'Dillo Hills [Development]

Fex, you say that rendering the scene in 3d is less strainious on the system.... so why not make Dillo Hills 3d? :D Make the hills 3d, the clouds too, but keep the character 2d and the background. Now that would make an interesting looking game. :D

Hahah, that's actually a pretty awesome idea - one that may or may not be on the wishlist for the sequel! ;D

Everyone on the team is very excited about the new Molehill API coming to AIR soon - hopefully this summer. I would love to see how well it performs in the sequel. :D

This game runs HORRIBLY on my Droid X running Liberty 2.0.
My phone is overclocked to 1.2ghz with the standard voltages and set on priority clocking.
3D games...$10 games...Multi-touch+Accelerometer controlled games...run flawlessly.

This 2D pile of shit game runs like I'm using a rotary phone from the 60's.

I'm sorry...but there is no reason this game should not run wonderfully on my phone. OMG...in JULY my phone is obsolete since it's a year old...(No, Fex...no...)
The original Droid...the one released in ****ing 2009...
Can play Dungeon Defenders if you overclock your phone.
Dungeon Defenders is graphic intensive.

I do agree with this:/ sorry fex
Fix that shit before you release these cute new features you have planned.
If we're only able to play your game on a goddamn XOOM or Atrix currently...then it should be restricted in the market from our view and advertised as such.
It's shit shit shit. And I'm disappointed disappointed disappointed.

I do agree with this... sorry fex:/

aww sequel is too far away.. me want 3d looking hills now ;)

Seriously though looking forward to what's in store.

The game does need some serious performance boosts like mentioned 1000 times.

Fex, just wanted to say zone 2 and 3 run pretty well on high graphics on my evo, which is almost a yr old, but still runs a 1 gigahertz processor, which is still pretty good these days. I just had 1 question, could u change the hills back to the original way they were?

This kills my battery if I leave it paused and lock my phone. Don't know if that can be fixed but I'm just putting it out there :). Great game though, even though I gotta play it on low settings but I don't care :D

I understand that technology moves quickly -- but developing for the latest < 6 months of phones is really crippling your game. I bought your game, ENJOY your game (turning a blind eye to lag on a 1GHz Captivate) and support your work. However, if I can run full-scale Call-of-Duty-type games with real-time online multiplayer interaction with less lag than medium settings on a side-scroller, you've got too much overhead.
And I'm sure all these other developers of such intensely detailed games have about 20+ times more people working on it -- I'm not comparing your game in terms of quality or level of detail. I'm saying that your response to people's complaints about performance seem a little dishonest.
I understand you making a case for the difficulties of 2D rendering, but I would appreciate the honesty of, "I am choosing not to develop this game for phones older than 6 months," rather than, "your phone is incapable and out-dated."

I think a lot of people don't realize that the reason Dillo Hills doesn't run all that well on most "high end" phones is simply... adobe air. If this was a native 2D java app, it would run so much better. Being someone that doesn't program in Java for video games, I understand how hard that would be to learn. I've contemplating making use of my programming skills in various adobe languages to profit from android... but I don't think it's a very well optimized platform for mobile yet. I'm impressed Dillo Hills runs as well as it does, honestly.

i lov dillo hills downloaded for my htc desire hd(inspire 4g in america) real good i was wondering fex theres a really good game called fastball look at the game play and its free on ipod its really addicting i was wondering if there was a way u cud make it and by the way have u made alot of money?????

Folks - please.

It's come up several times, but I've decided to speak up.

Asking someone in public how much money they make is not terribly polite, regardless of motive, intention or anything else.

That's pretty much true whether it's this forum, another forum, or a guy on the street.

Thanks. ;)

I agree, it's AIR thats causing the bad performace, but program in java? Thats almost as bad. :p Instead you can develop apps/games in native code with C/C++ in the Android NDK, then you get the performace you want. I never even tried AIR, so I dont know how or what language programs is writtin in, probably Flash with some scripts and shit. Anyway, that unfortunately makes it impossible to "port" to native code, and probably requires total rewrite of the game. Thats alot of work. Hopefully though, they make the next game without AIR. And yeah, it's probalby more work, but damn it'll be SO much better!

Java apps run within the Dalvik Virtual Machine, but recently the Android SDK was widened to allow c/c++ app development. The former compiles into bytecode (an intermediate form) while the latter compiles to native code.

... your seriously going to try to make the sequel on AIR? Fex, barely any phones can run game on its full capacity because of AIR. I know you say 1 year is a long time for a phone, but I don't buy it. My Incredible is still pretty much as fast as it was when I got it, and I NEVER have experienced lag or incompatibility on ANY app/game up until now. I realize that it is tough to accept that the game (perhaps to no fault of your own) isn't a total success, but at least give it to us straight up, and maybe even try and fix the multitude of problems that more than half of us have been experiencing.
I'm not trying to hate, just offer constructive criticism. And this is in no way meant to personally attack or discourage you, to the contrary, I'm just trying to help you make dillo hills a great game!

Ditch adobe air...My nexus one can run nova (from gameloft), dungeon defenders (lower settings), but yet it lags more on this basic 2d game. I like the concept of the game, just it's virtually unplayable for me.

But a McDouble only lasts a few minutes (if you nibble at it). You can play Dillo Hills as many times as you want! :p
It's basically unplayable for me... and probably him too. So yeah I would rather have some food than a laggy game with developer has seemed to drop off the face of the earth taking his updates with him.

Ah, completely understandable at that point then! :(

Hopefully it's just a minor setback and he'll get a fix out soon!
