Help Display not turning on.

My EVO's display will not turn back on with the power button. To get the display back on I have to remove the battery and put it back in and turn it on. At first I thought the phone was turning off but if the display is off and I plug it in, it comes on immediately. This behavior happens when it is plugged in as well. In that case when I unplug it it comes back on.

Holding the power button down (to turn it off) does nothing. Any ideas?

So now I'm thinking its the power button. It seems unresponsive to powering down when the display is on. Anybody else seen this or had theres go bad? Is this a possible software problem? It's not been dropped or bumped?

I have seen a few posts regarding bad power buttons. do you have a repair store near you?

My first thought would have been a bad power button, too, but you're saying if the phone is off, you can turn it back on by pressing the power button, correct?

No. I have never turned it back on with the power button. It automatically reboots when I put the battery back in thankfully. However a couple of times the shutdown window has been up when I pulled it out of my pocket. No idea how. Certainly can't be reproduced with the power button.

I have a few repair stores nearby. A couple questions regarding that. I will need to unroot before taking it to the store correct? Should I uninstall root apps too? Is there a touchscreen button option to power off? I would think I would need a proper shutdown option during the unrooting.

Anybody who's taken their phone back, will they want to to a factory reset in store before they offer a replacement? Thanks for the help.

So I started looking into the prospect of unrooting and realized I needed the power button to get into the bootloader. So after a brief moment of panic I tried holding down the down button and power button when I inserted the battery and it worked, the bootloader came up. So it seems the power button press was recognized.

So I used the reboot option in the bootloader and powered back on. Now the power button works. Strange. Is there a difference between rebooting in the bootloader vs a regular reboot, more like a soft reset?

This really seems to indicate a software problem.

This is my first EVO and first time posting.
I think somewhere in the settings, your going to find, that the LCD backlite, is suppose to turns off automatically, (it suppose to go dim to conserve power.). But, after a few more minutes of inactivity, the phone screen goes completely black, but the phone remains on. I'd guess you looking at a mis-settings issue, or, a bug in the OS, where it's missing the dimming step, and just going to black.

It might also help to know which software and version information, your running to track this down.

Update:
I tried to repair mine, with 2 (so called) "Repair Kits", from eBay sellers.
Neither worked, so, on the 3rd try, I found a seller who had a "New", complete LCD, Digitizer & front Bezel (plastic still covering the front & buttons).
It worked, but, at first the color was not quite right.
The bottom line is, that it could also be a connector problem, that was the issue with the color. The connector's flip tab that holds the cable in place was broken, and not pushing the flex cable up to make proper contact inside the connector. This is ZIF (zero insertion force) or, LIF (Light insertion force) FFC style socket. We could really use a part number, or access to this, as a repair part. Because, this too, could also be the reason the Backlight doesn't work.

I managed to wedge the cable, so it works proper again.
But, I really want to replace this socket as soon as possible, without buying another dead EVO..
So, I've finally got a very expensive, But, Working EVO 4G again.

I also went ahead and tore apart the old LCD to get to the LED's used as the backlight, and found 1 was open. The 8 LED's, are a series fed string. It takes 3v DC to lite one up, so it would take around 24 v DC to light all 8.
For the fun of it, I used 6 of the old LED's, and made a flashlight, using a 3 x 3 (series/ parallel) array , a piece of polished Lexan plastic, and a 9 v battery. It's very bright!!!

hayj,
You could check the power button, if it's broke loose from the board, re-soldering it is not too hard, just watch the position.
If it's physically broken, the only place I know to get another one, is a broken HTC ERIS, it uses the same switch, for volume control.

My phone kept rebooting itself after I updated to Gingerbread. I am not rooted. The last time it rebooted, it won't turn back on. I get to the white screen that says HTC EVO 4G and there is some kind of vibrate and then it goes completely dead again. I'm freaking out! I don't want to do a factory reset.

I got what sounds like the same thing. It does turn back on on occassion, but sometimes I will hit the screen on button several times and nothing will happen.

Can you re-post if you take it to a repair store to fix the switch, or whatever they say is the problem.

I'd rather not be without my phone for a day while they look at it, so I'd be interested to see what your results are.

Thanks.
