Do you need a constant internet connection to receive push updates?

I just started use the Social Networking widget on my Droid X with Gingerbread and I use push notifications to get the updates from it. I also like to turn off the data after a period of inactivity in order to save battery. I was wondering if the internet is turned off on my phone, and there are updates to my Facebook when the data is turned off, will I still get those updates on my phone when the internet connection is reestablished?

So my question really is do updates and notifications get backlogged when the phone loses internet connection, to then be sent when the phone reestablishes connection?
