Don't know how to root the s2 (GT-i9100P)

Hi everyone, i've just received my new Samsung galaxy s2 phone. I'm not sure what tutorial to follow and where to get the correct I9100PBVKI3 file from.

MODEL: GT-I9100P
ANDROID VERSION: 2.3.4
BASEBAND VERSION: I9100PBVKI2
KERNEL: 2.6.35.7-I9100PBVKI3-CL608158root@DELL82 #2
BUILD NO: GINGERBREAD.BVKI3

Could anyone help me ASAP pls!

Thank You

PS: This is the new NFC model.

there r some pre-rooted roms available, mostly with detailed instructions. just download a rom of your choice and install the zip file in the recovery mode and you will have a rooted phone.

thanks for your advice ykkfive. I've never owned an android phone and this is my first one, so i really am a noob. Could you please explain what you mean by the post?

I just want the best/latest rom....i've seen my friend using is it villian rom? and i like it, although i simply want the latest and most popular rom.

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks!

Tbh I don't know either. Using an insecure kernel intended for a non NFC-enabled device may well lose NFC functionality, and I haven't been able to find any version-specific info.

I'll move this up into the All Things Root sub-forum, where there's a chance that one of the regulars will know more.

@ slug - thanks. I don't want to lose any NFC functionality, so any rom that is popular and supports it, then i'll go for that.

@ ykkfive - thanks mate...i've already had a look at that. But i could not find my kernel I9100PBVKI3 on there.

no slug m8...its orange uk

Doh! I should have recognised the BV* from my own handset. :o My reason for asking is the same though; there's a good chance of the firmware update packages 'leaking' from the major carriers.

Good find! That's just what I was looking for. I officially like you again. :D

edit: in that case the CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-42-v4.2-CWM4 package from here should do the job.

Hi

I have also just got the S2 NTC with the BVKI3 kernal. I was just wondering if anyone had any luck finding this kernel (both secure and insecure) and what would happen if you used another kernel like the cf-kernel mentioned in the previous post? Would I ever be able to get back to the BVKI3 kernel if I used something else? Would I lose some functioning? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Al

thanks for the info. I'm having 2nd thoughts of doing anything for the moment. The reasons are that even the orange/samsung fw is more than adequate for me and i would lose my warranty too.

Could anyone please tell me what advantages i would have my rooting my phone? i.e. other than sim-unlock, would i get any extra features that i normally can't get with stock?

thanks guys. Just for clarification purposes, is that the right file slug? Yours say KI4, but my samsung galaxy is I9100PBVKI3

FYI, I've used this file:- CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KI3-42-v4.2-CWM4.tar

NOTE: I have managed to get CWM and backed up the FW, although now i'm getting "Permissions denied for SuperUSER" error when i now run it. Any idea, what i've done wrong guys?????

i rebooted and it works again....now need to figure out how to clear cache, dalvik cache or whatever as these options don't exist in CWM

as these options don't exist in CWM

Do you mean the cwm app? You won't find those there so either open the cwm app and press reboot to clockworkmod, or turn your phone off and then power on with volume up, menu and power button. This will put you into cwm recovery where you will be able to wipe cache and dalvik. Dalvik is in the advanced section.

I couldn't see a KI3 package for some reason (probably too tired) so I looked for the closest 2.3.4-based one. I'm glad you caught me out. :)

Use the "Reboot into ClockWorkMod recovery" option in CWM, then you'll see the "Format cache partition" option in the menu. The dalvik-cache option is in the "Advanced" menu, btw.

edit: nice ninja, Shotgun! :D

Thanks very much slug mate. I've now managed to install checkrom 2.3.6 and darkknight theme. But its not working as i still get the same style layout as my original orange/samsung rom and everything looks the same, such as dialer, notification icons etc. But when i go into ABOUT PHONE, i can see:-

Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version i9100xxki4
Kernel Ver: 2.6.35.14-Darkknight-v2.4.3-topo+gm@ubuntu #90
Build Number: CheckROM RevoHD V4

What have i done wrong?

Then in dat case, y does custom rom look da same and where is da big dialer? None of thesevfeatures r showing...is there a way 2 enable them?

(typed using s2)

Because it is based on samsung rom, then you install tweaks from the kitchen to change it, eg themes, dialers etc.
Not sure what you mean 'Big Dialer'???

Hello guys,

I have the same problem,

My baseband is I9100PBVKI2

And the kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100PBVKI3

What the file that i can donwload in the download page? The file for the KI2 or KI3?

And can i install the file directly in the phone by SD card? (i dont have a PC here)

After install the file how i can unlock the phone? Its possible to unlock this model i9100 with the app in android market?

(sorry for my bad english)

Thanks S2Android for posting this. I too would like to root my phone but want to make sure I understand what is going on before I do. Don't want to screw up my phone!

I struggle with some of the terminology. If I see the following:

Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version i9100xxki4
Kernel Ver: 2.6.35.14-Darkknight-v2.4.3-topo+gm@ubuntu #90
Build Number: CheckROM RevoHD V4

it says Kernel Ver and Build Number. I can understand what the Kernel is but what is CheckROM RevoHD. The ROM? If it is, then can I safely say it is based on Android 2.3.6? Do all ROM's have an associated Android Version and if they do, do I have to have that version on my phone before I put on a custom ROM? Can you mix Kernels and ROM's or do you have to use a matched pair?

Also, when you root your phone as S2Android did, does it wipe all your data? I see once you are rooted that you can use tools to backup you phone but how do you back an unrooted phone and even if you can, can you restore it back once you are rooted?

Sorry for the dumb questions guys but I have only flashed my firmware to KK5 and other than that, don't have any experience with ODIN.

A custom rom is just a fancy way of saying custom firmware. So yeah roms are based on official firmware, they are just tweaked to improve usability/battery/performance. You don't need to flash/instal the same firmware as the custom rom first as it works on the same principle of updating official firmware. You can use pretty much any kernel with any rom (there are a few exceptions), its just a case of finding a kernel which matches your needs.
If you root using the cfroot method you will not loose any data on your phone. You will only have to wipe data to flash some custom roms.

So your first step is to flash a cfroot kernel from here
[15.12.2011][CF-Root 5.1] KE*,KF*,KG*,KH*,KI*, KJ1/2/3, KK2/5, KP1/2 - su+bb+CWM4/5 - xda-developers

Use xwkk5 as it will match your new firmware. To be honest its exactly the same as flashing firmware with odin so you shouldn't have to much problem rooting.
