Help Do I have to install apps one by one? Sprint tech suggests so

Hey All...

So I'm now on my 4th HTC Evo LTE- the first one could not open text messages so they had to replace it- that was on day 1. My next phone had an issue with the power button being compressed down causing the phone to constantly reset itself- so it had to be replaced. Phone 3 started having issues with data connectivity- GPS/Internet/text messages- all had issues. So they replaced it. The guy at teh sprint store told me to install only 1 app per week- that likely the root of this recent problem was an app- and to just install one per week and make sure it works ok. But, he said the issues can also come when an app updates- that sometimes can cause an app to make a phone not act as it should.

What's the consensus in here? Just go ahead and install the apps i want or follow his advice?

One app or one update per week - memory of the LTEvo would not be taxed. However, you would not have many apps on the phone - Why have a powerful "Smart Phone" if you cannot put [or limit the] apps on it.

Because not all apps play nice.

You will see many of us on multiple forums suggest the exact same thing the Sprint tech did (including me, well before getting hired by Sprint)

When you have an android user experiencing multiple issues fairly often and can't find anything wrong with the phone, its typically a rogue app (or could be)

In those cases yeah, install an app and watch for issues for a bit prior to installing another. Simple variable control

That's complete bunk.

It's not how many apps you install, it's which apps you install. A bad app is going to give you problems whether you install 1 a week or 50. You just have to do it a few at a time until you see which one is giving you the headache. A factory reset will get you backl to square one while you figure it out.

Lol, no where did he indicate that the quantity and frequency were the issue ....in turn you suggested exactly what the tech and many others would suggest

The suggestions so far are good and should result in a near 100% chance of resolving your problem.

However. I suggest trying a shortcut.

1) Go download "permission explorer" from the market.

2) Run it and select the "permissions" tab, then scroll don until you see "change wifi state", click on it, then write a list of those apps. Then go back and look for the permission "change network state", click it, and add those to your list.

3) Uninstall those apps

4) do a hard reset (hold down your power button for 10 seconds)

5) turn your phone back on, use it normally for a day or two, and see if you still have those network issues.

If there are no issues, then start reinstalling them one at a time.

Good luck!
