Does anybody *not* have screen banding?

what banding?

this thread sounds like more phone hypochondria.....

It probably seems that way because there are probably more displays that do not have obvious banding or people simply don't notice it because they're either used to it or it just doesn't bother them.

Here's an example picture I found on XDA that someone took a picture of with their camera:

The 'screen door effect' is very profound on this one, but I think this is one of the worst ones I've seen. On most screens I think it's not nearly as noticeable. :)

this is what a couple folks on here are complaining about? seriously?

Yep, some people are used to LCD or other screen technologies which do not have this effect. It's one of those "once it's seen it can't be unseen" things for those that are annoyed by it. Mine had some medium banding (a little better than the sample image), but it didn't bother me since I never noticed it in day to day use of the phone. It was only visible in the settings and market (WHY google decided to use a gradient background in the settings knowing this screen was pentile+samoled is beyond me! haha) so for me it was just a *shrug*

As has been said a million times in this forum, what bothers some may not bother others and vice versa. For some, the banding is something they are willing to exchange for in order to get one with less obvious banding. The existence of this thread is a testament to that. :)

I agree with the comment about what bothers some may not bother others what I do. What I do have a problem with is the insinuations in the "banding issue" threads that this is a HUGE flaw in the phone, accusations that those that don't see it are in denial, postings warning others that they should not buy the phone because of this "major problem", and on and on and on....

For those that have the problem and can't stand it then it is time to move on to another phone and another area of the forum. There are MANY of us with the phone that LIKE the phone and are KEEPING the phone.

i think it's normal, and only bothers phone hypochondriacs lol :)

FWIW, I checked my phone against the demo that a local VZW store had. Theirs showed the banding but a little less obvious than mine.

Their screen color temp was also a little warmer than mine, but that could be because I was running Screen Adjuster at the time (but now I cant remember if it was enabled or not). Or it could just show that Francos kernel really does improve the screen color a bit.

What I found more interesting was that my phone sitting 1/2" to the left of the demo phone had 1 bar of 4G, whereas their demo had 2 or 3 bars of 3G. This was inside a shopping mall, so its a pretty good test of signal lock in a crowded/large/somewhat metal building.

I have a second Nexus on the way from WireFly to compare to the one I have now. Here's to hoping I get the best of both worlds.

On a completely grey screen, there's a 1.5" diagonal strip (a few millimeters wide) that's a little lighter than the rest of the screen.

Im getting 1 or 2 faint "bars" on the right side of the screen, about 1/4" wide each. Now that I know where they are, I SWEAR I can see them in colors other than just gray, but I think thats just the whole "cant ever un-see it" thing.

2nd VZW store demo model exhibited same "warm" whites as my phone BUT the banding was non-existent. Lets see how my replacement from WireFly looks. Oddly enough, 2nd VZW store demo phone also backed down to 3G before my phone did. Im starting to wonder if they have the updated radios (stupid me forgot to check the baseband version)

I am struggling to find any banding at all lighting positions and screen brightness levels and I don't see anything at all.

turn the brightness down as if you're reading a book in the dark. It's quite noticeable and irritating. My second phone also had a purple hue to it. Everyone I showed it too said it was crap.

All I know is that I have the HTC rezound now and I have zero issues. I'm perfectly happy with it.

Not trying to hate on the Rezound, but if the biggest complaint is banding, etc which seems to be at least partially inherent to the screen technology itself, arent you comparing apples to oranges since the Rezound doesnt use AMOLED?

I have partial banding, but Im sticking with the GNex. Ill try a 2nd (and maybe even a 3rd) GNex and will just keep the best one. I like the phone, and the "open"ness of the Nexus enough to overlook a few flaws that arent visible 99% of the time.

Turn the brightness up slightly and this goes away. I'm pretty sure its a limitation of the technology and is actually happening because we can turn the brightness down *more* than most other phones. If I had to guess, I'd say that in general, a manufacturer would limit the lowest brightness such that these sorts of things don't appear. That is actually a bad thing, in my book, since I use my Gnex to read in bed and turn the brightness all the way down. My old iPhone never went dark enough.

