Droid 3 OTA Reports/Issues

I don't believe the official soak has even begun yet. Looks like people are passing around the file that somebody lifted off a Moto server and calling it the OTA soak test file.

Yep. Pretty common, but not wise, in my opinion.

However, it has been suggested by those claiming to be "in the know" that these leaks are intentional, and are part of the software testing process, company devs reading the various device forums, etc.

Or the leaks are more to do with software and the internet are like leaking water from pipes. It just happens.

In this case the mod from Moto on the Moto forums was calling it stolen software. Likewise, on the 5th it was mentioned that there was no soak test yet. To me that would mean 1) this file was obtained illegally and without Motorola's consent and 2) there was no soak test and if there was no soak test, this certainly was not an OTA file (OTA - Over The Air).

I'm just trying to clear up some misstated information from what seems to be some over zealous posts about this file being *the* OTA from the soak test. From all the information I have, that is untrue and misleading. I just felt newer folks here needed to understand that so they don't get led into doing something they may not have the expertise to get out of should the file not be the final.

It sure sounds to me like the leaked/stolen "OTA" is an early nightly build, an alpha version that has not been sent out for soak testing as a Release Candidate version would be. Moderator Matt on the MotoDroid3 forum has been pretty clear that Motorola is pretty unhappy about the file that got released being applied to user's phones and has even gone so far as to say that there would be no way to get back to where a customer could return the phone to where the real OTA, when released, would ever be able to apply it. Probably just trying to scare folks, probably.

Now, about the soak test, whether it has started or not...I read a post from a ckellogg yesterday afternoon on the MotoDroid3 forum that seems to hint that soak testing is maybe currently going on. He says:

"DROID3 Update?
Even if there we're a soak test going on, we ate not supposed to Talk about it. wink wink nudge nudge"

So, I hope it IS going on and we will soon get the OTA officially released. I hope it is better than the build that has been sneaked out, I hope everyone is able to apply it and I sure hope it doesn't break rooting ! Once this OTA is behind us, its time (at least for me) to get to work really trying to open up this phone. Battery life currently is inadequate for the way I use the phone, even with the extended battery, and the keyboard "keys repeating" issue is a real hassle for using the keyboard.

Maybe the real OTA when it comes out will fix the blue-tint issue and at the same time NOT slow down the frame rates for low-light movies ! That would be cool, right Ghost ? Its pretty clear anyway that when the leaked version was the current build, there was no soak test going on at that point. That does not mean the soak test is not going on now though, maybe with an even better build of the potential OTA...

Seeing as how the System Version is IDENTICAL to the one listed on Verizon's website and how all of the fixes and additions (like multi-shot for the camera) are now on my phone, I am in no way worried about applying the update. That's just me though. I'm currently enjoying 16+ hours of battery life with my extended battery under HEAVY use and taking pictures that finally look awesome like they should.

But we've never seen an update go into a soak test and then halt distribution because of an issue turned up in the soak, have we? Just sayin. Now if this file was lifted from the actual soak test and nobody was reporting issues, then I'd be more inclined to call it a final. But to call the file floating around the OTA from the soak test is wrong. While it may turn out to be one in the same, there is a chance it could change mid-flight.

I'm going to go ahead and say that if the OTA IS different, I wouldn't exactly be surprised to see that one floating around on the internet for me to download as well. The fact that it showed up just a few days before Verizon posted the details of the upcoming OTA and it contains all of the fixes that they posted is very telling in my opinion. If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, it's normally a duck.

Well, the version that is being speculated about, the one from the leak, is being debated as to whether it's "the duck," with users giving their reasoning as to why it should be, could be, really really is, etc.

But, it's just that the official OTA, the one that emanates from the carrier's servers, is certain to the be finished product, the real duck, no debate.

Apparently there are bugs in that leaked ota, so it may be changed before the final release. For one, I've heard the help menus for Swype default to Spanish and can't be fixed to English. Not that its a big deal, just indicates that ota has bugs. Hopefully they wont patch the root exploit.

From what I read, there will be a soak test this weekend and then a full release, pending a good test, win the following week or so.

I sure hope you are right. Looking forward to the battery improvements myself. I have a good range of the other problems that I've experienced but none are as big of a deal to me as the battery.

Edit: Well, maybe the blue hue pictures too! After putting up with the camera on the D1, I was looking forward to a solid camera in the D3.

I hope what I read was true too. If only I could find that page again... I got a Camera360 Ultimate apk from a friend  and that camera shoots much better photos (in terms of hue). Plus all the other stuff it can do. I'm a fan, and had I known it was so good, I would've bought it outright.

No doubt here. The D3 takes awful pictures using the flash- unless you like the Smurf effect. For laughs, take a picture of a white surface using the flash. It is like some North Carolina fan was the camera app dev :(

hows this for a mind job..

got my -new- replacement phone. and yes it was brand new in box. Guess what? it has 890 on it already.

so much for a soak test.

Very cool, HadouGhost.

Could you show off a screeny of the "about phone" stuff with the system build, etc?

Really. So, they are shipping it on new phones already, but us who have been waiting patiently (or not so patiently) for Motorola and Verizon to complete development and testing still have to wait for it.

Based on that, all I care about it now is, "Is it still rootable ?"

Well, I also wonder if the radio hack for tethering still works.

Is there any way to tell if it really is identical to the version that was leaked ? Since the version number is exactly the same I would expect it to be.

It will probably be the exact same as the leaked OTA. So it'll still be rootable and all that jazz.

Yes sir, its still rootable. i rooted and then bought root explorer so i could go in to the camera apk settings and change it so that the lowlight minimum fps doesnt go below 20fps. (changed it from 12000, 12fps, to 2000, 20fps)

also, the camera app opens about a second or two faster.

Sweet! Glad you got your low-light video problem resolved! It seems the Droid 3 is getting set to hit it's stride. The future is bright! ....and 20fps, lol :)
