Man, you guys must all be new to the LG bandwagon. This has been the way since the G3's granddaddy the Optimus G. The level the slider is set to while automatic brightness is checked basically sets the maximum brightness the phone will realize under bright conditions.

I'm new to LG, but are you sure that's how it works? If I have auto at 50%, the max brightness I'm ever going to hit is 50%? I don't think so.
Seems to be that when on auto, the slider just sets the scale a little higher or a little lower. I have it on around 50% or 60% and it's plenty bright when I go out in direct sun.
There any documentation or other threads (even for older phones) with more about this? I'm very interested in understanding this more.

From what I can tell. Whatever % you set it on, that is what it is for your general viewing. If you're in a bright area, it will automatically make the screen brighter to compensate the brightness of your surrounding.
It was like this on my Samsung S3 also and I think my HTC Thunderbolt

It seems to me that when on auto mode, the slider just acts as an adjustment on the auto setting...like an offset.
If that's the way it truly works then I think it's an awesome feature actually. So instead of being stuck with the auto setting or complete manual control...you can actually fine tune the auto setting to your personal preference. So if the normal auto brightness levels tend to be a little too dark for you then you adjust the slider to give you a little brighter bias for all auto levels. And if the auto levels tend to be too bright for you then you can adjust the slider down to put a negative bias on the auto levels.
At least this is the way I hope it works...

Good way to describe it. I think it's what you said, but I've seen people give answers that are all over the place as to how far it works.
Apparently, it worked the same on other LG phones, yet there's very little discussion about this and no one seems to know for sure.
Look at what the person above said about it being the max brightness the phone can go to. That makes no sense. Wonder why there's so much confusion over this.

On any % setting when auto brightness is checked, the screen doesn't change in direct sunlight (it's as bright as it can go). So it's not a maximum setting for sure. It has to be a minimum setting of some sort but a setting of 100% doesn't give you all of the brightness that the display can produce when in low lighting. We've all used auto brightness before when the lowest brightness setting is too low for your liking. This slider seems to fix that problem. I've been trying to figure out for a few days and that's the best explanation I can come up with. I think the 100% is just the highest "low" auto brightness setting you can specify in automatic brightness mode.
Damn that sounds confusing but kind of makes sense to me LOL!

My original post (and the reason I started this thread) explained exactly this.
The slider can move up and down and only makes small adjustments (when the auto-brightness box is toggled). The slider can move up and down and makes bigger adjustments (when the auto-brightness box is not toggled), which includes the screen getting brighter than 100% (w/ auto-brightness toggled).
