Root Don't Blame the ROM

netizenmt

Android Enthusiast
Recently there have been several posts with damning titles blaming one ROM or another for "breaking" their phone. Invariably, the problem ends up being caused by either the poster's own inability to follow directions, a lack of understanding regarding kernels or other add-ins, or in at least one case, by a service interruption from their cellular provider. In none of these cases has it been demonstrated that it was the accused ROM that actually caused the issue.

A lot of hard work and continuous effort has gone in to the development of the custom ROMs presented here. All of them are a work in progress and are constantly being tweaked to improve the performance of the Ally beyond that supported by LG. Are the ROMs perfect? No. But when hundreds are using a ROM successfully and you appear to be the only one having a particular issue, that should tell you something.

Before you race to the subject line to condemn someone else's hard work with a few short words, make an effort to get some help with the actual problem. Research the forums. Try another ROM or go back to stock and see if the problem continues. Get into IRC and ask for help. In short, THINK before you POST.

I am sure if you follow this simple advice, it will be greatly appreciated by the rest of your Ally community, the ROM devs themselves, and keep you from looking foolish later.

Thanks!

PS: Thanks goes out to Killertonez, Trident, drellisdee, and all the others whose hard work and creativity have made my Ally run like a champ. You are much appreciated!

Well put!

ROM's are vigorously tested before the public gets their hands on them. The one thing I have noticed a lot of lately is threads about "OKAY WITCH DO I FLASH 1ST?!" If you don't know this by the time you start flashing things, then maybe you shouldn't be flashing anything at all.

Please forum goers, read very closely and more than once before doing anything you find on this site.

You guys are 100% correct..I'm new to flashing LG's, and really new to android, and feel stupid when I ask questions, but I do search before I ask. I don't flash anything before I research and know the consequences, and so far, no brick!

Nobody forces you to flash these ROMs. There is always a risk when flashing ROMs or messing with the phone for that matter. There is more then enough help out there being it be the Forums or in IRC. Devs make sure to test everything and that is why they have Betas to find the bugs and fix them so the public doesn't have to put up with them. I couldn't ask for more from Trident, Killertonez, drellisdee, and everyone else who works hard to make the Ally or any Phone for that matter better. The number one reason a phone may mess up is by user error, research and understand is the best way to make sure you know what to do. If you need help, come into IRC.(freenode Web IRC (qwebirc)) There is someone that wouldn't mind helping and in the Quote of GRLZA, "it can get a little tricky at times, but this irc is the best tech support you could ask for"

But how do you expect people to learn which one the flash first if they don't ask. I doubt you were born with the knowledge of what to flash first so at some point you asked, which would mean you shouldn't have been flashing ROMs yourself.

I'm sorry, but this forum is a place for people to learn how to do things with their phone. It should be a place were someone should feel comfortable asking questions about something they don't know how to do, not feel like they are supposed to learn everything on their own.

I don't know much about all the things I can do to play and tinker with my phone, but I have learned a lot in the past few months. Two months ago I was afraid to root my phone. Then I was afraid to flash my phone. Now i'm comfortable doing pretty much anything I want and that's because I asked for help and the good people here answered my questions and that's what a good forum should do. Teach people, not force them to learn things on their own.

Well Heres the main thing that really Makes me wonder.... All the people that say "how do I go back stock My phones not working right. " Well my first question to these people. Did you make a backup of your phone while it was stock before you ever started Futzin with it?? Oh you didnt well that probably wasnt wise. Now you have experimented without having the proper knowledge on how to do this and you have no way of going back so as to try again. So I guess my main point is If your going to play with your phone which I think is wonderful for you to do... Take the proper precautionary steps and have a safety net.... ie a backup Stock Nandroid.
That will save you SOOOO much heart Ache... And it will do one more thing for you. It will Enbolden you to try new things that your a little iffy about. So Everytime your going to try somthing new BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. I mean you dont even have to have the ADB shell to put the recovery systems on any more just use Rom Manager to flash either of the best backup systems on the market today. Its really all about having patients and doing things with precautions and saftey nets in place.

You will have questions, you will mess your phone up. I have.
I may again in the future but if you do it properly and are patient there is almost no way you will Brick your phone and you can recover. Again Bricking is real I am not saying its not possible. I am just saying if you take the proper steps before doing anything and you have patients Its not real likely.
So good Luck. DONT blame the Rom. Keep trying and Backup like there is no tommorrow. And know, "yes its not if I mess up its When you mess up"
Because you will but thats Why you BACK UP LOL

Have I said the words Back Up Enough.

I love you guys Keep trying youll get it. Be Patient and be prepared.

I think the point was that every release, whether it be a ROM, kernel...whatever, has step by step instructions of what to do and how to do it.

I agree with netizenmt Rage and GRZ, and I see so many posts that ask a question that was previously answered...several times.

I would also add to this discussion, don't be afraid to use the IRC channels available. I've actually learned the most and received the most help there. Usually the ROM devs hang out there and are willing to take time, even a lot of time to help. There are also some very knowledgeable testers and tinkerers there who are very helpful. "dots" spent about 3 hours with me one day helping to bring my phone back from the brink of the blue abyss of the fastboot loader. I could have saved a great deal of time, had I created a proper backup. Needless to say, now I have several backups saved in several locations, as well as a ver-batim copy of my SD card saved on my computer. Now when I have issues with my phone after i've installed something new, i have a way to revert. I can honestly say though all problems I've had after loading new ROMs, have been because I did something out of sequence or some other type of user error. Usually a clean install will wrinkle out any issues, or redownloading the .zip and installing a fresh copy has helped any issues that clean installs down't resolve.
