Help Desire Z sometimes has strange keyboardshortcuts. WHY?

Hi there!

after the last update to... 2.3 I guess, my phone started having strange shortcuts on the keyboard pad.
When for instance I want to type an sms and press the g or the b or the s they take me to the applications of sms, internet or mail.
And that is definetely not what I want.
I cant get rid of it until I do a reset.

Does anyone know what this is?

Thanks!!!

Having the same issue. Tried assigning and unassigning the keys but no joy. It is only the s,g and b keys though. Really annoying

I have this too, its happened a few times since the upgrade to 2.3.3.

What I have found, is that if you close the phone and use the virtual-keyboard, its completely fine.

I initially thought it was Handcent playing up, but I tried it with Messages (stock) too, with the same result.

Very odd, but it seems it's a hard-keyboard issue, though its a random issue, as I have just sent a text with no issue at all.

Pete

Since updating to 2.3.3 five days ago I now have slideout keyboard shortcuts as below:

e key launches email
g key launches gmail app
s key launches SMS
b key launches web browser

While logical, these shortcuts cannot be managed!

Anyone know how to disable them? Pressing and holding does not work. Configuration through settings does not show them as enabled.

Hardware keyboard is nearly useless without these keys. C'Mon Google and HTC, WTF?

Confirmed, power off and battery out seems to solve this glitch. Hopefully it will not return.

Thanks for the tip zzrgraeme1!

Rebooted a few times, only to see the issue return ... however, the battery out tip has worked a treat. Nice one.

Its never really off until the battery is out.

Pete :D

Started doing it again this morning ... :(

Further to this, I posted on to the HTC UK Facebook page the following:

"Hi, since my Desire Z was updated OTA with 2.3.3, the hardware keyboard is not working correctly. It seems that when typing texts or emails, certain keys are acting like shortcuts (for example, pressing "g" opens email, "b" opens the browser, etc). Its making the keyboard unusable. Is there a hotfix/update in the works to sort this out? Readign various online forums, its not just me ..."

The UK Android Centre (whoever they are) posted a response:

"if i was you i would do a factory reset, as 2.3 was a big update for a lot of htc phones"

A Factory Reset is something I have never considered. What does it entail? What would I lose?

I love my Desire Z, I just want it to work as it did :o

Pete

IGNORE MY LAST POST, I DON'T NEED A FACTORY RESET, I HAVE FIXED IT.

Sorry for shouting ;)

I have just been looking into how to do a factory reset on another forum and stumbled onto the fix ...

  • Settings
  • Applications
  • Quick Launch
  • Long press on any shortcut to disable

I don't use keyboard shortcuts (apart from the two dedicated keys), so I won't miss them anyway.

Hope this helps :D

Pete

I've tried all those to get rid of them but still not working. And I use the keyboard due to my hands. Can anyone help me, thanks
