Dont get virgin mobile

Please explain... Is "Flashing" a phone after rooting it the same thing as buying an unlocked phone and making it work with VM?
I really do not want to mess with rooting, I am just curious...

MoNameFace's answer is correct, .... mostly.
I think he meant by "flashing" was taking a phone from any other carrier and faking the VM system into thinking you are using one of their phones.
The VM system uses certain info that your phone sends back to them, you can fake that on a phone. Some Sprint phones can work this way on VM, but usually not very well. Doing this breaks numerous FEDERAL laws.

I'm being vague, while still trying to give you an idea how it works.

Changing the esn is fraud and a federal crime.. you can do some serious time in a federal prison for doing so. Not even allowed to talk about it here unless you want the thread locked.

Just sayin.

Skratte called you "MoNameFace" and "he" in the same post, amiga. That alone should get this thread locked. ;) Also, stop calling yourself old.

I'm at work with a huge project due out today, typing fast, forgive the spelling errors.:p

Old is only a state of mind.

Which incidentally also specifically prohibit rudeness and grammer-policing.

Awe Slug.. Melim is a sweetie and has a heart of gold and likes to tease, you just don't know her. ;) She wasn't being rude I promise. She just loves to tease me to death lol. :p

For once I actually thought that wasn't directed at me...Slug edited and I think even deleted some posts in this thread. But then again, every time I post outside the lounge anymore a mod shows up.

Thanks for havin my back, as always, NNF. I'll even forgive your calling me a sweetie. :p:D /hugs

Flashing means installing a custom rom. Think of it like having Windows 95 on your computer and then upgrading to Windows 7. Same thing. You're just upgrading the Android OS so that you can have more options, added functionality, and a smoother running OS. Of course, some people prefer staying with the same Android version and will merely install another flavor of the same. However, in order to install a custom rom you have to root first (unrooted = Guest account, rooted = Admin rights).

You're not going to be able to buy an unlocked phone and make it work with VM. Upon searching, most of the good phones I found that were unlocked were GSM (which do not work on a CDMA network). Perhaps there are some CDMA unlocked ones, but I didn't find any in my rushed search.

Hope that made sense.

Yes it did BadCo...and please forgive me, I did not mean to doubt your previous answer to me regarding Unblocked phones before.. I guess I was just looking for a second oppinion...:o

And wow! I did not know this is considered a federal crime!

Nothing to forgive! You should be asking for second opinions as it's never good to take someones word at face value.. especially on the net hehe. ;)

The problem with VM is not speeds or data or phone connectivity.. They all work fine for me. The problem with VM is the availability of a mwider variety of high end phones ( I learned to say "high end phones" yesterday...LOL)

I think one thing people have to understand before getting into VM (which they would figure out if they research the phones) is you are not getting the latest and greatest and additionally it is about location and it might not be the best service when compared to the big cell carriers.

The reason they are even thinking about getting into VM is because they are extremely reasonable and they are not locked into any contract.

In my experience, VM is a great company, they also have great customer service. We never experienced bad connections.
All our calls were of high quality reception. The only reason we moved on in our household is because 1. We found a great deal with our current phones, and 2. we are paying about the same monthly price we were paying at VM...

That is my two cents in this issue.
