Help does froyo address battery fully charge issue?

I've rooted my phone and patiently waiting for some custom roms and such. Does anybody know if the roms or froyo update will address the charging issue with the incredible. I hate having to shut off my phone to get a full charge, and that extra 10% makes a big difference.
 
This is the first time I've heard of this problem. I just rooted last night and charged last night to 100% while it's on.
Did it do it before you rooted too?
 
There's no word on if Froyo does or not. That said, I'm not convinced that the charge problem is a hardware problem. It's more than likely caused by people who turn their phone on and use it when they received it without waiting the required 8 hours for the battery to calibrate.

the issue OP is talking about is where it doesn't fully charge. it says its at 100% but then as soon as you take it off the charger it drops from 100 to 90ish very quickly and from there on discharges at a normal rate. in another thread about this it was learned that if you remove the battery and charge it on a stand alone wall charger it does charge it to full capacity where charging it in the phone doesn't.

yeah, i have noticed this quick drop as well. But honestly my phone battery lasts sometimes more than two days. Usually i get almost 2 days out of it even with it dropping from 100 to 90 in about 3 hours.

Funny thing is I had to reset the phone and it took about 4 charges for it to get back to full strength.

I personally have not heard of Froyo addressing this *yet*...unless someone else knows something, we will need to wait and see. :confused:

Trust us, you are likely not getting a 100% charge. Next time you charge, when the light turns green ("100% charge"), unlug the charger for ~10 seconds and plug it back in. Your light will be orange and your phone will continue to charge for an additional 5-15 minutes. Unplug again once green and replug, and it will turn orange again and continue charging.

This can repeated for an additional 2-5 charging cycles (each getting shorter) until you plug in and it stays green.

Green light does not equal "100% charge". It's likely only ~90% of the charge but the green light turns on anyway.

OP, I'm not aware of any "fix" for this in Froyo. It will likely have to be a simple OTA bug fix update.

I'm experiencing same problem and did required charge, with phone OFF.

And just to add to to this, you can also charge till green and then power down the phone while still plugged in and it will turn orange and continue to charge for another 5-15.

UPDATE: I should add that mrjinglesusa's method of unplugging and replugging make much more sense than the power down method I mentioned above, otherwise why keep it powered on to begin with. the method I mentioned was simply to show you what happens.

Theoretically you should be able to charge it powered down and it will charge to 100% but I have found that even this will not get to a true 100%.

I found out first hand that powering down and charging DOES NOT fully charge the battery. I did this just two days ago. Powered down and charged overnight. Green light when I woke up. Unplugged and replugged (with phone STILL OFF) and phone charged for an additional 15-20 minutes. Unplugged and replugged, charged again for an additional 5-10 minutes. Rinse and repeat about 3-4 more times.

It doesn't seem to matter if phone is on or off when you do this cycle of unplugging and replugging - phone continues to charge after green light regardless. At least mine did....

Note that I did this because I noticed after about 1-2 weeks of simply charging overnight with phone on that my battery life seemed to be getting shorter and shorter.

Give the bump charge procedure a try and see what happens. But if your battery life is acceptable, then why bother (lest you're curious and want to squeeze out more power)?

Possible that this abnormality is not widespread anyway, so you could be in the clear.

2 Days??

What kind of battery are you using? With the stock 1300mAh that came with the phone I was needing a charge by the end of the workday. I've been using an HTC 1500mAh for a few days now and it's lasting longer - on into the evening. But there's no way it's going into a second day.

Based on the posts I've seen, very few people seem to think the battery life of the stock battery is acceptable.

I'm just trying to figure out if there's something I can do to improve my battery life - other than not use my phone.

I'm pretty sure that this is something in the chip on the battery itself. I have a desktop charger that charges and turns green to show full. I wait an extra 20 minutes, then turn my phone off, put the charged battery in and plug the phone in, and it will be amber (charging) for another 10-15 minutes, too.

For this reason, I think it's just a safety thing in the batteries themselves. Possibly when the phone is off, it doesn't get the same feedback it does from the phone while on or the charger..

Yeah I totally agree that it is some sort of "safety" thing going on. I don't think anything is "broken" as much as it may just be a calibration issue going on that the phone/battery relationship is giving a false 100%.

Obviously if the battery is giving a fully charged indication to the phone the phone is going to report it as such. I just think the fully charged indication is flawed.

Personally (and I am definitely guilt of this) I think we all look at our battery widgets as gospel and since our phones report in increments of 1% we can tend to get a little OCD about the "number" too much. I mean even in the 90 percentile range the battery icon is still green to the tip...

I removed Battery Indicator Pro for a week and it was almost blissful cause I stopped checking the number all the time and just enjoyed the phone. :cool:

Agreed. Since I established that my phone has no problem making it from the time I get up in the morning and unplug it till the time I go to bed and plug it back in, I don't even look at the battery charge level any more. Who cares whether it's at 50% or 20% at 11PM, as long as it's still usable? (having said that, it's usually at about 50%) :D
 
I thought I saw somewhere in another thread a response directly from HTC that says they're looking to address the issue in a firmware update. Whether or not it comes down when Froyo hits is a mere timing issue, but it's HTC specific. Furthermore, recommendations directly from HTC support specify to get the maximum charge for you battery to basically repeat the charge to green/power off/unplug/replug/charge to green/power on sequence twice. I personally leave my phone on the charger overnight and when I get up to get ready for work, I power off, unplug, and then replug. Usually I'm out the door ~30 minutes later and sometimes the "bump charge" is complete. Sometimes I don't do this in the morning because I just don't feel like power cycling the phone. When I "bump charge", I always get better battery life through the day, though I typically charge at my desk around lunch time.

If I can find the link to the HTC specified instructions, I'll post it.

Do you do anything with your phone other then let it just sit there and hibernate all day? I've never heard of anyone who owns this phone getting two days on a full charge with the stock battery.

Not referring to you, my friend...... I too have the problem. Just postulating that the abnormality isn't an epidemic and some of us don't have that issue.

Even better, don't unplug the device when the green light is on. Just turn the device off (while plugged in) and see what happens. I did that trick and the LED went from green--->red.

But of course, you could definitely be one of the chosen few.:)
 
The battery does indeed charge to full. What you guys are missing is that it isn't trickle charged. As soon as the phone reads 100%, it internally cuts off the charger. It's just like if you unplugged it as soon as it hits 100%. That drop is the amount of power used since it hit 100%.

If the phone trickle charged, it'd be fine. If I pull mine off as soon as it hits 100%, then it stays there. If I unplug it about 30 minutes before I take it off and let it hit 100% again, it's fine. If you understand the issue, you can work around it.
