Help Does Factory Reset Cause Data Loss

A friend is having trouble with the 2.2 OTA, he lost his phones ringing ability, I was gonna suggest a factory reset but he thinks VZW said this will cause him to lose data, like all his apps. Is this correct? If so is there a better solution to try first?

He was not rooted or anything.

Yes, all user data will be lost. Paid apps are tied to their Google account, so most that is required is redownloading/installing them.

Have your friend try a power cycle first (power off/on), that will most likely correct the problem.

A factory reset will definitely wipe all data. Just tell him to back stuff up before he tries it. Factory resets are painful but have good outcomes. Kind of like surgery. ;)

I have had a lot of problems updating to 2.2 (Still can't!) I did remove bloatware, but I reinstalled it and moved the apps to the system/app folder. It still didn't work. I also tried a factory restore, which erases all your data. Yet no results! Can someone help me!
