Desire vs Incredible

Hello all, live in the States, have been following HTC Incredible forum for awhile and was going to jump from US Cellular to Verizon in order to get the Inc., then heard about the HTC Desire coming to USCell.

Anyone willing to help me understand the differences between the two ~ I have never owned a smartphone, I have read the specs carefully.... I know the main differences being the camera. Beyond that, any more specific or hands-on experiences would be greatly appreciated.

thx

The Incredible does sound like a marginally better phone on paper, with better camera, flash and on-board storage. However, it does come with less RAM and a slightly weaker battery.

The on-board storage is fairly meaningless, as a micro-SD card will happily work just as well, but if the camera is important to you then the Incredible is probably the better choice. If you don't use the camera, the Desire is the better option.

I seriously doubt that Incredibles camera is MUCH better, if at all. HTC is not known for great cameras. But find some reviews and compare sample shots. Dual led flash on the other hand sounds interesting if you take a lot of pictures in dark.

Incredibles storage is not awailable for apps, so it means nothing, sc card go for peanuts these days.

In my opinion, incredible is a much better looking device, all black and read.

Also, incredible has a new, superior multitouch digitizer (is that what its called?).

The Incredible - is this the phone also known as the Evo ( 4G ) ? been looking at some specs for this phone and one of the reasons I didn't go for a Desire, but the question is when and if regarding availability in the UK. THere is some debate whether the Evo will actually be launched at all in UK, as the 4G networks will not be available for some time yet.

THe other specs do look better - bigger screen?

No, Evo is different phone. And neither will e available in Europe, they are CDMA phones. We got Desire instead of Incredible, and i'm sure HTC will release a phone similar to Evo some time after it is launched in US.

Ah - ok, thanks for the clarification. Will keep looking around for a replacement to the N97 - reverted back to the N95 for now.

Yeah, n97 is pretty horrible. I think you can safely go with the desire. from what I've seen, it is an amazing phone.

thanks for the information about the Desire.... I also posted on the Incredible forum and had at least one response that indicated that they are basically the same phones save for the camera.

I have done some checking on the US Cellular plans and they seem to be less per month than Verizon. I know this doesn't mean much to you in the UK, but of course the Desire is not available here in the US yet, so..... appreciate the notes.

Its not worth getting a camera over 5MP because you will never be able to tell the difference (unless you zoom, but if you're going to zoom in that far you may as well get closer).

As for 8GB internal memory, you can sweet talk the sales man into giving you a 8GB SD card so easily from T-Mobile for the Desire. Removable memory is better too (IMO). Say you download a new app or file to the phone and it doesn't automatically register to the memory card, you can unmount and remount an SD card (you can get a free app/widget from market place to do this) on the Desire, whereas you would have to restart the Incredible.

Personally, I think the Desire is the best handset on the market.

Did I read somewhere that the 8GB of storage doesnt include apps, as in you still get teh amount of space the desire gets to install apps? I think so.

The only difference is the look and the higher camera I think.

Apparently that's coming when 2.2 FroYo is released. Still won't make any difference, Desire IS incredible (noun, not device ;)).

If thats coming with Froyo, then I would assume apps2sd is also coming, as it would mean the same thing in reality. So it still doesnt really make a different with regards to these 2 phones :p

Yeah, Mazuma seems a good bet to be honest, saves you the hassle of places like eBay and the like.

I won't be back in the UK til late summer, but without wishing to offend, woudn't be interested in the N96 , sorry.

dual LED is not very helpful. my wife has an HD2. I have the Desire. on both phones, the flash just bleaches the heck out of everything. i never use it.
battery life is a big deal though. battery life on the Desire is not great. I had a Samsung Galaxy before this and thought that had poor battery life. So if the Incredible has a smaller battery capacity (I don't know if it does) I would consider the Desire. And it feels really nice in the hand. Incredible doesn't look as sleek from the pics.

American users should know that the Desire doesn't have any US 3G frequencies. It will work over GPRS and Edge, but not anything faster.

I would personally go for the desire, the camera might be of lesser quality but I do not use the phone to take (alot) of pictures.

I also read somewhere that someone thought the incredible has better looks with the black and red.
I personally think that the incredible is really ugly, and the shape of the device is not to my liking either!

I agree. For whatever reason they made the inc square instead of rounded at the edges like the n1. Whenever i see it it reminds me of the Samsung omnia

Well that is the case for the European versions.

The Australian version by Telstra works on AT&T bands here but its super expensive (like USD$800 expensive).

I am pretty sure when it does release for US Cellular, it will work on their 3G network. Though I have never heard of US Cellular, no idea where in the US it is and no idea if they even have a 3G network.

Yes it will work on their CDMA network.
