I have no clue as to what 4G is based on, either hardware/software or power and was wondering.

The Ally doesn't qualify for 4G because it doesn't have the 4G hardware, although, i believe that 3G devices will be able to use the same towers 4G will use

No current phone being offered by Verizon will work on 4G. They should announce 4G capable phones beginning of 2011

Verizon also said that they would be showing LTE capable phones at CES which will be January 6th through 9th. I bet that's when they announce the HTC Merge and Motorola handset

It'd be nice if they release something sooner. Here's hoping. But when something is shown and CES and when it's released are sometimes very different.

But let's stay optimistic that it's soon :)

EDIT: Oh, you said "announce" from the beginning. Then yeah, you're probably right. Oops. :P

Yeah, announce, lol. Motorola also said they would be announcing a possible LTE phone at CES but I'm sure they will be sold several months after January.

Sweet. Not that I'm unsatisfied with 3G speeds, but I'm excited, even if just from a technological standpoint.
