Differences between .tar and .zip kernel files

Hawker

Android Expert
I've been doing quite a few kernel installs recently, almost all in .zip format, flashable through CWM.

Now I'm dabbling with Ragemod, and one of their versions of this kernel is in .tar format, so this must be done either through Odin, or using chainfires new utility which I've not yet tried yet.

I've looked at both file formats, and the .tar ONLY contains the zImage file
the .zip contains the zImage with META-INF\com\google\android folder and within here there are 2 files, update-binary and updater-script

Am I correct in thinking, that if I want to create a .zip file from a .tar, then I just need a similar kernel .zip file, and replace the zImage file with the zImage file contained in the .tar?

Edit.
I can confirm this is the case.
For example, I had a Ragemod v1-T30.tar and a Ragemod v1.1b.zip
I replaced the zImage file in the .zip with the one in the .tar, and I now have a flashable .zip file with the kernel contained in the .tar.

Another way of flashing TAR-archived kernels is to extract the zImage to your handset and use CWM's "Flash kernel" option. It's good to have choices. :)
