Does anyone actually LIKE this phone?

I'm thinking about getting this phone so I've been doing some research here and there, including reading some forums. But all I see on forums are negatives and complaints. Is anyone happy with their purchase of this phone? Or are the flaws people are experiencing just too much to recommend it?

Thanks for any input

I love the phone and love using it. It is very fast and very configurable, easy to use. It has become quite an obsession, especially being connected to social networks and everyone all the time. Also, having the freedom to stay away from home computer. Everything about the phone is really very functional and well thought-out. It does exactly what you want it to. The only thing that I am mildly displeased with is the slightly muffled sound in the earpiece, but then again, I haven't really found any smartphone to have that good quality in that regard. You won't be disapointed!

The two main issues appear to be heat spikes that may be Flash related, and MP3s & some other audio popping during playback.

The good stuff IMO

Fast
Blur is nice (for once)
Display is very nice and also responsive
Great battery life & power management
Great radio reception
Great call quality
Form factor allows decent one hand- operation on a bigger phone
Solid build quality & Gorilla Glass
Speaker is good
Audio quality from 3.5mm jack is fantastic (sans the pops)
Easy to root
Netflix works great
Flash works great too, but sometimes runs into the issue mentioned at top.

All things considered, the DX2 rocks, but needs the two main issues fixed, none the less.

I'm coming from a rooted OG Droid, and I have to say that I am loving this phone. The only thing it is lacking is 4G, but I am convinced that current 4G hardware has some issues to overcome (battery life, holding 4G signal, etc) and I really don't have a ned for 4G in my daily phone activities.

I realize Motorola is loved or hated by many, and I fall into the former group. I think Moto makes a great phone. I always get a great 3G signal where others only have a bar or two, the materials used for the handset are top notch (metal cases with gorilla glass), and the overall functionality just works.

There seem to be several posts by 4G phone users on these forums that talk about conserving battery life by turning off their 4G connections. Huh? If you compare the X2 to any 4G phone without it's 4G signal, I'd argue that the X2 bests all of them.

Sure there are some annoyances, but I think they exist with any phone. The Droid had some problems as well, but if the USB port were not flaking out on mine causing it to reboot whenever I plugged in the charger, I'd stil be using it instead of the X2.

I believe the X2 will be a grand phone for the next several months; long enough to let 4G hardware mature before my next upgrade. ;)

Most people come to forums to oppose Caesar, not praise him. ;-)

Forums most common role is for folks to solve problems/post gripes/get help, etc., so that means that the majority of comments are usually critical, negative, or problem-related.

My wife has had her X2 for a week or so, and flat-out loves it. The only issue we've run into so far is Pandora not playing smoothly, but have to do more troubleshooting to see if that was a network issue. She'd buy the X2 again in a heartbeat...

Big, faster upgrade from my Original Droid. Got that one the first week also, I expected that all "new" operating systems would have a few issues after they are out in the real world. Keeping mine. It is a great phone, have not had a dropped call - right now 3G is more dependable that 4G in my area. Screen is visable in the daylight, and battery life has been good. I would choose this one again.

Same here, and my D1 was rooted and overclocked! Loving this phone. I just want them to fix the crackling audio issue and give us some Gingerbread love, then all is good for me. I'm not having alot of the problems others are (for example, some complain about the battery). It's a smart phone! I have a charger at work, one in the car, and one at home. No biggie. I honestly couldn't tell you how the battery life is because I charge it on my way to work, and on my way home from work.

same here. im a fan of motorola droid branded phones, they seem solid. i like the fact that it has a metal case verse that of the samsung fasincate. it just needs a few minor fixes (cough, flash, cough) and GB of course.

I love this phone I rooted froze bloat wear and I use golauncher and it works better than any other phone I ever used way thunderbolt or DROID 2 which had both of those

the only issue im having with my phone is it displays and charing when its not and vice versa as well as saying its a lower battery percentage than it actually is a reboot always show the correct battery somewhat annoying but other than that absolutely no issues with skipping overheating the only real issue is that it didnt launch with gb and that the original x got it first which is complete bs

This is my first touch screen smart phone (I've had a BlackBerry), but I've played around with a lot of other people's phones. I'm really loving my DX2. It's fast, the screen is big and sharp, and it's responsive. I've always loved Motorola phones, they have always used quality materials in their products, and the DX2 is no different.

I'm leaning to Revolution but DX2 is close second runner for me. My only concerns are sporadic heat spikes with media files due to flash as reported here, and some camera troubles. I'm not looking for digital camera like quality, but things like not focusing, laggy operation, jerky video record concerns me.

Either device should make 99% of folks happy. Bing I think is more a matter of principle to most of us (just seems wrong), so not as bad as made out IMO.

I have been messing around with the DX2 camera and find it to work fine. It is a lot faster taking a pic than the DX1 and better than my Incredible, but that is relative. Impulse pics are fine with the DX2 and seem okay IMO with the Rev.

Both devices have great (IMO) radio reception and have solid strengths. If I were not a gamer (N64 & PSX rock with Tegra 2), I would be happy with the Rev.

The heat is mainly a perception issue due to the metal case and especially the cover. I tested all three 4G devices (no 4G data though) and the Incredible. All were within a degree or two at rest (charge and not), downloading and Flash playback.

All devices get to 104 degrees for lower res Flash content and get to about 114 with HQ or better. Just like the DX2, but have plastic bodies and covers to insulate the heat from the hand.

