Help Differences between Wifi and 'Wifi Direct'

you want to use standard wifi when you are usually roaming on your job or home network, just as you have done with earlier handsets.

Wi-Fi Direct allows Android 4.0 (API level 14) or later devices with the appropriate hardware to connect directly to each other via Wi-Fi without an intermediate access point. Ok EarlyMon

My wife and I both have EvoLTE's. While messing around with them, I turned on WiFi Direct on both and put them to search for each other. They connected. However, both phones showed the same ID- Android_a5db. When I opened my gallery to transfer a pic from one to the other, there was no "Wifi Direct selection in "Share". Is the "WiFi Direct" feature not for sharing? Can you advise?

when both devices are turned on, they each determine which is going to be the host, or Access point. once that is figured out, the other device can connect to it and use its network.

I posted some links up top, but here is another one. This tech is new so one does need to spend a little time smoking over what this does and how one can benefit.

I'm surprised there's so little talk about this feature so far. It's my understanding that this should enable us to mirror our devices to wifi direct capable tvs, yes? I don't have one, and I thought I could use my PS3, but apparently the ps3 does not support wifi direct, and I don't have anything that does in order to test this out...

I'd really like to be able to use this to stream say yahoo screen from my phone and have it displayed on my tv. has anybody tried mirroring to a wifi capable television?
 
The media link is what you are looking for.

Android just added this a few months ago.. The masses know close to zero about this technology. Give it time.

I'll test this out tonight with some toys at home and post a reply.
 
you are correct! that is exactly what I want. it requires a media link hd dongle though. which is fine, 60 bucks whatever. it's just that all the videos of nexus devices syncing together via wifi direct show the connected device mirroring the host device, so I assume this means a wifi direct capable television should be able to do the same, without the dongle, yes?
 
I have a WIDI capable TV. When I am looking at a video or picture in my gallery I can select more then select player and see the TV. When I select the TV, what is on my phone immediately overrides what is playing on the TV and displays perfectly including sound.

I don't see this as the OP' question. I believe that will take some application development.

right, I believe that's the built in dlna, though, no? meaning it only works from within the HTC media apps. the videos demoing wifi direct show full mirroring, not just serving media content that's stored locally on the device
 
Bumpity Bump...Looking for an answer here.
There's no info in the HTC mobile guide regarding Wifi direct and very little reference elsewhere.
I can connect my TV and my phone but that's it...no share option. When i get home tonight i'm gonna try media share and see if that gives me an option.
Anyone btdt? The OG Evo board was much more active but i guess that's to be expected given the options available today. Tia.
 
Can I achieve a full-duplex (Bi Directional) communication between two or more Android devices using WiFiDirect.?
Data to be communicated is just a string...
