Dave, you can't install CWM with ROM Manager until it supports our phone. If you attempt it you will brick your phone. Go to the root section of this forum and install CWM via interdpth's method, then proceed to do a backup in CWM and you'll be all set.

Don't use rom manager. you'll brick your phone. use clockwork mod to flash roms. there are 4 amazing roms out now, $hevron ROM, MrRee??? ROM, prime ROM and Star-scrom (5 if you count $hevron's stock rom). I find they are all great, but each one has its unique look and system apps. check the forums in "all things root" to find the roms and for further instructions.

From what I've gathered the reason why rom manager will not work is because our phone is not officially supported by cwm and those of us that have cwm aren't using an official version of cwm but rather a modified version that works for our phone thanks to the hard work done by interdepth.

Wait your using ROM manager???? Install the custom cwm we have here for the Ultra. ROM manager will brick your phone.

....
P. P. P. S. Did you say cwm/rom manager? If you're using the app or another version then the one found on these forums you are gonna screw up your phone. The one found on these forums does not have rom manager on it which is why I ask.

You know I've often wondered why CWM seems to have a monpoly on rooted android recovery mode software...I used to use AMON_RA recovery but then everyone just stopped using it and jumped on the CWM bandwagon, even though Ra recovery was better, in my opinion...it still had the recovery terminal (CWM dropped this feature way back when), and it even had a way to make your own themes for it, mine had a cannibal corpse wallpaper, it was wicked!
But now it seems that CWM is dominating the rooted android market..this dude controls how you backup your roms and how you install new roms and restore backups, and whether your phone is even supported by CWM...meaning he chooses what phones get to be rooted unless someone does what interdepth did and modify it...which usually results in what we have now, a crippled recovery that (apparently) may or may not destroy your device....no offense to interdepth he did a great job but its not all perfect and the whole two minute idle reboot problem has semi bricked me numerous times so id LOVE to have ANY OTHER OPTION than CWM...but all rooted android users seem to have only one choice: his way...when there could be other options out there that don't force you to buy their six dollar app to have full functionality...that's what open source is all about, not just using whatever crap is available and having to choose between paying up or making do with less than perfect performance and/or functionality...someone needs to work on a fresh recovery for android devices and put CWM in its place because its slowly turning into a money machine...and if somebody doesn't bust the CWM bubble soon, next thing you know hell be locking down the recovery and charging you just to GET the recovery on your phone, which means paying up just to root ur phone...if that's where android is headed I'm out...

the problem is amon_ra is closed source. the only devices taht get it are ones that hackish the crap up or he decides, CWM is by NO means my fav choice. but its open source and guides on how to port it. its not rom manager that truly bricks the stuff its people thinking recoveries will work on their phone because it worked on XYZ device... rom manager has NEVER bricked a single device without the user clicking on install recovery. if you want it to be official then make sur eit works 100% submit it to koush and chances are he'll work with ya on making it look good and official. then rom manager would work for ya.

koush has instructions on if you want cwm ported on what to do. if you cant be bothered to send him your phone for a few months then better learn on how to make cwm for your device (he has a guide on how to do that as well)

so yea until someone gets it proper and submitted rom manger does run a risk of bricking, but tahts only if you chose to do anything with it....

P.S. cwm has nothing to do with root, its just easier to use the cwm and make it than it is to pack a pre-rooted kernel. the only people who decide if a phone gets root or not is the users....