My screen looks like the others in terms of the gray banding *if* I have the brightness all the way down. When I turn that up, it goes away.

How high up before it goes away? Mine has traces of it even up to 100%, but its barely there after 50% brightness.

Ive now looked at 3 others and they all have *some* banding. The best was at a local VZW store, the worst is the one WireFly sent me to possibly replace the one I have. My phone is 2nd best out of the 4.

This phone is really frustrating. The first one I had looked perfect, but the sound through the phone was horrible. I exchanged it and the same thing. I exchanged that one and got one with reasonable sound and terrible screen banding and discoloration and the NFC chip seems to be defective. I have until the 14th to decide what I want to do about it but Verizon was clear that they were not going to do anymore swaps after the 14th. Should I turn my phones ( mine and my wifes phones) in and walk?

My wifes phone btw works perfect in every way.

Hers has the purple case, mine is the gray. This shows the discoloration the best. Both phones were in same brightness setting and it shows about the same in all settings. The phone has no clear black everything has a purple hue to it.

My honest feeling here is that the phones are bad from samsung and not verizon. I hope that the next nexus is a motorola, as much as I hate motorola, samsung has much deeper problems then motorola at this point. I've never seen so many lemon devices in my life....

Upon closer inspection I've noticed my phone has the "screen door" effect... but to a very minor degree on certain shades of gray. Overall... nothing to make a big deal over since it's not very pronounced. Now the whole thing with the barely blue pixelation in really dark portions of video that was covered in another thread... yeah I get that. But again it's barely noticeable.

I've noticed absolutely no banding whatsoever.

And if you have something that only shows up on a completely gray screen... how often are you looking at a completely gray screen?

I had pretty bad banding on mine, so I took it back and got a new one. The reps had no idea what I was talking about so it was a fun time. My new Nexus has no banding that I can see at all and it's AWESOME!

Exactly why Ive stopped obsessing about it.

2 phones from WireFly (including my first which Im keeping) and 1 of 2 VZW demo phones had some sort of banding, and every 1 except that VZW demo (which was perfect) were worse than mine.

I bought mine online, but was able to convince one of the staff in a local store to let me do an exchange for a new one as it was within the 14 days. What made my case is he had a Nexus personally, and we compared mine, to his and to the display one. All three had different degrees on the same website (solid gray area).

He let me open a few until I found one with minimal banding, and that's the one I have now.

Well, the last 2 I had from Costco which were manufactured in late December had very minimal banding. But they also kept dropping voice and data over and over. Upwards of 15 times a day. This one I just swapped has a radio that doesn't do the drop thing, but it has a very purple and yellow tint and a 1/2 cm vertical band on the right and lots of other smaller bands. I can see the bands even on other non-gray screens. So I guess I have to decide if it's worth swapping and possibly getting yet another bad radio one or one with some other problem. Seems to me like their QA/manufacturing process really is inconsistent.

My phone has purple tint when brightness is at very low, and i have not sure if it branding, a small very thin line vertical, and can only see it on the settings menu and any screen that is grey even at 100% brightness, though not as bad as say 50%

Everything else works perfectly though, reception is superb in fact I say blows my old fascinate away, sound quality is one of the best everyone says I sound awesome.

So I keep going back and forth if i should exchange, because it is random what I get. I did check the demo model and it had that purple tint, but I could not see i guess what you call banding.

I will probably leave it my luck next phone will perfect looking, but have horrible signal.

Consider yourself lucky then, you would notice it in the settings screen for sure and I definitely go into my settings at least a couple times a day.

I ended up just keeping mine too much of a hassle to relock the bootloader and fight with Verizon to get another one that might be worse since I've really only got one noticeable band and everything else has been great with my handset. From the boards I frequent this is pretty common so good for you if you cant see it or got a good one..

for the people who got an exchange from verizon, how did you get the new phone? i bought the phone on sunday, and i noticed the banding since i leave it on automatic brightness. it does go away at 50%, but that's not the point. so i went to the store today and first spoke with an associate, he said he didnt see it, so he called the manager. the manager said he saw it on my phone as well as the display phone but said it's not a problem and refused to do anything about it. i rather have one without banding. should i call 611?
