Root DETAILED Leak Root Tutorial

DO NOT UNZIP. File that you put on your phone. Go to you Tools folder in SDK and hold shift then right click. There should be an option to run command here. when you do that do these commands. adb devices. you should see your device. If you dont then something is wrong with SDK.

Okay.. I swear I read through this entire thread at least 2 times and I have some questions that I don't think I saw addressed. Anyway..

My initial plan is to just root my stock eris 2.1 ota. I really don't wanna throw a rom on there right now but just root and flash the engtools and overclock update.

So my concerns are this... My device is recognized when I use ADB but HTC SYNCH does not recognize my phone. Could this cause me problems during the process? I just can't get HTC SYNCH to recognize my phone.

Next concern.. do I need to get the eng tools and overclock update to my sd card on the phone? If so, how can I do that since I can't synch? When I try to mount my phone it does says it can't find my phone. Also, do they stay zipped or extracted?

I'm on XP.. Thank all you guys very much for any assistance.

If ADB recognizes your phone that is all that matters

Thank you for the quick answers. Very eager to get my root on. But do I need to copy the engtools and overclock files to my sd card or can I just run them from the sdk tools directory? Sorry if I'm not understanding..

Can you tell us a little more info?

Are you trying to transfer a file via mounting your phone as a disk drive or via adb? If abd, then make sure that you are set to 'charge-only' and 'usb debugging'.

Via the disk drive. My phone doesn't show up as a device on the phone at all. It looks like Midnight Assassin was having the same trouble, albeit with kaosfroyo instead of Evil Eris 3. I know I could just directly download it online, but never being able to mount my phone to my computer again would really suck.

I could also try transferring the file via Terminal (usb debugging mode does still work), but I'm a little leery because that's not always my strongest suit. And again, never being able to traditionally mount my phone again would be a real pain. Anyone else encountered this problem and found a workaround?

Are you certain you've downloaded the hack-v4.zip and placed the extracted contents into your "tools" folder of the SDK?

I sure did. adb recognizes my device, but then command not found. Is there anything I need to do with Hack-v4.zip after it's extracted and placed in the tools folder?

Not to my knowledge. Did you take a look at step#9? "9. If you get “adb: command not found, try “ sh runinlinuxadb.sh “.

I'm reaching here, as I'm not terribly familiar with Mac.

*Edit* I see you have tried step #9.

If you navigate to sdk/android-sdk-86_mac/tools (or whatever you titled the directories), what is in that directory?

I put it in applications. That directory contains add ons, platform, sdk readme, and tools.

There is a folder for "tools"? What is contained in that folder? Another thought is if you have your SDK and the hack sitting in a folder named "applications", I would think you would have to adjust your command to account for that.

applications/sdk/android-sdk-86_mac ? (man I hope a Mac type chimes in soon, I feel like I'm digging myself into a hole).

*EDIT* I should know better than to meddle with such things. :o

I don't know if this matters, but on my Mac...when I un-zipped hack-v4.zip in my tools folder, it made another folder called hack-v4. I copied the files in that folder directly into to tools folder.

Could that be a problem??

Yes that could be a problem, make sure you move the files from the folder thats created into the tools folder

I used the terminal window to have the phone boot into recovery. But when i get to the recovery screen, my phone will not scroll down to backup/restore and therefore i cannot select it and continue to select NAND backup. Any suggestions?

Your trackball will not scroll?

well i just did a little observing and it appears that my trackball works in all directions besides down. looks like ill be going up to verizon.

That seems to have been the problem. Thanks all!
