Help DHD will not format a new SD card

Teufel

Newbie
Hi everyone,

I recently bought a new Sandisk 32Gb Class 4 Micro-SD card for my DHD, however when I put it in the DHD it is recognized as a blank card and DHD asks to format it. If I click "Format" there is a progress circle continuously running but he card is not getting formatted.

The Sandisk card is original and have bought it from a Sandisk original reseller, also checked on the net for a real cards logo placement and "made in .." also checked the serial number.

The card when put in a card reader asks to format the card but a windows PC will always format it to NTFS or FAT32, which I guess is not understood by the DHD. So is there a way to format this new card for me to use it in the DHD? Why is the DHD not able to format this card?

Thanks

FAT32 is recognisable by the DHD, it's the recommended file system so it should be ok. I've not used the phone itself to format, but I don't think it's a proper format, it just wipes any data on there as opposed to writing a file system (can't confirm, but I do recall reading that somewhere).

It doesn't sound like the card is fake, but it could well be faulty? Does Windows recognise the card with no problems and can read/write data from it?

Thanks El Presidente,

When I put the card in the card reader it asks me to format it, however the options being only FAT and NTFS I did not go ahead. I will try to format it with FAT32 and see what happens in the DHD

Ok ... tried that and the format window is showing the incorrect size for the micro SD card. The size shown is 30.6 MB instead of GB!!! ... pic attached

tried the utility ... it first says "please insert disk" and on cancelling that message says "Error accessing the target" on the utility window under the drive letter

Does this mean the card is faulty and needs to be returned (hopefully can be)

Have you actually tried to format? h2testw won't read the card if it isn't formatted. Select FAT32, attempt to format and see if that makes a difference?

If it won't, I suspect the card is faulty and would need to be returned. If it's an authorised seller, you should have no problems getting a refund/replacement.

Does not allow me to format ... gave an error and now it gives giving the insert disc error, looks like the card is faulty and I need to return it.

Got the card replaced from the reseller .. got a new 32GB MicroSD card ... :-)

I am not even going to open the packing unless someone tells me the exact procedure to transfer data from my card to this new card.

I guess there are two methods, both have the same first step i.e. to take a copy of the original card on your computer (making sure that the hidden folders is unchecked before copying data from the card to the computer)

1) One is to format the new card by putting it in the phone and letting it do the format and then transferring all the copied data from the computer back to the new card

2) Format the card in windows with FAT and then put it in the phone and then copy data to the card from the computer.

Not sure what would be the better option, any help is really appreciated as I don't think they will give m another new card free in case I brick this one ... :-)

That's what I would do. Use FAT32 - not FAT.

True .. my bad ... but if you check the snapshot I had posted earlier in Windows 7 it shows up as FAT (Default) instead of FAT32 in earlier versions of Windows ... :-)

But the question still stands which one is the better option 1) Put direct in phone or 2) First format in Windows and then in phone

When I had a HTC Hero I upgraded the supplied 2GB card to an 8GB Card. I used my PC and a card reader and copied everything from the 2GB card to the PC. The 8GB card was already formatted so I just copied the lot back to the 8GB card and put that in the phone.

It came like that out of the box formatted to FAT32

In my case I have been asked to format it in both, the phone as well as in the card reader. The phone format did not do anything, whereas the card reader gave errors due to card being faulty
