Droid 3 OTA Reports/Issues

Yes its from Verizon, not leaked version

Did your phone notify you of the update and did you sign up to be part of the soak test? I'm anxiously awaiting the update and haven't gotten anything about it on my phone, even if I try to manually check for updates.

Same here - went to check in system updates and my phone says it's up to date but it's not. So I guess I'll have to be patient.

Same here. Phone is up to date.

I haven't tried it on a wifi connection, though. I cannot help but wonder if they're limiting the release to those connected via wifi to reduce the load to the network. Although this would rather defeat the meaning of OTA... Or they're only releasing it piecemeal for the same reason.

It's been my experience through two other Android phones that these OTAs are trickled out a few at a time across the world of users. All users do not get the OTA at once, or even on the same day.

My son and I both had D1's, and it would aggravate me to no end that he'd get updates weeks before me--and I'm the one that paid the bills!:D

It will eventually get to everyone....and like others have said, going into the menu and trying to update doesn't work.

True it was the same with our HTC Droid Eris'. I got mine then my husband's came through. I updated he didn't. I wish I hadn't made my camera worse. Hopefully this will be an improved update. Our phones run great with the exception that mine half the time when I go back to the home screen my desktop picture disappears and I'm using Launcher Pro Plus. I've uninstalled it and it doesn't happen so I'm thinking it's something to do with conflicting software with Launcher Pro Plus.

You're not the only one with LP+ issues on the Droid 3 and other devices. Most have no problems, but there are a lot of reports out there.

I switched to ADW and its themes and icons a while back. No more screen or lag or other problems.

It appears to be released now. My "sometime this week" prediction has come true. :)

Maybe not yet.

Word on other forums, that looks like it is coming from Motorola's Matt, is that this actually IS a "Soak Test". They have sent this update to selected volunteer testers, but also have sent it to randomly selected Droid3 owners that have NOT volunteered to test this update. They don't mention it, but it looks like it is being sent out on new phones for the last week or so a well, perhaps because demand for new Droid3's exceeded expectations. Just guessing about that.

The Soak Test is reported to have begun noon EST Monday and will run two days, after which they expect to release nationwide unless some major problem surfaces.

This does not make any sense to me, but I have a long career in computer security software and I guess I just don't understand the methods used to test updates by Motorola. I guess Motorola and Verizon just figure that if they brick a non-volunteer customer's phone with this test (with final beta release candidate code), they can replace it and reset the bricked phone with a non-public signed SBF pretty trivially ?

According to a post by Matt, a Motorola employee who moderates the Motorola Droid3 support forum, as of 6PM tonight there is an OTA being released for the Droid3.

He links to a PDF with specifics, but the link is broken.

He says the update will be sent to phone owners in waves, but it has not gotten here yet.

He also says that the update is also available for push, via Settings->About Phone->System Updates, but when I do that here in central NC it says, "Your device is up to date!" - though it isn't.

So, I guess it passed the Soak Test. Good thing, eh ?

Still waiting.

I didnt get the update yet either. Came here to the boards to get an update.

Btw yesterday I turned my phone on at 730am and took it off the charger. At midnight I still had 40% and my random reboots stopped. And thats with no update! My pics are still blue so I know I don't have the update

OTA became available via push here in RTP, NC at midnight.

Took about 10 minutes to get. Susan's came in via 3G while mine came in on WiFi-N...so both work though the download via N was faster.

Now my Swype Help is in Spanish.

Installing right now...

I actually checked while connected to 3G and got the 'check for system update is not available at this time' message. Then, I turned on WiFi, checked again and it popped right up.

YMMV.

Got and installed the download just after midnight in so cal. Ill let you know how it runs as I test it out. So far the homescreen redraw seems to be very quick.

The OTA arrived to my Droid 3 this morning as soon as I turned it on for the day.

It took about two minutes to download, then another few to install.

I have not had time yet to test it out much, but I did go to an icon archive I have that always flickered in an annoying manner as I scrolled vertically through it. Not now. :)

Getting my update RIGHT NOW! Nj!

WOOHOO!

UPDATE: the update for the phone is done. took 10% battery and 10 mins. The very first thing i did was take pics. THEY ARE NOT BLUE!!!!!!!! WOOTWOOT

Got it. It seems the tiniest bit snappier (while using go launcher). The onscreen keyboard has only lagged on me once in typing this and the issue with the typing cursor being offset from its actual position has not appeared. Hopefully that's been fixed. But what I'm really looking forward to is that sweet extra juice. My battery life has been underwhelming so far and I'm hoping I'm going to get a full day of moderate use on a single charge after this update.

Nope. The typing cursor is still a little wonky.

The first thing I noticed after the update was that Swype defaulted to Spanish as the language:D. Changed it back to English, but I found it amusing.

I don't see much difference in the camera, particularly with the flash, though.

I did the official OTA from my phone this morning. I'm quoting my previous message to compare the new version.

I'm also eagerly and anxiously awaiting the official OTA firmware update. My current versions are as shown below. I ordered my phone on 7/7/11, which is when the phone was first available online.

System version: 5.5.959.XT852.Verizon.en.US
Build number: 5.5.1_84_D3G-20_TA-9
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-g42f0276

System version: 5.6.890.XT862.Verizon.en.US
Build number: 5.5.1_84_D3G-55
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-g790a33c

While I didn't check everyday for an update, maybe every other day, I noticed late last night that an update was available. However, my battery was down to 10%, so I decided to wait until this morning after it got a full recharge. I did so over my home's WiFi, which took a couple min. to get the 57.2 MB file. Then it took another 12 min. to install it. I noticed a typo in one of the messages it displayed by saying "upto" instead of "up to". Makes you wonder if an editor read it. :D

Anyway, while I haven't used my phone much today, I did take the same picture just before the OTA update and right after (from my bedroom looking out the window this morning), which I hope to upload from my phone tonight. That should show conclusively if the blue was removed. So far, battery is still at 90% after 2 hours, so that's encouraging, although as I mentioned, I haven't used my phone much yet.

When I saw the update was available, I was at 10% too. So, I told it to wait a bit, plugged the phone in to a wall charger, and then said, "Go ahead now."

It worked, but I think there was some time even while it was plugged in but updating that the charging was not happening, because when it came back after the update it seemed just a bit lower in charge. It DID retain the battery usage plot across the update, oddly, and once it restarted it began charging back up faster than I have ever seen it do before (slope steeply up). Since then, it has been sitting at 90% for hours even after a 30 minute phone call while wifi was running too. I think its better, maybe even a LOT better.
