Droid Bionic RAM + 4G coverage

Have you rooted an Android yet?

Generally yes. Programs can be made memory persistent though. These programs are always running and occupy ram until terminated. It's not common on non-rooted phones but this is the mythical power of Android that Iphone doesn't have. I can tell you without a doubt that 256mb of ram is FAR too little for how I use my phone. 512mb is probably enough for now, but lets assume some one figures out how to get webtop to run on the bionic without the dock...or what if Android become a gaming platform. 512mb isn't going to be enough. And face it that's where it's at, right? Your computer doesn't need a quad core or sli video cards, SS HD's, or 4 gig of ram...until you start messing with games and photoshop. I'm not sure any mobile processor at this point is taking advantage of the speed of ram in current phones.

In the end the argument here is dumb....but I'm a irritated that my humor is being used to belittle me.

Yea programs can be persistent, but google already implemented a termination function to keep the apps from running too long or taking up too much RAM. This can even be enhanced to kill processess the second you stop using them, just check out the spare parts app that lets you control this. Just as well, the OS itself only uses around 15-20MB to run. 512MB will be plenty to handle games for a while even with the games coming out that run off of the Unreal Engine. Current single core 512 MB ram phones can handle this fine already. By the time the games advance, youll be ready to upgrade to a better phone.

Someone can go ahead and try to list all the great features it may have, won't change the fact that I and a lot of others think the X sucks.

We can't have facts getting in the way now can we? Gotta love the religious mentality.

My only gripe is: Why the difference in between the Bionic and the Atrix? Why couldn't they have the same specs? I really love the Atrix' specs and I would plop down the cash for the phone, desktop dock and the laptop accessory. Just seems like we VZWians got hosed...

I realize this is a slightly older post, but we had the same conversation on the Atrix board. It seems odd to produce two phones, with slightly different form factors, cameras, display sizes, etc. I would think Moto would want to capitalize on economy of scale and make a single model with maybe a slight aesthetic variation for AT&T vs. Vz branding.

My theory was matching the existing top model phones available from the provider, so where Vz has 4.3"/8MP in the Droid X, AT&T has 4"/5MP in the Captivate. There also seems to be a little market differentiation, Bionic for more consumer oriented, Atrix for business (with the NOTbook dock and fingerprint reader for security).

Regardless of my crackpot assessment, it does seem strange.

I'll probably get the Bionic. U all r going to laugh, but I brought back (exchanged) my incredible for Droid. I tested Droid earlier to see if I wanted to move from att to VZ. The short of it, Incredible batt. died early, hard to see screen in sun, and the biggest reason was reception! Droid better in all areas. But I did like the snappyness of the Incredable. Wish I had DroidX. I am fearful of reception. VZ works best in my area. LTE will be sweet. Have friend installing LTE in FL. Mostly covered (Lucent). NE is behind. Low rf will give great coverage and penetration. Thinkng about rooting. Will it help speed up my Droid till I can get Bionic.

My rooted Droid is about on par with my g/f's rooted DInc. I highly recommend looking into it. I've loved my Droid since the day it dropped and it's taken a phone like the Bionic to make me want to upgrade. Not bad, considering how old the technology is now.

This, of course, is the reason people are talking about the locked bootloader issue.

IMHO, if you really are fearful of reception I would stick with Motorola for right now. I got a Droid 1. I got a Droid X to see if I was gonna keep it. One of the main reasons I kept the X was because it had better reception than my Droid 1. The Droid 1 has good reception also, the X is just a lil better.

I hope LTE evens the playing field with reception so I can try to like other phones. But like you, reception is one of my main priorities.

Yeah, I feel my X doesn't load pages on the internet quick enough, it also lags slightly too much in games, and the launcher crashes / freezes every so often.

Yes, but hasn't it been agreed upon that the RAM is going to be DDR2 and thus significantly faster than the RAM in the Droid X etc regardless of them all being at 512MB?

Also, I wanted to say after reading everything else in here, doesn't it come out to the fact that all these games that will require more than 512 take well over a year plus to even develop? Not to mention I imagine they will be designed to disable other programs and free up RAM prior to starting the game...

All in all I will be going to the Bionic, because I have the OG Droid as is (which is awesome rooted BTW), and I want a dual core phone.

Not to mention Motorola has been nothing but awesome to me since I moved to their phones.

An important thing to consider for those agonizing over the RAM: No phone benchmark out there shows a statistically significant difference for the same SoC on 512MB vs. 1GB of RAM (read, LG revolution vs. Atrix 4G). The 1GB is solely for the webtop/docking that allows the Atrix to do a simulated desktop environment and seamlessly transition back to the phone.

Also, after having found out that the Atrix 4G has a PenTile screen, I'm crossing my fingers that this doesn't based on the fact that the screen sizes are different (and the atrix is advertised as an 8-bit screen whereas the bionic is advertised as 6-bit).

Alright we all get it! I read it a million times here:

The Droid Bionic does NOT need 1GB RAM!

In fact, since it has DDR2 RAM, 512 GB DDR2 > 1GB of Atrix's RAM.

eal, I think you meant to say you're fearful of POOR reception. If you're fearful of reception you need an iPhone4 from AT&T :D

That's incorrect. More ram has always been better than faster ram in the entire history of the computing industry. RAM speed improvements are very minute, very incremental. The only time the speed of RAM would be a significant factor is if you are comparing technologies many, many years apart.

With Motorola's announcement today that the Bionic will have the web dock feature like the Atrix, does this mean it will be bumped up to the full 1gig of ram?

The bigger question for me is if it requires a $300 dock. If that is the case it will matter diddly to me since I won't ever use it.

My Droid 1 has done a good job keeping up with OS upgrades over the 20 month life, until eligible for the next discounted upgrade. What I'm looking for in my next phone are high enough specs to again allow me to keep getting the OS upgrades for the next 20 months, until eligible again. Will the Bionic specs do that?? I hope so, since it appears to be the leading contender at the moment. My next upgrade is in July, so, hope the Bionic is out and bug free by then.

Bionic definitely will..I mean it's a dual core processor with a ton of RAM. NO fears!

Motorola has stated their webtop software or whatever is on the Atrix will be on all new phones going forward so it's def going to be supported for its full life

so moto has stated the bionic will get webtop. btw dx has ddr2 and tb has flash memory lols. anyone know if atrix was proven to have ddr2 or not

gTablet is very fast, has 512mb, Tegra 2 and has to refresh a higher res display. The chipset and not the ram (if 512mb) is the actual bottleneck. The device should be much faster than the Thunderbolt IF Moto does not Blur it to death.

I don't care about the webtop application myself, but even if Moto does blur the device, we can easily replace the launcher with a different one.

Yeah but it is worth waiting for 4G in my area before I shell out $ for it. I don't think 512 is enough, 2ghz can't take advantage of 512, but 1gb, that's a smart phone. I'm waiting until the next phone that has:
1GB RAM
4G in my area LTE
2GHZ (total 1GHz x 1GHz)

Right now I'm missing the 4G and 1GB RAM part.

God you guys are really starting to bug about this, PLEASE LINK ME THE APPLICATIONS THAT USE UP YOUR 512 mb OF RAM AT A TIME. Android runs on linux, linux is not lie windows, adding ram WILL NOT do much of anythign for your "speed". Android apps are built to run at very low amounts of memory and so there is nothing on the market that would even make more then 512 useful. The reasoning behind the 1gig on the attrix is the dock station and that alone.

Anyways about 4g, its in more areas then you'd think I'm not even in that big a of a city and I have great 4g coverage where im at right now for break and back where I go to college. ;)
