Help Different Ringtones for numbers not from contacts

endaugust

Lurker
How would I go about setting a ring tone for numbers that are not in my contacts? For example, any calls that come from numbers that are in my contacts would ring a certain way, and numbers that are not from my contacts ring differently? I get solicitors calls often and I don't want to rush to the phone to get it.

I think you can only set specific ringtones for specific contacts. You can set your standard call as a ringtone, but that won't indicate which ones are unsolicited or not.

time consuming, but you can accomplish this.

1. go to menu.settings.sound.phone ringtone from here set up the ringer for the calls YOU DON"T want to rush to. You could also set this to silent..then only people in your contacts list will ring.

now go to people, and then go through each individual contact setting up a custom ringtone for each. it can be the same ringtone, or it can be different that is up to you. as long as it isn't the same as what you set in step one you will know the difference.

another tip...when you get these unsolicited calls, save the number to your contacts as the name "unknown" . do it each time and occasionally go in and merge/link the all of these "unknown" contacts. set them to ignore them by using the "send to voicemail" feature. your phone never rings..they just go straight to voicemail.

there is an app out there called privacy star something or another that has many many call features. if you are getting a ton of these types of calls you might check into that app

thanks, Mr. Ed.

yes, that is time-consuming. i have hundreds of contacts. not about to go to each and set a ringtone for it.

i have already implemented your "another tip" suggestion, saving #'s to a contact. i even let that go straight to voicemail.

but there's always a new one that pops up. these solicitors are not going to call from the same number all the time.

this should be a very simple feature. one ringtone for #s from contacts. one ringtone for numbers that are not. what's so hard about this, right? should be added as standard for the next android update.

Well.. I understand what you are saying....but it is already there...just not by the method you wish it to be. I have it set up by a combination of both methods....but have a different ringtone for each contact. I always know who is calling without having to look at the phone.

Check into privacy star. From what I understand it gives you a slew of options...and remember, just because android doesn't do something out of the box, its try value is that it is so open....someone most likely makes an app that does what you are looking for almost every time

i know the method you pointed out. it's tedious having to do that. it's fine if you have a small contact list, but when you have hundreds. and every time you add a new contact, you have to remember to set a ring tone for it.

thanks for referring privacy star. you have to pay. and i refuse to pay for something so simple. :)

there are other free apps out there (yes, i know android is very open). and some are very cool and i've downloaded them, but they are more keen to block calls, i.e. not let them ring at all and go straight to VM or hang up on them, which is a little too absolute. sometimes i do want to receive calls from new business people that I have yet added to the contact list. all i want is just a different ring tone for people who are not in my contacts (without having to go too much trouble).

was just wondering if android have this, what should be native, feature.

thanks for confirming that it doesn't. still love you android. :)
