DINC2 after 28 June?

RBEmerson

Android Enthusiast
With the change in VZW plans after the 28th, whose thinking about changes from the DINC2 to...?

For myself, whatever change I make must include GSM support for my trips to Euro-land. Right now, the VZW site offers exactly one GSM Droid phone and it ain't an HTC phone - Droid Pro :eviltongue:

Realistically I will be sticking with the DInc2 for a while and buying my next phone at full price or craigslist/swappa price to keep my unlimited data. Nothing out right now floats my boat.

I was interested in a nice looking little phone called the Incredible 4G but, looks like it is just a rumor...;)
With nothing konfirmed...LOL!

Well, when I talked to a VZW rep Friday (15 June), he said that an "Incredible 3" was in the pipeline. No ETA for it but the guess is sometime in late summer. This may well be the Incredible 4G referenced above.

I pre-ordered the GSIII. Sad to leave HTC (all my smart phones to date have been HTC) and the Inc2, but wanted a larger screen, faster processor, and more internal memory.

+1... I got my Inc 2 about a week ago when my Org Inc died finally. The Inc 2 is a very nice phone. The only compliant I have with it thus far is it does not get as good of reception as my Org Inc up in Northern WI on my land. I was there all weekend and places my Org Inc would get a signal, my Inc 2 will not. But I will hang onto this phone as long as needed. The only phone that Verizon has that would interest me is the Inc 4G, but this phone seems to be a myth.

What with the new storage space problem (the DINC2 says more phone storage is being used than is really in use, resulting on a "Low on space" warning - HTC and VZW acknowledge the problem exists, but haven't produced a fix), memories of how long it took to fix the clock app and widget problem (touch the HTC clock and nothing happens instead of opening the clock app to see a timer, alarm clock, etc.), and dissatisfaction with the DINC2's antennas (generally poor "ears" - problems with BT being unable to maintain reliable contact with a BlueAnt Q2 headset), along with the desire to keep my present unlimited VZW contract as long as possible, I've stepped over to the dark side and now own a Razr Maxx.

Note I say "own". At the moment, it's unactivated and will stay that way until I return from a two week trip to Europe. The Razr Maxx won't be GSM capable until sometime in July or August and a GSM-capable phone is a must. The DINC2 remains in service until I return from "GSM-land".

RBEmerson, I bought a Inc2 of craigslist a couple weeks ago and have noticed both these issues. My phone says the software is up to date, but I still do not see the clock app in the app drawer? What are you referencing as the "fix"..? I have also noticed the my Org Inc did get better signals in areas. Funny how my wife's basic phone always has a signal even when my nice fancy expensive smart phone has none...!!

Uh, oh... The only fix I'm aware of is an OTA fix pushed by VZW. FWIW, I'm up to the same rev. number (this is the one from the latest OTA update, the one fixing a Facebook issue). The clock app is alive and well on my DINC2.

Now it's possible the PO (Previous Owner) missed the update that addressed the clock app and the subsequent updates don't include that fix. I have no idea what is included in any particular update - I'll let those with more information speak to that point.

About the only thing I can think of is to do a factory data reset and hope the phone demands enough updates to address the issue. A) this is only a wild guess and B) this will wipe out all added apps, personal data, etc. not backed up somewhere. And it may do nothing to fix the problem. Or maybe it will... who knows? :dontknow:

As to the antenna issue, if there is any fix for it, I've never seen it or even heard about it. It is what it is. :(

Don't forget rooting. That is my preferred method to fix the clock issue... which I never had because I rooted right away.:p

After root, you can just install andyBONESTOCK or GBS for the latest Stock Gingerbread update (besides the useless one that just came out).

Then there are a bunch of other great ROMs worth trying too.

The previous owner did do a factory reset I believe. The update I downloaded I was not prompted for, I did a setting, check software update...

I had my Org Inc rooted and found all I ever did was install a stock GB Rom and run it. It was always what I just preferred, so as of right now I just haven't bothered to root this phone. Maybe I will have to. I used Widgetsoid to get a shortcut to the clock app. It works for now.

Do you know if there is somewhere you can go do download updates from HTC\Verizon and run them manually? Just curious. I know there are no antenna fixes, just wierd they make an update to the Org Inc and can't get the phone to have the same reception or better... That i don't get...

I left rooting out intentionally. IMHO, if the problem is so egregious or HTC is so intractable as to not have a fix for an obvious problem, it's time to re-think the whole project and not just dive off into rooting and all that seems to entail.

Past that, see my .sig for my take on the whole mess...

It seems strange that I get the latest update and it doesn't include the previous updates or the previous updates weren't install first... I only plan to use this phone until the Inc 4G comes out. I could try the factory reset, but I don't think the factory reset would roll back the updates? It really isn't that big of a deal, just curious. I use that clock app all the time.

Update: I called Verizon customer support about this today and they said if you take your phone into a Verizon store, their tech support there can install previous OTA updates. So I am going to try that today or tomorrow.

Update 2: I stopped at the Verizon store and they said they have no ability to install a previous OTA... Wish these people would get their acts straight.

I am beginning to agree with ya. I should not have to root my phone to fix something as simple as the STOCK HTC Clock App. I pay good money for these phones and good money to use them. I hate Apple, but I am really starting to consider an iPhone. Family I know that have iPhones never have these issues you see with Android. I don't know if I would actually pull the trigger on an iPhone, but things like this make is very tempting...

While obviously I agree that rooting just to make VZW-supplied apps work is wrong, IMHO, jumping into bed with Apple brings its own bundle of surprises. They may not be the same problems (I hope not!!); Apple has a very strong grip on their products and what they can and cannot do. Case in point, I regularly consult NOAA weather radar directly. Forget that with an iPhone or iPad - NOAA uses Flash for its presentation of the data and Apple doesn't support Flash.

Yeah, it's kinda like jumping out of the frying pan and onto the skillet...
