Root Diagnosing cause of HTC Desire boot loop

Hi folks

I'm having a problem getting my HTC Desire to boot. It starts normally showing the "O2 Welcome" splash, but after a long pause it just reboots. It then proceeds to the ClockwordMod Recovery 2.5.0.7.

History of problem

Problems started shortly after rooting my phone with instructions "[Guide]ROOTING HTC android 2.2 or lower with unrEVOked - Windows (updated 11th November 2011)". The rooting process itself went well, (unrEVOked reported a triumph!) and I managed to install a couple of root apps successfully and use them afterwards. The problems started when I tried to do a Nandroid backup.

The backup itself seemed to run ok, except the phone reported low disk space (at around 90MB). However, since rebooting, I haven't been able to get back into the OS. I saw some posts about Android not booting if there's too little space on the device so I tried clearing down the sdcard and moving the backup off the device but this didn't help.

What do I do now?!

I'm posting as I've spent hours trying to diagnose what the problem is but to no avail. When the phone boots, all I can see is the O2 splash screen, and here's no on-screen log of what's happening. What tools / logs can I use to figure out what is actually going wrong here? I couldn't find any actual boot logs anywhere. (I tried using dmesg via adb shell but couldn't see anything obvious in here. e.g. kernel panic).

Sorry to be so vague, but I haven't actually seen any specific errors in any boot logs so it's difficult to say more. If someone could point me towards some diagnostic tools I could post more.

This is a really easy fix. Infact, its in our root faq (which we suggest you,read). However ill give you this one. ;)

Restore the backup
 
Thanks for your really quick reply SUroot, unfortunately I already tried this and it is still stuck in the bootloop. Perhaps it didn't backup properly because it was low on space..?

What should I try next?
 
Hmmm. If your backup is incomplete, the only other thing you can do is flash a rom. When you next come to take a backup, do ensure that you have enough space.

You could try an advanced restore of boot and system only.
 
Its even in teh guide he followed. I always tend to assume they followed the guide correctly. I hope so :(

Although, maybe I dont as its an even easier fix then...
 
Erase size is 20000. What rom would be appropriate for re-flashing? I already tried installing the gingerbread update (I was on Froyo) using a upgrade.zip but that didn't seem to have any effect.

Incidentally, do you have any tips for diagnosing what the actual problem is here? Are there any boot logs I could use to find out what the underlying error might be?

I would recommend one that is close to what you had as possible.

If it was froyo, I would suggest using teppic74's rooted stock froyo.
 
Just looking at [ROM] [20/06] Pre-rooted Stock Froyo (2.29.405.5) [Optional mods] on XDA (sorry can't post link!). I notice the basic 2.10.405.2 includes the Radio ROM. Does this mean I have to flash the Radio as well? Just want to be a bit cautious here since the FAQ says Radio flashing is risky...

Sry, just one more question. Given that my phone is O2 branded, is it likely I'll need a goldcard to install that stock Froyo?

I notice in the rooting FAQ, it says:

The Android 2.3.3 RUU from htcdev.com debrands

If i install a 2.3.3 stock instead, can I assume I won't need a goldcard?

you are already rooted, you need not be concerned by that
The branding has nothing to do with it. you only need to be concerned about the branding if you are trying to restore the device to box condition using an RUU
in this case you are not doing and have no need to
 
Just to let you know, the teppic74 rom you suggested worked fine, so I now have a working phone again! :D I even got cheeky and upgraded to gingerbread.
