i was thinking of not getting a 4g phone and get the dx 2 or droid 3. but if im locking in for two more years i might as well get 4g and wait for the function or bionic. also seeing as i have 4g coverage where i am. the july 21st release for the galaxy 2 was bogus and was actually the release date for canada.

Because the Bionic still uses the first generation of LTE chips which already drains too much power, so not like comparing to the D3 or even the DX2.

Second generation LTE is supposed to be on chip (stressing "supposed"), so given the dev lead-time, it is obvious the Bionic does not have a second generation LTE chipset since using the 4430 or 4460 (they do not have LTE on chip).

Point is with LTE, battery life is short enough, so any percent less is too much. Unless you leave it off. Still your point is correct, since it will not cut the power in half.

Added:

BTW, the size difference is not proportional, since more than one dimension. For a 16X9 shape, the diagonal needs to be multiplied by .49 for width and .87 for length. The surface coverage is the relative point for battery consumption, so 4.5" vs 4.3" diagonal is actually about 9.4% more battery need in regards to surface space of display (same pixel total, but more light needed).

and you know it uses first gen chips how? How do you know that motos new chips they are making for their lte phones aren't better on battery than the other manufacturers chips? I am not saying they will be I would hope with all this time they got something down to work better since they are using their own chips but it is moto so only time will tell. Just saying you cant really say how it will perform until someone gets their hands on it and then can say how it performs.

After going back and forth between the two, I think I've finally decided on the S2.

I've come to realize that I won't really care about 4G until it's as established as 3G. Plus, I don't want to deal with the issues that come along with 4G, namely battery drain. Having owned a D1 since December of 2009, I know that battery life and RAM are two of the most important things to me when it comes to a smartphone. Speaking of RAM, I've heard that some of the Bionic's 1GB will be dedicated to webtop and not all of it will be fully utilized by the phone. Not sure how accurate that claim is but I don't know if I'm willing to risk being stuck (again) with a phone that is underpowered (with regards to RAM) for another to years.

With the S2, I don't have to worry about that. It's been out for a while and has been tested and proven that it is fast, reliable and has good battery life. Not to mention, I prefer TouchWiz over Blur by a long shot. I think Sense is the best and really amplifies the Android experience but TouchWiz seems to be pretty good too. Blur is just blah. Now if the Bionic comes out, performs just as well as the S2 and has great battery life (despite the LTE), I may change my mind but for now it's going to be the S2 for me (unless something else comes along before I upgrade).

it will have the full 1gb ram and only will use webtop ram when you hook it up in a dock. So its not like when not using webtop you wont get the full 1gb because you will. Not to mention verizon will probably water down the function like they did with the fascinate. I mean look at the original galaxy s and then look at the fascinate. It was about half the phone the international version was. It wouldnt surprise me if verizon does that again with the function.

Agreed. Looks like some time between 8/4 and 9/1 the answers will be given.

The D3 has restored my faith in Moto as far as firmware. Since the same chipset, seems a given the Bionic will be more of the same goodness and have more ram to play.

Last time I checked OMAP4 processor doesn't have on chip LTE radio. So he's probably right on this one. The first on-chip LTE will be Qualcomm's upcoming Krait (4th gen snapdragon) AP. HTC, LG are probably working on their dual core/LTE phones using this AP to be released by the end of this year.

My biggest concern on Bionic is battery life with large screen, LTE. If it doesn't do better than Tbolt, Revolution, it will be hard sell for me.

I don't see HTC releasing a dual core phone on Verizon by December. Maybe April 2012. And that's release, not announcement or forum speculation. Watch it release with 2.3.3 instead of 2.3.4 or even ICS.

I personally think Krait or Kal-El will power the next Nexus phone, likely Krait, which is what I'm waiting for.

And I'd like to see qHD on a non pentile panel, ideally SLCD not SAMOLED+, which drains battery by comparison.

All we have to go on is rumors. If everyone just sits and waits on the next best thing we will always be waiting. I say just get what comes out first, if you like it then when another comes out that you think you can't live without save and buy it. That's what I'm gonna do.

Me too. If the bionic doesnt impress than I will sell it and get something else later on but hopefully it lives up to the hype.

I hope it does too. I'm tired of waiting on something that may or may not come. I would like to know what the specs are actually gonna be though.

I am surprised that we are this far along (hopefully anyway) and don't have some really concrete leaked information on specs. All I want to know is if I should grab the D3 now or if the Bionic will *really* be that much better. Far too tired of waiting.

If a KB is something you would like and / or LTE is not in your area for awhile, the D3 rocks. If not, the Bionic should be out in the next six weeks.

The good news is the D3 makes for a great plan B :)

Well, I'm not so sure about not seeing it by the end of this year given this news. If it's sampling now to manufacturers, getting device out by early winter is not out of question I think. Seems like next gen LTE phones will have better battery life.

Both 4G phones coming July-August (estimated)

Which is better and why?

My opinion? I'm not sure. I don't have enough on the bionic to know. So far the SGSII has an unlocked bootloader and 1.2 GHZ dual-core with awesome battery life. Very thin. Super AMOLED +.
Bionic? Fat, blurred, locked, bad qHD. I'm going with SGSII right now, but I don't know yet. Bionic needs to prove its a winner.

How can you say "very thin" when it has that stupid fat keyboard dangling from it? I hate those stupid qwerty boards.

What, no one wants to get the screen oily?

If it had no fat ugly keyboard, I'd go SGSII all the way.

But that totally kills it.

im torn between both devices. but if the bionic is gonna have a 4.5 inch screen i think thats a little too big.

Bigger is better! People used to say that 42 inches was way too big for a TV. "It'll make you blind!" they screamed.

And, don't forget, even the thought of IMAX was an unimaginable terror before it graced our movie theaters. Now everyone loves it.

Yes, I want my phone to be so tight in my jeans pocket that I'm afraid to sit down!

Where did you see SGSII has stupid fat keyboard? Just curious because I have not seen such pictures, info yet.

I do believe it has been established that that slide phone is NOT the SGS2 elsewhere on this site.

Ha. Beat me to it.

It's already old news on Function forum and got shot down as not being Function.;) Model number is not GS2 variant, single core processor, etc. It's pretty much Epic 4G with Wimax swapped with LTE.

Wow! That is awesome news. I retract my objection, then.

This makes it so much harder, though. Do I wait til probably September for the GS2, and watch that get delayed until "winter", when the supposed "Dinara" comes out?

Geez.

I didn't see that it had a keyboard?! Where is that pic? Never mind!

why cant they just give us a release date for these phones!?! its driving me crazy. and from what ive been reading the D3 doesnt seem too great. id go with the DX2 if i had to pick between the two.