Heat LUVS metal.

I'm pretty sure I'm going with the Droid X2. The only drawback I see is that it's not 4G, which I don't even need. In fact, 3G is even an improvement on what I have now! I expect 4G to have some growing problems like any network anyways. Plus, isn't the battery life much worse with the new 4G phones? So I think I'll go with the arguably best 3G phone on the market in the Droid X2. It's a beast.

How about camera in DX2? I'm not talking about picture quality but overall smooth operation without glitches, hiccups.

It's not the best camera on a phone. The hardware is there, but I think Motorola needs to address it with an update. It's fine in well lit areas, but low light conditions present problems. Using the dual-LED flash makes people look like cadavers. I think it was a mistake to do away with the dedicated camera button. Don't even get me started on the camcorder. It seems to work well for about 30 seconds, and then invariably starts staggering.

I came over to the X2, had the fascinate for a couple weeks and was not satisfied.what a world of difference it was. Sure it overheats and the battery sucks at times, but overall a great phone.

Most of the heat issues are perception, since the DX2 has a metal case and the 4G devices and most others have plastic bodies & covers. I tested the Inc and the three 4G devices. All have similar heat levels, but appear to run cooler due to the plastic not conducting the heat.

All devices spike up to 114 degrees with HQ Flash content. The DX2 still has some sustained spikes, none the less and does need to be fixed.

That and the sound clicks & pops (mainly while multi-tasking).

I would also like to know where the heck the ram is, since not buying that 200mb is allocated to the Tegra 2. Maybe 100mb, which is still too much, but about 200mb is what is not accounted for.

I have the DX and love it. I went to the verizon store, the other day and checked out the x2. It is a superior phone. Kevin Krause, editor of Phandroid likes it too. You can read his review
here.

Love my DX2. The call quality is superb. Feel like I'm using a land line phone. I'm also very pleased with the separate notification LED lights. I chuckle a little bit when I think about having actually considered buying a Droid Charge and using the NoLED app.

I like the DX2 a lot, but the ram issues are getting to me. In order to get the device to function without much lag and audio issues, a script needs to be used and apps kept at bay (even this does not have optimum success). The total user apps, OS and system apps, plus the free memory does not equal anywhere remotely close to 512mb ram. This device (at least functionally) does not appear to have 512mb of ram and has to be "babied" like the Droid 1 (256mb ram).

if my droid 1 still worked (screen bit the dust) i'd still be using that and use the dx2 for testing only. droid 1 was a more reliable phone. motorola would have another killer phone on their hands if they sorted out the mem issue.

I agree. Motorola doesn't have good track record when it comes to phone cameras. Though camera is not high priority for me, for some other folks it is.
Also the flash related overheating, low memory issue with Tegra2 make the upcoming Droid 3 with OMAP4 more appealing than DX2 to me.

1. For impulse pics, the DX2 seems fine. I can not take a phone camera seriously, since a digital (fake) zoom, so it is what it is. The N900 has a great camera, but I did not take it too seriously either. Reviewers that zoom and take pics are not to be taken seriously (no different than you taking a non zoomed pic and zooming in software, since SAME thing).

2. Again the heat issue is mainly perception due to the metal build. If you test all current 4G devices during rest, charging, downloading and Flash, they get within 1-2 degrees same core temps. The metal cover on the DX2 REALLY transfers heat.

3. I am about 100% most issues are due to the low operational ram- Tegra 2 chipset appears to choke with the constraint and has no room to operate as designed. Again, my sucktasticly Tap software designed gTablet does not have the issues- but also has 200mb more operational ram. There is no way the DX2 has 512mb of FUNCTIONAL ram.

4. There appears to be some form of memory leak. Just watch how low the ram goes, the longer you go between resets. In spite of script mods or stock parameters, the memory slowly vanishes. Case in point: I show ATM 236mb used by the OS, OS tasks and apps and 33mb free. That equals 269mb- WHERE IS THE F-N' RAM?!

I am still not sure if I am keeping the DX2, but need to make a decision by tomorrow. The low operational ram is choking the DX2- plain and simple.

Motorola appears to have made zero effort and truly phoned the DX2 dev efforts in. They must have assumed that using mainly DX1 components and gutting the Bionic's most costly components and then slapping them together would be fine.

It goes to show how much is done right with the DX2 that I am still debating keeping it:

1. Build- check
2. Display- check
3. Chipset- check
4. Easy root- check
5. Call quality- check
6. Radio reception- check
7. Battery life- check
8. UI check (still stunned)
9. RAM- WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!

As others have mentioned, I think we are owners of a device to buy Motorola time and affords both VZW and Moto an avenue to bleed out add-on stock and components.

Had they not borked the RAM, I would be fine with it.

Added:

If I return the DX2, will wait a few months, since the current 4G devices all have glaring issues and I can not be bothered to root unless VERY simple like Gingerbreak (I am past the mad mod days and just want the device to work well- out of box).

TB: Battery sucking demon with no internal media storage and issues with 3G/4G fringe areas.

Charge: Slow, no internal storage and weak reception

Revolution: The more I look at the display, the more washed out and grainy it looks. The Rev also appears to have its own lag issues.

If the DX2 did not have the low ram issues, it would be close to "perfect" IMO.

I would rather NOT return it, due to the stuff it does right.
