the updates its all the c**p they add and the things they take off. and the bugs that their additional software adds.
best bet is to go to someone like carphone warehouse or Mobiles.co.uk (same company anyway) all their handsets are unbranded sim free.

Because you can get it on the desire too (swype).

No dedicated cloud service? what do you mean? I think Samsung have done a better job of overlaying stock apps then htc tbh. Froyo will be out very very soon. My gf has no complaints (but that might be because i'm her bf, so i make sure she has no probs!)

Desire:
-pros:
Better UI (that's really about sums it up)
Froyo is up already
flash for camera

More ram too.

but galaxy on froyo will be faster, so its best to compare froyo vs froyo.
it does do hd recording!

Tbh, i think the galaxy s is more user friendly than sense.

Sorry bout how I frame my word, mam.
I can imagine that as a mother, you must be quite an awesome techy...
(^^)b

My mistake there...
User friendliness vary from person to person, I shouldn't have made that suggestion based on my own assumption.

About cloud service from the stock apps, it's true that it's already there but Google themselves haven't sorted it down into one synchronous service. HTCSense.com have just been announced and looks promising, but until it's up (and IF Desire gets it, that's a big IF, hopefully they're not keeping it only to their 2 new products) I can't really say anything about it either. I was just saying what might loom over on the horizon... :)

About Froyo... HTC themselves has always been promising their trademark 'soon launching by end of this month' till we grow tired of it only to have us surprised that it's launching at all (at last, after something like 4-5 months?). I think Samsung might be the same with that, but with their customization wasn't as deep as Sense does, it might come out sooner, true, but it still might be 1-2 months from now (or next week).

samsung are worse that that, they can take up to a year then to announce that there are no plans at all and it will remain on the same platform with an exception to leaked trial builds.

and infact samsung never announce any of their firmware updates from one platform to a higher one.

HTC's issues are generally carrier specific

Every Samsung phone I've ever had has developed hardware faults, I will avoid Samsung like the plague from now on, Desire all the way. Plus the Galaxy looks cheap and tacky

still havent managed to get my hands on a desire to play with have to go round the shops although last time i went half of them didnt have any phones out
