Droid 3 - First Impressions

I removed some apps and now my battery is much better. I've been texting all day, on GTalk most of the morning, and a little bit of browsing. I'm currently at 80% after being off the charger all day. My wake time isn't too bad although the %stats show otherwise. If it stays like this I'll be happy. Can't wait for my extended battery. Any minute now :)

Glad to hear!

I think there's a setting somewhere that will toggle Wifi off when the screen is off. I don't recall where that setting is or if it would have caused that.

I don't know if it's on the D3 but my D1 (UD 3.3) has when you go to settings>wireless & networks>Wi-Fi settings if you hit the menu button and go to advanced there is a Wi-Fi sleep policy and you can pick when screen turns off, Never when plugged in, or Never. I think that When screen turns off was the default.

If the WiFi is sleeping, then it uses 3g to retrieve data. I set my policy to never and use y5 battery saver only turn on WiFi where I have access points on my x.

i will say the Iphone 4 has GREAT battery life when its on standby...that thing just sipps battery when you arent using it. However, I think actual usage times are about the same. Navigation still killed the IP4 battery, and so did watching movies etc.

Android has a bit more going on in the background so it makes sense that it drains quite a bit more when still sleeping.

I just compared battery stats with my friend who has a htc g2. His phone has been off charger for 10 hrs or so, and his phone idle is 2% and his cell standby is 2%. So hopefully that means that the ridiculously high d3 idle and standby can be fixed with an update (soon?) And improve battery life

So how did your actual battery life compare? It could just be reporting it high. I'm noticing battery drain that almost mirrors my thunderbolt when they are both on wifi. Its not great...but its not horrid either.

I started the day at around 7 a.m. at 90% and at 10:20 p.m. I'm at 50%. I think the battery is pretty good. It's better than the Droid 1.

Right now both of us are at about 12 hrs off charger and im at. 30% and he's at about 60%. We literally watched my battery go down from 60% to 30% in the past 2 hrs. I have been playing with my d3 a lot the past couple hrs but still... he said usually he gets a solid 2 days + off his charge

Im guessing something is a little off, just like it was with the launch of the d2. My guess is that with a couple updates and all these battery issues will go away

That cell standby time is probably a bif culprit. Looking at my wake time, I see it is typically is awake when the screen is on. Which makes sense. There are only a few instances where it is awake when the screen isn't on. With the extended battery I went from 6 to now and am at 30%. That's about what I got out of my X. I had several calls, streamed last.fm for abt 45 mins, browsed quite a bit, texted, gtalk, etc. I even used google sky map. This is the first charge on this battery too. I'm beginning to wonder if some of the battery data is being read incorrectly.

I remember when Cyanogen Mod first came to the D1 there was the same cell standby issue. The battery life wasn't really impacted...it just reported high cell standby percentages.

Battery seems ok to me, since anything better than the Incredible is a step up for me. I am pleased so far and have stressed the D3 to see if any DX2 issues. Not ounces any yet. Posted a mini review without a rating, since I might be a jinx.

I'm pretty disappointed in the battery. From 8 a.m. to about 11 p.m., my battery was depleted from 100% to 30%. I didn't make or receive a single phone call. I probably surfed the web for 30 min., played Angry Birds for 30 min., played videos for 20 min., sent/received about 50 texts, watched the Swype video that comes w/ the phone, installed a couple apps, and messed around w/ the settings for about 15-20 min. Also, my Wi-Fi was only enabled for about 2 or 2.5 hours of the day. (I disable it when I hit the road.)

anyone else have a greenish colored keyboard backlight?

also the charging LED next to the USB port lit up once for me when i initially plugged the phone in and it hasnt came on since.

Is this the first time you have used it? For me the battery life increased dramatically over the first couple of days.

Anyone else having trouble with Photoshare for FB? My error message says: "Can't send response now. Data services are unavailable."
Or should I just wait for "pool party"?

Otherwise I am madly in love with this phone, though anything after a BB curve would probably seem magical...

Knock on particle board wood (only thing around ATM), I was expecting rough battery life, due to some posts, but the life is much better than my Incredible, so happy.

Not using live wallpapers or live widgets (other than calander)
Set to CDMA only
No other radios on
No apps updating in the background (settings in the apps)
Battery mode Nightime saver
Data Saver turned on
Display animations turned off
Display on auto with max set to 70%

Happy so far, but maybe just since I thought it would be pretty bad.

I get something along those lines too. I haven't tried it with the FB app, since I hate that thing but using the Blur FB settings it won't upload to FB or Picasa...

I'm getting impatient for root access lol This bloat has to go and I want screen shots :(

I'm confident the devs will pull it off though. :)

I took a 3.5 min video and tried uploading it to youtube. It has been going for 3 hours and counting. Is this normal for a video of this size at 720p?

Thanks ekyle. I wonder if other people are having issues with this too.

I think it stalled and just didn't tell you. Are you on Wifi or no? If not, is your data indicator constantly on? If it's not, it died.

aostang, I'm on wifi. I just cancelled it after letting it "try" to upload for 5 hours. I may record a shorter video and try again. Thanks :)

inanna, how fast is your internet connection, mainly your upload speed. HD video files can be pretty big, I just recorded a 1 minute video and it was almost 100mb, so yours could be hovering at 300-350mb. Although it definitely should've been done within a 5 hour time frame, it could be that the video size combined with a slower internet might have timed out. I use to use time warner cable, and in my area the download speeds were great but the upload was ridiculously bad, sitting at about 0.78 mbps upload. When i tried to upload bigger files to people, it would time out and just kinda stop.

Just for reference, and the math might be off, i'm not too computer/internet savvy, if your upload is rated at 1 Mpbs via speedtest, your actual upload speed will be about 100 KBps. So realistically a 350mb file will upload at about 50 minutes to an hour @1mbps rated upload.

Anyway if you want to see how fast your internet is, you can go to speedtest.net or download the speedtest app through your phone.

Google Earth seems to work fine. It did not fair so well on the gtablet, A500 or DX2. At least not for me.

Just got the phone today..Takes pics without an SD card..
Phone charges incredibly slow..its ridiculous
And I can't get my netflix to work..
Other than that.. I am happy..
It turns on fast, processes quickly, and the touch screen works very well..

iamdlux, my internet is pretty fast. I was using my wifi laptop during that time and the internet didn't cut out or have any issues.
I turned on instant upload and the video automatically uploaded to google+ in about 90 minutes. Seems like I just can't upload things from my phone unless it's on instant.
Like I said, I hope pool party will be a fix for this. Maybe the FB and YT apps have bugs. Thanks iamdlux :)
