Does Anyone Else Hate Their Epic?

It's a really long corner... ;) Though I must say, they have to be working hard on it. For a bit there seemed to be a new release every two weeks trying to iron out the kinks. I guess some of those kinks are proving to be quite formidable.

I actually went back to Syndicate and ditched testing the leaks. Back to waiting patiently. Realized the leaks, when working well, weren't giving me anything that was of any real use. Things seemed a little smoother and nicer, but it wasn't worth the reboots I was getting.

Samsung/Sprint has really ruined the Android experience.
I am rooted - have tried many versions - that is not the point.
The Samsung-Sprint connection is crapola - I will never buy another samsung device ever - that includes TV's etc. (Just bought a new 55" sony last month, old one was a Samsung - they will not get anymore money from me - I hope the company starts to feel the financial affects and maybe encourage sprint not to f*&k with the software - I would encourage everyone else avoid samsung devices - I don't give a crap if the h/w is superior - h/w is nothing with out s/w and timely updates)
I can glad sprint got the iphone - I am up for an upgrade and will definitely be giving it a shot - it could not be worse.

EOL is coming - You will be lonely in this Ghost Town...clutching to a dying/dead device:D
I can already smell the decay.

You mean clutching the new Epic 2 when it comes out?

You're ready to go into a 2yr contract with a phone that is already a year old with two newer versions of it already announced. That makes sense why?

This makes no sense what ever new phone I get I will have to sign up again for another 2 years to get the phone - unless I pay full price:confused:

I am not leaving sprint anytime soon so a contract becomes irrelevant.

because you're jumping now on a phone that is already a year old with it's next two successors already announced. It makes perfect sense. If the 4s is only a little bit away why would you want to get a 4 now considering it's already a year old and you're stuck for another two years with it? I'd think differently if it was a one year contract, but if I'm jumping into a two year contract I want to go into it with the latest and greatest, not last year's tech.

You haven't even mentioned having problems with your Epic, just that you don't care for the slow updates, and that's what has generated all this anger that you're willing to boycott the company as a whole because they didn't give you gingerbread soon enough?

Sorry. Don't see your logic at all.

well back on the straight and narrow. on the topic at hand...apologize for not realizing both iphone 4's were coming this month. Thought I read how all the rumors of the S coming now to Sprint were bunk and the news was just the 4 coming now. My bad. If he's picking up the 4s, I have no beef :) Though I'd have a hard time leaving a 4" slider for a 3.6" slate. So much more functional with a keyboard, and media viewing is nicer on the larger screen even if the res is lower. But that's just me.

Also, for $200 you only get 16gb and have to pay another $100 to get 32gb when you can stick with android and the Epic Touch or Photon and have 16gb built in with the ability to expand to 48gb for about $36, plus have access to 4g if it's in your area for more speed, surf and talk, no tie to itunes and so forth. And the exynos does 1080 high profile too so it can do direct blu ray rips. Though I doubt the 4S will have tegra 2 like limitations especially if samsung is behind the processor. Which actually makes the move to not support samsung even more comical because the iphone is riddled with samsung components. So you're supporting them whether you like it or not.

Yes the move the move would be to the 4s.
These are my reasons and not anyone elses.
Pros
I do not live in a 4g area so not an issue. (This will save me money correct?)
Could consolidate into 1 device and leave the ipod at home.
Timely software updates.
Could never for the life of me get the epic to connect to the iMac and god knows I have tried many different ways, (could connect to linux and windows - but I am migrating away from windows - keeping the mac as the commercial OS in the house)
Get to try an alternative - you never know until you've tried. (I believe in trying things before I can give an opinion - how many people criticize without experience?)
I will have a backup phone if the new one breaks. (potential to drop insurance to save more money)

Smaller
Cons - that I can see at the moment.
No keyboard - I will miss that but I will get a slimmer device.
Lack of Flash - (think there are some work arounds)

I think this is a no brain'r.
Why would I expect to think that it will be any different the second time with new samsung products?
If I was to stay with android I would try HTC or Moto. (I already gave samsung/sprint a chance and they failed)

One, you won't save any money. The $10 charge is premium data, not for 4g. It's for the fact you'll be sucking up more data on any newer smartphone. So you won't save a thing.

I stream video from Amazon all the time so I couldn't do without flash. I also edit a lot of text in docs to go and emails so I couldn't live without a keyboard. I guess you'll see how important a keyboard was to you. Hopefully not very. I play with an iphone almost every week, so I know what I don't like. iTunes would be one of those things. But you're in a mac environment so that's different.

