Root Does lastest OTA prevent root

Duude

Lurker
Hey everyone. Hope all of you are doing well. I'm new here. I am currently stock and not rooted. I was, however, debating about rooting. I saw that the lastest OTA just came out and was wondering if I did the update would that prevent me from rooting? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forums!!!!! :D

Nope, if you are on android 2.3.5 (hboot 2.18) you will have to use the instructions here:

If you didnt accept the last few OTA's rooting is much easier and done via an automatic program

Because the newest root method is through HTC there will not be an ota that prevents root. Rooting the newest OTA's is a lot more work than prior methods though.

Can you pull out your battery, put it back in, and hold power+voume down and post your H-boot number?

the latest 5.07 ota will not prevent you from rooting. but as rxpert mentioned, accepting an ota should never be done if you have interest in rooting your phone. ota's for the most part will always close any previous exploits that was used to gain root. so with each new ota it will get harder to root the phone.

but the guide rxpert linked will work with the latest ota.

Sorry but I'm new to this rooting thing. Would it be ok for me to accept the OTA now since I may not have time to root until later on? From what you said I can still use the guide to root even after the OTA update to 5.07 right? Sorry for the dumb questions.

Never think your question is dumb...We've all been noobs at one time or another and now here to help others such as yourself:)
Ask away and Welcome to the Forums:D

The new OTA is very minor and just adds the connections optimizer and some bloat from apple lawsuits.

Do you mind posting your H-boot? If you are on one of the easy to root ones I wouldn't want you to make this harder than it has to be.

in the guide at the very beginning, it will explain how to get to your hboot and what guide will be appropriate for you to use. i would not accept the ota and just follow the correct guide. like rxpert says you could make it harder for yourself depending on what your hboot is.

It says locked at the top. Then HBOOT is 2.18. I take it that I will be using the first portion of the user guide that was linked above right?

ok the guide that rxpert linked is what you want. you can do any of the three methods. but the HTCdev method is the easiest, but that is up to you.

can I take the current ota 5.0 and then root just fine?

What if someone is rooted and wants to get the ota update? Is there a file generally for those folks?
