Help Do I need to root my Desire?

Had my Desire now for 3 months, I have read about all the great things you can do with the phone, especially when rooted (also mindful of the pitfalls).

My phone is constantly saying 'memory low' so I need to delete apps etc and fiddle about to get anything new.

Is Rooting a justifiable option?

Also, can you get new icons for the dockbar of Go EX Launcher?

Memory remains one of the most appealing reasons to root for Desire users. It makes a phenomenal difference to the amount of memory you can gain, but it is worth remembering that it isn't the only option.

There are two things you can do to make more space on your Desire without rooting.

1. Get the Froyo update and move apps to the sd card (you've probably done this already).
2. This is limited though, as not all apps can be moved. If you look at my signature, I made a guide for forcing most apps to sd which also gives a lot more memory. You don't need root for this.

If you only need a little more memory or are a bit unhappy about rooting I would advise trying those first. It makes a difference, but the memory is still low. It isn't a patch on what is possible once rooted. But remember, there are other benefits to rooting other than just getting more memory. I won't go into details as I'm sure you know them, or you can research yourself. But basically, it allows a much greater amount of customisation of almost every aspect of the phone: From the ROM you run to overclocking the processor. The possibilities are endless.

Indeed. Rooting is the way to fix the low memory issue properly.

In Go launcher, simply select another theme and the icons will change.