Why would Samsung be different next time around? Because they took a lot of flack for the updates or lack of them, and I think the problems in the US are more carrier related as well as hardware related since the Epic has different internals than the other Galaxy phones. If you're busting out release after release of test builds for gingerbread and running into issues, it certainly can't be for a lack of trying. I think SGSII's are a bit more streamlined outside of the screen size and Exynos/OMAP. Remember, the rest of the world got their Galaxy Gingerbread updates which is why I blame the US carriers more as well as the slightly different hardware in the Epic.

Besides, the Epic Touch is one nice phone. If I had to go to a slate it would be the one of choice compared to the Photon or Evo3D. I just want it in a damn slider. I'm also playing around with the Moto XPRT and think I could use it as a dialy driver if they just ditched the bezel and enlarged the screen a bit. The keyboard goes tot the edges thankfully. But you have a good quarter inch bezel around that screen. With a strong metal casing around it, take the damn screen closer to the edge. At least BB got that right with their newer phones.

Some days I really hate my Epic... but I try and remind myself that it's an Android and it's 'technically' one of the best around even to this date.

It does have a lot of problems, yeah... but Google Navigation, Go SMS and Dolphin HD Browser that I have on it have never treated me better. It's a love hate relationship. I love my Android... I love everything it does... but sometimes the crap it DOES... really pisses me off. :[

(Is cursing allowed?) :x

I can say that most of the time, I like the Epic 4g. The 2 things that bug me about it is the battery life, and lack of 4g around me. I just don't understand how I'll find 4g spots more in the suburbs, than I will in the metro area. And battery life simply isn't that good. I'll probably purchase an extended battery.

Besides that, its a great phone. I can listen to Pandora. I can listen to music I've downloaded. I can buy music from Amazon, and download it directly to my phone. If I hear a song that I like on the radio, I can click on an app, and it will tell me what the song is, who sings it, and whether I can buy it online. I can take little movies of my kid and upload them directly to facebook. I can watch movies and TV shows on my phone from media I've ripped, or from Netflix. I can sync my phone with my car. The voice to text message works pretty damn well. I can use my phone as a GPS. I can check my mail, news, and weather on it. Hell, I call listen to police band radio on the thing.

Oh, and it makes phone calls.

I mean, that's pretty sweet. That doesn't include all of the other functionality it has, like quick document editing, managing financial accounts, using instant coupons, playing games, both single and multi-player, browsing the internet, taking photos of stuff that's happening around me, or simply using my phone as a flashlight. I don't exaggerate when I say that my Epic 4g gets used as much as my main computer.

I admit, I've thought about rooting the phone, so I would have access to wireless tethering. I'd also be able to get rid of the crap that Sprint puts on the phone that I absolutely do not, or will not use. However, those are minor things to me, and don't outweigh the other features that have made having this phone a pleasure.

So tl;dr, I do not hate my Epic. I think it is a fantastic piece of technology.

I have a love hate relationship with mine. For the most part it's ok. I love the screen and the keyborad and swipe. I hate android and I really hate Samsung for making us wait SOOOOO long for the Ginger update. Before I bought this phone, I made sure it was going to get the update. Samsung said it would.... I'm still waiting. This will be my last samsung phone. Android is going to get MUCH better for me to go this route again. The whole OS is half baked... yes, it's open source blah blah blah but it should work correctly. I long for 359 days till I get to upgrade into an iPhone or dare I say a windows nokia. At this point I think anything is better than this half baked android phones everyone is putting out. F samsung and F android. Grrrrr!

What makes you call it "half-baked" exactly?

Hopefully "right around the corner" does not mean the same thing that it meant for the 6 months prior to the Froyo release.

I'm eligible for upgrade after Oct 1... at this point I'm going to wait and see if the iPhone5 becomes available on Sprint.

Update: Confirmed

So I've got my iPhone 4S now... kept my Epic alive for a couple more days on WiFi only (to transfer some more pics off) and fittingly, it locked up again while charging, requiring removal of the battery... for the last time!

Holy crap, the iPhone's battery life kills. With the same usage patterns as my Epic (maybe more since I'm still in "new toy" mode), I've been off the charger since yesterday morning and the battery is still half full.
Mostly surfing on WiFi, a few short voice calls, some texting, gaming and reading.

That's without worrying about turning off bluetooth, WiFi, data network mode, task killers, or all the other stuff I had to do on my Epic when I wanted the battery to last more than 8 hours.

Cripes, I even have the GPS enabled full-time, along with bluetooth.

And I don't have to worry about the manufacturer abandoning it when it's less than a year old....

I'm contemplating the jump myself eventually. Too bad I'm not at my two year for awhile.

Question though: why does my battery run out FASTER when I'm on Wifi??? I thouhgt Wifi was supposed to save battery?

I have a lot of problems with my epic. I owned it since September of last year and it was great for about the 1st month. Now these might be just complaints or legitimate problems...I'm not sure.

Initially with the stock 2.1, battery life was horrible. I would go maybe 3/4 of a work day and it would need to be charged. Honestly I didn't have too much of a problem with that, but it kind of sucks when I'm out and about on a weekend and my phone is about to die.

2nd is I had so much trouble with hanging up or making phone calls at time. It would lag like the cpu is overloaded.

3rd the problem that bothered me the most is mp3 files. It would come up with...this player does not support these files. It would happen randomly. This became an issue when I used my phone as an alarm with an mp3 as my alarm. My alarm wouldn't go off since it can't play the mp3. This includes my ringtones, so I would just get silent. This would work after a reboot, but I would have to reboot twice a day for my simple mp3s to work.

So I decided to go with the rooting. Phone became super fast, battery life would exceed a day, and all was merry in the rooting world.

A month after that, I'm having problems again. The mp3 issue came up once more, GPS is even more horrible than it was before, and occassinally my phone would force close google framework. Now I can't text or make calls, and sometimes it crashes bad enough where I can't even use my phone whatsoever. I'll just have to re-image my phone and all is good for a short amount of time. Couple other people I know have the same issues.

So here I am looking for answers since I thought rooting would fix my issues.

I am so with you on this one. I purchased my Epic 4G Aug 2011 went through 3 phones in 3 weeks and it had still been a total nightmare and I was ready to leave and go to Verizon and throw my phone against the wall.

GB update came. My phone was locked in a constant reboot cycle so you can imagine how angry I was at that point. I did notice that if I took out my SD card it would stop the cycle. I need the files/apps on my SD Card so I finally did a factory reset without my SD card installed. WOW! I have a nicely stable phone that runs faster and fixed about 99% of my previous problems.

Here are two apps that I discovered that I think are a must have. The first one I found just before the update and I will always use this app. It's called PowerMax if you haven't heard of it yet. It's in the market here: https://market.android.com/details?...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS52b2x0dXAucG93ZXJtYXgiXQ..

The second I accidently found this new app called Airdroid which can be found here: https://market.android.com/details?...t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5zYW5kLmFpcmRyb2lkIl0.

PowerMax since my testing has been the best by far the top battery saver. There is a 7 day free full trial. After that it has ads if you decide not to purchase it. Everyone who hasn't tried it should seriously give it the 7 day trial at least. It has worked flawlessly on Froyo and even seems better on GB.

Airdroid is in my opinion THE top app for accessing your phone through the Mac and PC. I have been testing it on the Mac since my PC is dead and no need for physical cable. Just the same network for your phone's wifi and you computer. You access your phone's files through the web browser and it is awesome. You can even back up system files. I'm not sure if its all of them but there are quite a few system files I did back up to my Mac. Its kind of like doing a nandroid backup on non rooted phones which is where I'm at. I backed up everything on my Mac and it runs pretty quick. Definitely give this one a shot if you have problems with your computer recognizing your phone.

Hope this helps others as much as its helped me. These again are must have apps for my phone. Juice defender has nothing on PowerMax and I haven't found a back up app that works great on the Mac than Airdroid.

Jim

One other thing since the GB update. On Froyo I took advantage of the 15 minute return policy and tried SPB Shell 3D and it crashed constantly, force closed, froze up and usually within 5 minutes so I returned it quickly. When GB came out I tried it again. I emailed SPB and they said they would refund after 15 minutes if I really was unhappy with the app so I tried it again. I've been using it for about 5 days now and with the exception of a couple of reloading when you do a lot of multitasking or stay in an app for a long time which is taxing on the memory it has been running great which totally surprised me. My birthday was the day before the GB update so my niece purchased it for me. Sure, its an expensive app for a launcher but I just love the eyecandy and I can always switch back and forth between that an my other favorite launcherl, Go Launcher EX and being that its a free app I figure I'm paying about $7.50 for each one.

There is one thing I have noticed with the GB update though. There seems to be some memory leaks which I hope they will fix with an update. During the day I notice about every 2-4 hours my cache builds up anywhere from 1-10 megs at times depending on what I'm doing on my phone. I use the App 2 SD widget by Sam Lu which shows cache and free internal memory so I just use that to quickly wipe out the excess memory leaks but it would be nice if I didn't have to do that. Outside of that I feel like I have a brand new phone but I still don't forgive Sprint for their lack of good customer support.
